Arcane Shield

School abjuration; Level sorcerer/wizard ??

Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S
Range: Personal
Target Self
Duration 1 hr/level or until discharged
Saving Throw: NA
Spell Resistance yes (harmless)

Similar to Stoneskin, Arcane Shield provides DR 10/adamantine and SR 30 for all attacks, both physical and spell, from one target for one round.

(Basically protects against all attacks and spells from an attacking source for one round from THAT attacker. The spell provides no protection against attacks/spells from another source during the round, just the initial source).

What do you think? What level would you put it at?

At least 5th level, I'm not sold on the spell, but it would be at least 5th level. At 6th level, I would allow the AC trigger to be an immediate action.

Shadow Lodge

Hmm given that it only lasts a single round that would be a crappy 5th lvl spell
Maybe once triggered it turns into 1 round per level

Well, you've got the spell Stoneskin and the spell Spell Resistance rolled into one and both of those last for far longer and this spell is better than Spell Resistance offering SR30 right off the bat. It's also better than Stoneskin theoretically because there's no pool and to me that's a problem.

Here's what I'd do if I were the GM if I wanted to fix this particular spell. First I'd make it 1rd/level, and have it act like both Stoneskin and Spell Resistance that works with one casting and it would be 7th level for a Wiz/Sorc (for one because you're casting a spell that's not on the Wiz/Sorc list, and for another because you're basically casting 2 spells with one spell).

It sounds like what you want to do is more like a selective Resilient Sphere though. So here's what I would let you do:

School evocation [force]; Level sorcerer/wizard 5
Casting Time 1 immediate action
Components V, S, F (a crystal sphere)
Range Personal
Effect 1-ft.-diameter/level sphere, centered around you
Duration 1 Round (D)
Saving Throw Reflex negates; Spell Resistance yes (Harmless)

A globe of shimmering force encloses you, provided you are small enough to fit within the diameter of the sphere. The sphere contains you until the end of your next turn. The sphere functions as a wall of force, except that it can be negated by dispel magic. A subject inside the sphere can breathe normally. The sphere cannot be physically moved either by people outside it or by the struggles of those within.

That spell is an objectively worse version of Emergency Force Sphere, riatin.

The increased diameter doesn't matter all that much given that you just want it to protect you and your party. A 5-foot radius gives plenty of space for that.

It has a higher level, allows a saving throw, AND allows SR. Also, it requires a focus and a somatic component. Emergency Force Sphere requires neither.

(comparing things to the force sphere is not valid, whatever book that spell came from should be unmade with baelfire.)

Taason - I'd say it is comparable to "moment of prescience", which is 8th level and is very similar in that you can cast it well ahead of time and it will basically get you out of one bad situation. It's a little better in that it lasts a round instead of just one roll. It's a little better in that it applies to some things that moment of prescience would not. It's somewhat worse in that DR 10 and SR 30 are both likely to not actually negate the attack. So: maybe 7th or 8th level.

Edit: when you invent your own spell, it's important that you give it some kind of ridiculous name. I think this is the most important flaw in this spell. Maybe something like: "Taason's Prescient Mitigation" or "Taason's Timely Salvation" or "Taason's Proximate Prophylactic" ... none of those quite have the Dying Earth ring that I'm looking for, but, you get the idea.
edit: Promethean Preparation? Expedient Deliverance?
edit: I think I like: "Taason's Premeditated Prophylactic"

I've never seen that spell before, but the version I posted is a wall of force as per resilient sphere which is a hardness 30 and 20 hp/level, so its quite a bit more resilient than that version.

My version is effectively just a personalized, one round, resilient sphere which is why its one level higher than resilient sphere.
