Since Kyra's healing ability states it should be used "Instead of your first exploration on a turn," do you have to be able to explore in order to use it?
In other words, if Kyra is at a closed location with no cards to explore, can she use her explore phase to still heal even though there are no cards to explore?

I have question about this ability too. Can Kyra use her ability on herself? It says that she chooses character on her location, so can she choose herself? I can see reasons for both rulings but official/semi-official answer would be nice. It is very powerful ability if she can use it to herself.
Yes. This applies to all similarly worded effects.

There are some scenarios where you might want to stay in a place where you can't explore. Perhaps you are close to death and scenario is almost over and you don't want to risk getting group damage. Perhaps another player can heal you on their turn and they are already there. Perhaps another player already with you wants to give you a card at the start of their turn.

Though I find Kyra's healing ability very very useful. I have found that it can be a bane too. You can use up turns that could end up very needed toward the end of the scenario. So, it is best, if your cards allow, to also be able to discard another card after the heal, to get at least one exploration done on the turn.

Yes, but that's what is great about this game. You have to use strategy, and balance between taking risks (in this exemple not healing) and running out of time (i.e. healing too much).
