From the FAQ
If I've already played a spell on a check, can I play Arcane Armor to reduce damage?
Generally, you can't play a second spell on a check unless it says so. However, damage-reduction spells (and only spells, for the most part) should usually say so.
Resolution: On the spell Arcane Armor, add the following at the end of the first power: "You may play this card even if you have played another spell on this check."
Does this apply to Mirror Image.
Lets say i take damage before combat and play Mirror Image. Does this count as playing my spell during my turn, and therefore i could not play an attack spell, or is it a damage reduction spell similar to Arcane Armor?
If this does apply to the Mirror Image spell it needs to be listed in the FAQ, since it is a change to the card. It would also be good to know of any other spells that are going to fall into this category.

As I just posted on your other thread, it was my understanding that the "Take damage" phase was a separate entity and you could play one of each card type and each power on it as if it was a separate check.
Seems like the FAQ has changed this, or why change the wording on Arcane armor.
still not sure what it means for Mirror Image.

What about damage reduction items, like the Amulet of Life? Does that mean they need to be updated, too, so that you can use them even after using an item on the combat check?
Hmmm... just checked the other thread, and h4ppy's last question kinda covers this. These two threads could probably be combined.

I would tend to think that "the check" ends when the dice are rolled and assessed. As such, it seems to me that playing a card to reduce damage would not be part of the check, meaning you could play arcane armor or mirror image regardless of whether you used a spell in combat. But then, if that's correct, what's to stop someone from playing both?
I guess it comes down to whether or not taking damage constitutes a check in some way.

I have been playing it that way and it seems so has H4ppy.
Wouldn't it be simpler to treat healing or damage reduction as post the combat / encounter check. I realise armour being a separate type is not an issue , making exception for damage reducing spells, items , allies may be far more effort than just ending the check as suggested.

Yes, the way you guys are describing it, is the way i was playing it, and that's the way it was clarified some time ago, but the statment in the FAQ seems to change this interpertation, and the check may not finish until the encounter resloves.
Not sure yet, but some of these latest developments are going to require some cards to be changed, especially the spells that reduce damage. I think the rules were easier to interpert when after the dice are rolled the check is over.

@Tracker1 - I'm not sure why you opened two very similar threads at the same time... can we use one of them going forward? Let me know which one you prefer.
I've just posted in the other thread since that has more (2 to 1) posts from Mike!

We're also likely to update Mirror Image in some way; we're just still figuring out what will fit on the card.
Based on some recent rulings it seems like Mirror Image might not need to be updated.
Since, if you take damage before the encounter you can play this spell, and it will not interfere with playing a spell for your check, and you could still benefit from MI if you lose the check since it's power is in affect for the rest of your turn. The only reason to change it would be if you wanted to let players play it during a check to reduce damage if they have already played a spell.

As Ezren there is very few times where I am not casting a spell in a combat check, so Mirror Image would only be usable against the random few monsters with pre-check damage. This is unacceptable, so Mirror Image likely also needs the exemption. Especially considering Mirror Image is only castable when the first source of monster damage is dealt.

Just closing this thread up with an official answer to these 2 spells in case someone searches in the future.

Resolution: On the spell Arcane Armor, add the following at the end of the first power: "You may play this card even if you have played another spell on this check."
On the spell Mirror Image, change the first power to the following:
"If a monster deals damage to you, you may display this card, even if you have played another spell on this check. Roll 1d4; on a result other than 1, reduce the damage to 0. Do this each time a monster deals damage to you. Discard this card at the end of the turn."
