Skill points for weapon proficiency and attack bonus

Homebrew and House Rules

So it's always bugged me how a 1st level fighter could be proficient in like 30+ weapons outside exotics, and always use his full attack bonus with them. I was trying to figure out a way to make it a bit more realistic (GASP I said the R word), and this is the best I've come up with for a homebrew system. I'd like your opinions please.

Basically, instead of automatic base attack bonuses ganted every level, a PC instead invests skill points into Skill: Longsword, or Skill: Longbow.

For martial characters you get your full skill ranking in the weapon as you base attack bonus for said weapon. Your skill level is your proficiency.

non martial characters like wizards would get +1 base attack bonus per 2 skill points invested in a weapon. Basically the same proportion as their normal progression.

Non martial characters would get 2 or 3 skill points free at first level to assign depending on progression, and martials would get 4.

Martials like fighters would also get 4+int bonus instead of 2+ int skill point every level to allow for the 'training' of weapons. classes with lower progression would get 3+int each level.

I just want to get away from the idea that a fighter or someone can pick up one of a couple dozen weapons, and fight as if they had used it as their primary weapon all their life. It doesn't make sense.

Does anyone have any suggestions or amendments they think might help this work better?

1. Assuming this worked like any other class skill, a 1st level fighter would get an additional +3 to hit with one weapon (much easier to hit) and then be incapable of using any other weapon.

2. If a character doesn't max ranks in a weapon, he will quickly fall so far behind that it is very difficult to participate in combat. Martial classes, in order to maintain their full bonus, would have to spread themselves very thin to be versatile in combat (have a ranged, melee, and alt damage type weapon) AND have passable bonuses in other skills.

3. All the 3/4 classes will now be as incapable in weapon combat as the wizard.

4. Speaking of the wizard, no wizard in his right mind would ever spend 1 skill point every level to get a minute bonus to something he will never be able to do anyway.

5. So touch attacks count as weapons for this? In that case every spell caster will need to put points into THAT on top of weapons.

Better Solution: Just limit the number of weapons martial characters can be proficient with in a way that doesn't effect EVERY other class. For instance, dividing proficiency up by weapo ngroup (light blades, light axes, bows, etc.) and having them choose 3 of those, 3/4's get 2, 1/2's get a single type.

I'd much rather see limitation of proficiency be a roleplay thing than a mechanical thing, because the ways we have of acquiring proficiencies aren't "worth it" mechanically in most cases. Maybe spend one skill point to become proficient with a single weapon of your choice?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

"Realistic" is the curse of martial characters.

No matter how your system turns out, it will reward specialization and punish diversification. And martial characters are already saddled with a lack of options in play.
