Advice

One of the players on my table wants to become a Lich, and it's gonna happen. I was considering options to grant to the other players in order to balance the party, and besides allowing/creating other templates, I thought that maybe allowing a PC to take on one or two archtypes ON TOP of the class, instead of replacing class features, could also work.

It would obviously depend on which archtypes, but... do you think this could work? Would it be under/over powered compared to Lichdom?

I suck at modifying the system, so I'll value your opinions.

Regards.

Use the Hero Point system and make it a lot harder for the Lich to earn more points compared to the other characters.

I allowed my table to effectively rewrite their characters once they hit 12 so everyone could pickup a template if they chose to, but it did count against their ECL as normal.

This was a 3.5 game, super high fantasy. Some players felt underpowered compared to others at the table so I gave them an encounter where they fought themselves but as I would control them. After they won, they got to rewrite and basically go crazy with whatever splat or monster with an ECL they could find. They loved it.

The accused OP character didn't change much because he was already happy and the other PCs came up with some interesting builds. Fun for all.
