TELLEKKAN: COLONIZATION

Hello, welcome, to the recruitment for Colonization, a Pathfinder adventure set in the my homebrew campaign setting called Tellekkan.

For full information on Tellekkan, please follow the links on the campaign info tab above.

Colonization focuses on a ship full of colonists gathered aboard the New Dawn by the Holy Solar Empire and their bankrollers for this mission, a nagaji nest called the White Asps, who venture out away from the Empire in the hopes of settling a colony in the distant continent of Tel. The colony is to serve as a resource gathering base and new frontier for the crippled Empire. With the Scar barely being held at bay, starting what some are already calling The Third Great War, it is essential that new lands and resources open to the Empire.

You are among the crew of experts aboard the New Dawn, a massive galleon owned by the White Asp Nest that has been sold to the Empire for the journey. Beginning with a crew of 200 soldiers, farmers, and crafstmen, you will journey to Tel to explore an unsettled wilderness and establish a new colony in a foreign land of intrigue, mystery, and unspeakable danger.

FOR SOL, FOR HONOR, AND GLORY!

Please pay close attention to the character creation guidelines below.

CHARACTER CREATION

Your character in Colonization will belong to the White Asp Company, a troupe of 200 men and women from all over the Empire. All of them are there because they represent professionals in their fields willing to risk a dangerous journey to start a new life. You will need to not only be capable of defending yourself and others from the dangers of this unknown land, but also bring worthwhile skills for settlement and community building to the table.

This campaign will begin during the last leg of the long sea voyage to Tal aboard the New Dawn.

Characters should be made using the following options:

Starting Level: PCs will start at 4th level. Your first two levels must be in NPC classes.
Alignment: Any. See alignment for details.
Ability Scores: Roll 4d6 and drop the lowest, reroll any score below 7. Or take a 17 point buy. You may roll then decide.
HP: Max HP rolls at 1st and 2nd level. Players will take half their hit dice+1 from level 3 onward. (d8 is 5). Companions granted from class abilities figure HP this way from their first hit dice.
Traits: You should propose and detail two custom traits to fit your character's background. They should be in line mechanically with Paizo's published traits.
Drawbacks: You may take one drawback in exchange for a third trait.
Story Feats: One free Story Feat at 1st level, ignore the prerequisites.
Starting Money: 2,400 gp
Races: Only the core races described in the Tellekkan document. Questions about other races will be ignored.
Classes: All classes and archetypes from Paizo products. Some that are Golarion specific may need to be reflavored.
Firearms: Firearms operate under the "commonplace guns" rule. See firearms rules for details.

When you create a submission, please create a messagboard alias and include your character information in the form of a standard stat block profile. Here's Ruarc's profile as an example. I don't want your stats broken up into spoilers where I can't find them easily and quickly. If you can't mange this simple task, you will not be considered.

Also, include the following information in your profile:

1) Appearance
2) Personality (if you have trouble with this, TV Tropes is an excellent source for inspirational archetypal character elements)
3) Background

Once you have created a character (and only one) for consideration, please fill out the following application in character, and then post an in character scene, written in third person narrative, from a key moment in your character's background. This is to show off your writing skills. I am looking for good writers above all else.

Application for position aboard the expedition of the New Dawn:

Name:
Age:
Gender:
Race:
Occupation:

What do you bring to the expedition?

What are your professional goals?

Do prefer to work alone or in a team?

Give some examples of teamwork.

How do you handle pressure?

How do you measure success?

What are you passionate about?

What have you learend from your mistakes?

What is your greatest strength?

What is your greatest weakness?

What major challenges have you handled?

Why do you want to be on the expedition?

Do you have a criminal record? If so, why should it be ignored?

CAMPAIGN THEME
Colonization is an exploration/kingdom building campaign that will also feature mass combat. I will be using the exploration, kingdom building and mass combat rules released by Paizo in Ultimate Campaign.

I will also be using the Story Feats from Ultimate Campaign. I will try to make sure that each character's story feat has a chance to eventually come to fruition.

POSTING CONSIDERATIONS

Once the campaign begins you will be expected to post at least once every 48 hours. If you are going on a vacation, very busy, or otherwise unable to post just let me know and I will DMPC you for that time. If I don't hear from you your character will have a mental breakdown and won't do or say anything. They will be dazed should combat occur during that time.

If anyone disappears for 10 straight days without posting or leaving notice you will be killed off without hope of resurrection. This is extremely generous in terms of time span, so please don't let it get to that level of uninvolvement.

My posting rates may occasionally slow down, but I will communicate when that's going to happen before hand.

SELECTION

I will be selecting 6 characters from those submitted. Ideally they should fill the following leadership roles: Viceroy, Warden, General (Which we'll call Commander), Treasurer, High Priest and Grand Diplomat. But my selections will be the characters I like best regardless of who they are. If not all of the leadership roles end up filled, NPCs will be made to fill them. I am looking for three dimensional characters who I can believe are real people in the world they inhabit. Recruitment ends on the 7th of September 2013 at 12:00PM GMT+8. Late submissions will not be considered.

If you have any questions please ask, I will be monitoring the thread closely.

I was denied access to your "races" document.

I am interested, but I would like to look at the races to see if something comes together in my mind.

Yeah, try again now. I realized a second after I posted that I had forgotten to enable access. It should be fixed now.

Dotting. Will look at the lore in detail tomorrow and decide then what I'll make. :D

Grand Lodge

consider me interested also

i will probably make an elven magus..

Grand Lodge

tw i do not own a copy of UC for story feat. i'll try to see if i can find them on the pathfinder OGC if not i will ask for your help

There's a link above for the story feats.

Grand Lodge

mutch thanks. Other question what do you consider the role of warden to be?

Also a link for that, but...

Warden wrote:

The Warden is responsible for enforcing laws in larger settlements, as well as ensuring the safety of the kingdom leaders. The Warden also works with the General to deploy forces to protect settlements and react to internal threats.

Benefit(s): Add your Constitution modifier or Strength modifier to Loyalty.

Vacancy Penalty: Loyalty and Stability decrease by 2.

After the first settlement gets built, they'll basically be the sheriff.

Grand Lodge

I am posting from phone (so hard time following links) very sorry :)

Seems interesting Jelani.

I'm leaning one of two ways pretty much.

Either a venom-spitting gruff mercenary Nagaji mad dog barbarian with a dinosaur companion, probably ideally headed towards mammoth rider, eventually riding a big ol dinosaur, I imagine he'd make an interesting general.

My other idea was some sort of halfling, I really liked your take on them and I think it'd be interesting to play out a sort of " courage is not the lack of fear, but the will to overcome it" angle.

I think the community gaurdian archetype would work, not decided on a mystery yet. The religion section mentioned halflings revere the Empyreal Lord Arshea, mind giving me some more info on that?

Thanks!

EDIT: One in the same?

Grand Lodge

oh other question regarding trait if we use actual (for example Dangerously curious trait) some trait that grand class skill or other abilities are you ok with just a re fluff of the trait?

Grand Lodge

since i am going with mostly question i know from reading your document that summoning (calling spell) do not work. What about an eidolon ?

(i had an idea for a fletchling (they do look pale human after all) shadow caller that would go with a dark rider feel, just checking the mechanic of course since for now my primary idea is still a elven magus))

Alrighty! Got done reading the Campaign info!

Got to say, I really like the two gods stuff with what is basically a black hole and the regular star. :D

As for what kind of character I'm going to make.. I'm leaning towards Nagaji Draconic Sorcerer/Dragon Disciple (Long term goal), with me starting out as a Male N Nagaji Warrior2/Sorcerer2. I like how the males are percieved as mercenaries for hire, so I'll be going that route, with the guy also inheriting some raw firepower potential from his sorcery bloodline.

In essence, he'll be the Heavy Weapons Guy of a mercenary group, hired to help guard the expedition.

Now I've a question that I didn't see the answer for: Draconic Bloodlines. Which colors are available, or are there no changes to that?

------

Rolling for stats to see which I want more, 17 point build or the rolls.

4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 1, 5) = 16 = 15
4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 1, 2) = 11 = 10
4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 4, 6) = 17 = 14
4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 5, 4) = 13 = 12
4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 1, 2) = 7 = 6 (NEEDS REROLLING)
4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 3, 5) = 14 = 13
-- (Reroll) --
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 3, 5) = 19 = 16

Total: 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 10

--------

Keeping the rolls!

Since Crusty is going the nagaji route, I'll aim for the halfling oracle.

even though it's divine in nature, would that spellcasting fall under those sorcery laws?

oh man, let's hope the dice are kind to me.

4d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 6, 4) = 16 13
4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 6, 3) = 16 14
4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 2, 3) = 8 7
4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 1, 5) = 12 11
4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 2, 3) = 11 10
4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 2, 4) = 16 14

And they aren't. That's like what a 12 or 13 point array?I guess I'll see about that 17 point buy route!

I ended up rolling equivilent of a 27 point build myself. o.O

Anyways, I'm going to change my idea up a tad bit.. I'm trying to figure out how I can work Dynasty Founder Story Feat into his background without having to change him into a female. Perhaps, after a lifetime of being under the womens' thumb, he seeks to create a more gender-equal society for Nagaji across the ocean?

He's still going to be a Warrior2/Sorcerer2, as he's none to subtle, but he's slightly above average intelligence for a nagaji, even if he's been raised as a relative brute. An attractive and charsimatic brute, though, considering his charisma level.

Still working on his stats, but heres a rough idea:

Yes, that Arshea.

You can refluff an existing trait, yes. That's kind of what I had in mind. Though you might want a class skill that none of the published traits give or something, give me a good reason your character would have that trait and it's fine. As long as your trait isn't more powerful than the published ones it shouldn't be an issue.

Summoning spells work, as do eidolons. It's spells like Planar Binding that have the calling descriptor that don't work. Basically, there's no way for an outsider to permanently come to Aard, except by going through the abyss and coming out the Scar on foot.

Yeah, the idea was it's a binary star system, and one of them collapses into a black hole. The planet used to orbit them in a figure eight, but now its stuck between them under tremendous pressure from their gravities.

All colors of dragon are available.

Yeah, your first two levels have to be in NPC classes.

d'oh, I missed that.

Jelani, how would you feel about allowing a halfling paladin in this setting to take theTranquil Guardian Archetype

Go for it. Oh, and to your earlier question, Oracles aren't regulated by the laws against arcane magic.

I will back out for now. I was hoping you had some homebrew races (I love playing homebrewed races).

Grand Lodge

Since crusty is going heavy weapon i'll go light imfantry with magus or light cavalry with summoner (either halfling or fletchling)

Mounted Gnome Summoner. I can totally see the pieces falling into place. That or an archer inquisitor. I have always wanted to play one of those too.

4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 2, 3) = 13

4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 2, 4) = 11

4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 5, 2) = 18

4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 6, 1) = 12

4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 1, 2) = 12

4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 6, 1) = 16

Quite nice~

Jelani, can the stats be reordered as I wish? If so, I will take these! I can certainly see a Summoner very easily in these rolls, but the Inquisitor might be harder to build otherwise.

The Exchange

I will try to play we wills see I have not done a home campaign.

4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 5, 2) = 14=13
4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 5, 6) = 16=14
4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 4, 5) = 15=14
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 2, 3) = 16=14
4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 6, 6) = 18=16
4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 2, 1) = 10=9

I will keep my rolls if that is ok and if I am allowed to play. I am making a toon an will put the stats up on here when done. his name will be BoBo and will be a warrior/Fighter Warrior the NPC and Fighter the 3rd and 4th levels.

This is my First non PFS game so I am very exited and hope I can full fill my duties as a commander in the best way needed. Now your statement says that you DO NOT want spoilers when we give you our characters information. Is that correct? I was just a little confused when I read what you said and looked at what your "example" looked like.

4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 3, 4) = 13 = 12
4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 2, 4) = 11 = 9
4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 1, 2) = 9 = 8
4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 3, 5) = 12 = 11
4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 6, 4) = 13 = 12
4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 1, 6) = 9 = 8

A zero point buy. I guess it's not meant to be.

Well, might as well give it a try.

4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 3, 4) = 12
4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 3, 4) = 14
4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 3, 6) = 15
4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 2, 3) = 14
4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 2, 1) = 10
4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 5, 3) = 11

And when you say drop the lowest, I'm assuming you mean the lowest die from each one? And if a roll ends up with less than 7 before the drop, you reroll it?

Let's see what I'll play...

After dropping the lowest those should be 11, 10, 16, 11, 11, 15. Technically it's more than a 17 point buy, but not very good in my opinion.

I'd much rather have the 16,14,12,10,10,10 you can buy with 17 pts.

Either way you can arrange them as you like.

You won't know whether or not you can play until I make my selections after recruitment closes. What I meant about spoilers is I don't want your stats inside spoilers. You can spoiler background, appearance or any abilities that have a lot of text, I just want them positioned like they are in a standard stat block so I know exactly where to find the information I need.

Yes, so you've got a 10, 11, 13, 12, 9, 10. That's only like a 5 point buy or something. You'll be better off taking the 17 pt buy. I find it's best arranged as 16, 14, 12, 10, 10, 10 before racials. Or 16, 14, 14, 10, 10, 7 or 16,14,12,12,10,8 if you don't mind penalties.

@Jelani, what is your opinion of the Nemesis story feat?

Cosmic Dream Lord wrote:
@Jelani, what is your opinion of the Nemesis story feat?

It'd be somewhat challenging to work into this campaign. Your nemesis would need to be one of the NPC members of the expedition, because you won't know anyone on Tel and I don't want to deal with PVP. If you make a nemesis that would have an appropriate reason for being on the journey it could work.

When it comes to the leadership roles, you didn't mention Ruler - is that going to be taken by an NPC?

Yeah, the Emperor himself. You are just a colony. The leader of the colony is the Viceroy.

Viceroy wrote:

The Viceroy represents the Ruler's interests on an ongoing basis in a specific location such as a colony or vassal state (see the optional Vassalage edict). The Viceroy is in effect the Ruler for that territory; her orders are superseded only by direct commands from the Ruler.

Benefit(s): Add half your Intelligence or Wisdom modifier to Economy. You may assume any leadership role (including Ruler) for your colony or vassal state, but any benefit you provide in this role is 1 less than normal; if you do so, you must spend 7 days that month performing duties appropriate to that leadership role in addition to the 7 days spent for Viceroy duties.

Vacancy Penalty: If you have no Viceroy for your vassal state, treat it as if it had the Ruler vacancy penalty.

Edit: I also like your idea of the male suffrage thing. Trying to start a new nest where male and female Nagaji are considered equals. That's a very strong character motivation. History is also full of people doing similar things, so it's very believable.

Oh gotcha.

Well dang.. sadly Intelligence and Wisdom aren't my strong suits, so I'll likely end up as a General or Warden until we can gain our independence after they tax our tea too much and we fight them over it.

Well if Ruler is charisma based, you can assume that role for the colony, and just provide 1 less than normal. That's the Viceroy's power. You could assume any role.

Hmmm well, we'll see then! I'm going to take a bit to finish the char, as I'll admit, his overall personality is not really existant right now except for a few minor ideas. Namely.. brutish, charismatic, unsubtle, and loves big, flashy stuff.

As for his Story Feat, likely his Cohort will be his wife, a female Nagaji he was able to convince of his idea - she herself probably would have been not allowed to breed for whatever reason herself, and thus was unhappy with the current situation.

I was thinking of a demon/devil/evil outsider who was sent to sabotage the mission, but given what you said, I will look at the other story feats. There are certainly plenty to choose from.

There could be some kind of fiend infiltrating the mission, you'd just have to tell me who they are, what kind of creature and what your character knows about it. How did you discover their presence? Why are you after them?

Edit:An oni would be a good choice since they are born on the material plane, and can take the shapes of humanoids.

Grand Lodge

For my role i am thinking of going for banker (that would be covered by the skill bookeeper coreect?)

Behold, for I have dotted with intent to post further!

Or, in more reasonable phrasing: Looks neat, let's see what I come up with.

Algar Lysandris wrote:

Profession (Banker) would work for that. If you want to be some kind of banker, perhaps you could be an agent of the White Asp bank making sure their money is well spent on the trip, or something like that.

Grand Lodge

welcome Viscount K

do we get the 4th level stat increase, or is that only after attaining 4 pc levels?

also, sorry for the flip-flopping, but I'll be going with the halfling oracle.
