Con of the North

February 14-16, 2014
Friday Noon to 2 AM - Saturday 8 AM to 2 AM - Sunday 8 AM to 10 PM
Crowne Plaza Minneapolis West

2014 will mark the third year of Pathfinder Society Organized Play at Con of the North in 2014; we hope to seat 70 tables of Pathfinder Society with ten tables across seven slots of gaming in three days. To accomplish this, we’re going to need an awesome slate of players, GMs, and desk volunteers to help us make this the best gaming experience possible for all the members of our community.

What is Con of the North, and what is its mission statement?

Con of the North is a volunteer run non-profit organization designed solely for the purpose of fostering community among gamers, promoting the hobby of gaming, and providing the gaming community with the best possible environment to present their games (see link). Boasting over 100 events including board games, roleplaying games, miniatures, card games, painting tournaments, and LARP events, Con of the North is one of Minnesota’s premiere gaming conventions.

What kind of presence does Pathfinder Society have at Con of the North?

Pathfinder Society will be in its third year of attendance at Con of the North; last year, we mustered over 45 tables across seven slots of gaming and this year we’re hoping to nearly double that total. We will be offering a wide array of play across Pathfinder Society’s entire scenario and module library including the current Season’s special and, if sufficient interest is expressed, level 12+ play. Scenario listings will be added to the convention schedule and this thread as they become available.

Where do I sign up?

Preregistration opened on July 15, 2013 and can be processed at the Con of the North website at that time. Event submissions open on July 27th, and can be posted as early as the following Monday, the 30th.

How can I help make this event a reality?

The easiest way to volunteer is by GMing one or more slots of Pathfinder Society at the convention. We will need at least twelve volunteers in each slot of Pathfinder Society play; GM rewards include a free Judge badge that gains you entry into the convention and seating if all other registered attendees are saeted. Further swag will be identified closer to the convention. Volunteers will be slotted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Erm, Ryan did you mean 2014 in your post title?

Jeez, you always mess up everything. *prodprod*

You are correct Morgen, I did mean 2014.

Who wants to visit lovely Minnesota in February? Who wants to experience bitterly cold temperature buffeted by windchill ratings in negative digits? Who wants to see the sun shine for maybe 5 hours? I know you do! It may be cold out, but the game room will be cozy warm and libations will warm even the coldest extremity.

What better way to spend Valentine's Day than playing Pathfinder? I will be sure to bring the love.

C'Mon! Who's with me?

4/5 *

Man, if it was any other weekend, a bunch of us would make the drive down from Winnipeg... Myron, Kolby and I were talking about that recently, doing more with our southerly neighbours. Alas, a divorce is not worth a con...

But, JimCon is November 15-17, 2013, and we have Mike Brock coming... You folks should put it on your calendars to come up! Here for details.

Liberty's Edge 1/5

Looking forward to the new venue this year. Hopefully things at work will not interfere with my being able to attend the con.

Ryan, when I know for sure that I am going I will see if you still have need of volunteers.

North winds blow!

South winds blow!

Thunder! Lightning!

SMOG!

People! We can't make Con of the North happen without you and your Spear and Magic Helmet!

And maybe a shotgun guitar....

Jon, did you want to talk about CotN 2014?

Dark Archive 5/5 5/5

Yep.

This thread, what I like to call the thread, is for the upcoming con in February. Sadly, like the Washington Natinals, the thread was titled.

Yer coming to visit, right? I can pencil you in for the Special? Wow, thanks Chris! That's just awesome how you set the bar for volunteering!

Dark Archive 5/5 5/5

No date for Valentine's Day? Looking to visit lovely Minneapolis/St. Paul in the dead of February? Great because we have a con that is just for you! Want to GM a table or three? Let me know and I'll hook you up! Good times are sure to be had by all.

Go here for more information, as well as the Con of the North website, here.

Let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to answer.

I hope to see you there!

Hey Jon, I have a question-

Is leaving my ladyfriend alone for an extended gaming weekend over Valentine's Day foolish or a brilliant set up for some vigorous make-up copulation that will create a new appreciation for each other and bring greater depth to our relationship?

And I am still laughing from that 2 AM session of The Disappeared.

Well, as a friend I would tell you that the former is probably true. As the Venture-Captain and a convention coordinator I am obligated to allow you to believe the latter.

I don't remember the 2 am session of The Disappeared, but I am told I was dancing.

I have only the faintest memory of that game. I think that is for the best.

To answer yer question, Yes.

Dark Archive 4/5

I have a very solid memory of the game. I can definitely give a recounting during the Sat Midnight Madness this year.

As for the dancing......... that is the best role playing i've ever seen

Liberty's Edge 4/5 5/5 ****

Midnight Madness? Sounds... spooky?

I know I am in for the CotN... plans include GMing 4 slots (Wardstone Patrol, Frostfur Captives, and two not yet released scenarios)... playing both Bonekeeps (with the same character... required per Mr. Dehning)... and playing the special!

Sounds like a GREAT weekend (and if we add in lack of sleep, etc)...

It's not so much that the same PC is required, per se, but I just want to inflict as much misery on you as possible. Oh, so much delicious misery. So, so much.

Midnight Madness ought to be renamed "Midnight Debauchery, with role playing."

All sounds good. We've already got a table ready for both! And a lot of prestige saved up, besides. :D

And if people aren't planning to join us in the frosty north of Minnesota, Twin Cities, on Valentines Day...

Why not?!

What a great way to introduce your significant other to gaming.

Freezing Cold and Gamer Nerds! FTW!

Dark Archive 5/5 5/5

Let's go to our local man, Washington E. Washington, stationed in Minneapolis for the weather.

"You got a window? OPEN IT!"

We are just over a month away from Minnesota's premier gaming convention. Who's coming? Who's bringing the pain?

4/5 ****

I shall be back in the Bay Area by then and thus will be attending DundraCon in San Ramon instead.

Assuming it's not completely frozen over my wife and I are going to try and visit for a few days in January though before we head back to California.

If there's anything I can do to help before I head out or from afar, please feel free to let me know.

Grand Lodge 5/5

The winter here in MN while it can be cold but it also can be beautiful. The white snow covering everything is breathtaking at times and almost serene :)

The convention is a blast though. It has been going on for years now... many of them and man is PFS going strong in this area. White it is on Valentines day... you can bring along that significant other and have some fun with her too for the special day! The hotel has a romance package that means she can take advantage of it while you are gaming if that is what she would like to do!! :) Or if she is in to gaming then playing as a couple could be just the thing to romance here in a special way. Even having flowers delivered while she is gaming could really spark things too :)

So there is several things that can be done for Valentines day. I know I am going to have some flowers delivered to her while I am gaming and she is at home. My wife and I are not to in to Valentines day as I try and treat her as everyday being special.. not just one day.

The PFS showing for Con of the North is going to be a nice one. The community here is special in my opinion and one to meet as well. Some of them can really make you as a GM, think. What with some of their antics and clever tactics :)

So come on and make a showing. Valentines day or not... if you are clever and make it as special for her as it is for you as a man.. then the convention is just the spot to make it that way! :)

Hope to see you there!!!

I've never been. I've lived in MN now for 9 years and this'll be my first year. I figured I couldn't pass it up since it's only about 3/4 of a mile from my front door.

That being said, I didn't get to the registration in time. I do plan though to be there all weekend. Do you think I still have a shot at making it into a PFS game?

That's the other reason I'm going: I've never played PFS but always wanted to. I figured at the con I could get into a game, do a little networking, and find a PFS game ongoing in the area for the future.

Also, since I've never been I don't know what to expect. I'll have my wife and kids w/me on Saturday; will there be enough to keep them interested? The girls are 9 and 11 and have played Munchkin, Forbidden Island and a couple sessions of PF.

I'm really stoked. I haven't been to a con since Gen Con in 2000 when 3.0 was announced. MAN I'm old...

Come on down! We'll find a place for you and the family. Although, I do recommend registering post haste if there is a game you are looking at specifically. We do not have control over the ticketing, so register. Now.

Another thing I can recommend is getting everyone a PFS number who plans to play. Having this before the con makes game sessions run smoother. While you are registering, download the guide to organized play and give it a read. This gives you the nuts and bolts of character creation, what is expected of you at a game day, and introduces the factions and other special rules the Society uses.

If you want to attend a local game day before the con, go here. This is our meetup sight which we use for all of our organized game days. There is bound to be one that fits your schedule and geographic needs. We would love to have you and your family join us.

Also, if you have any questions, you can always PM me through paizo.com, or send me an email at venture.lieutenant.mpls@gmail.com. I look forward to meeting you either before or at the con.

jon

Jon,

Pre-reg is closed for events :(. That being said I'm often at FFG in Roseville. I'll get onto Meetup and RSVP for an upcoming game. As far as downloading stuff I have all the free stuff for PFS I can get so I'm fairly well versed.

As far as the fam goes I think they're looking more at the board games. That being said my 11yr old goes back and forth on whether she actually likes RPGs or not, so maybe I can get her to join PFS.

Me and a gaming buddy will be in attendance though all weekend. When I was a kid con "cliques" were clannish, tough to break into. This thread gives me hope though that we'll have some CotN stories of our own by the end of all this. I don't know about dancing til 2am, but I wouldn't mind beer and laughs at a gaming table til all hours!

Dark Archive 5/5 5/5

I am running the Confirmation Friday afternoon, as well as Destiny of the Sands, part 1 twice. Both would be excellent scenarios for the eleven year old. We will also have shorter offerings for her to try, about an hour in length.

There will be stories. And bourbon. That I assure you.

Dark Archive 4/5 5/5 ****

Mark,
I would also concur that you should just show up... There will likely be plenty of opportunities to play PFS... and if not PFS, you could always partake of the many other gaming opportunities at the Con.

I think we have 10-11 tables going for all slots... so I'd be surprised if you can't get your fill of PFS!

Oh, no worries; despite not being able to pre-reg I'll be there. I've already booked an overnight at the hotel so the kids can get in some swimming. And also, thanks to Jon I'm running the calendar of upcoming Meetup PFS games nearby past the wife to make sure I can get out to a game or 2 before I get to the con.

As for games for the kids, they've said they're definitely looking to get in on a board game. Its heartening though to know that there's family friendly PFS games that even without pre-reg I might still get into. I'm so psyched for this!

Liberty's Edge 5/5

We have nearly doubled our schedule of tables at Con of the North this year, from 42 to 71.

I really do think that you will have no problems finding a table to sit at whenever you want.

The Exchange 5/5 RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16

Andrew, have we doubled the room size as well, or are people sitting on one another's shoulders?

Liberty's Edge 5/5

It is in a new hotel, and what we were told is it would be double the size.

4/5 ****

*imagines a room with a ceiling twice as high*

Liberty's Edge 5/5

Now wouldn't that be cool. Have some tables hanging from the ceiling.

"Sorry Bob, you can't go to the restroom, cause if you do you'll fall 10' to the floor"

Silver Crusade

I just found this.. I live in the cities.

Still in need of DM's or non-playing players for the Con? Ive heard of this for a couple of years now. Just never knew what time of the year it was at.

I notice I am couple days past the 5th being thesignup date on the con site.

maybe next year?

Liberty's Edge 5/5

Klokk,

You can still go to the convention and pay at the door. It is $37 for the entire weekend (Friday through Sunday). You can also buy single day passes, which are a bit cheaper.

Currently we have all our GM requirements filled, but we'd certainly welcome you to show up as a new player. We have plenty of scenarios available all weekend that are appropriate for new players that will have brand new characters. We also have a character creation station near our Headquarters that will help new folk create characters and will have a few very short encounters you can go through to see if Pathfinder is a game you might like to try out without having to devote 4 to 6 hours right away.

Come on down! We got a seat for ya!

Silver Crusade

40bucks for the weekend. That aint bad at all I'll be there.

Ill even give Society another shot. Im a crafter, which is why I don't play society games at the source or Fantasyflight or one the other game stores. The no crafting is my only issue with PFS. I know raw, own almost every pathfinder book either in pdf or hard copy.

Ive DMed since 88. Im too old school to refer to myself as a GM. :)

I've run The Kingmaker AP twice for others and once for myself and currently running a homebrew kingdom building + 3 Wrath of the Righteous tables and playing in a skew of pbp here and one Face-face game with Mark a couple posts above me at FantasyFight.

As well as starting up a 4 party downtime competition campaign set within the wrath AP. :)

I know that Pathfinder is the game for me. That is one thing that I do know.

ive even run the three intro PFS mods as well as all of Season 0-3 for my home table just changed names/locations to fit our homebrew world. actually they are on S04-10 Feast of Sigils in a couple weeks.

I cant get over the I cant just go to a smithy and buy some ore and make my own sword.. or find a stick in the woods to make a staff out of it.

Edit: If I could ever convince the 12 guys at my home table to get around to signing up here.. I could actually log those games for credit, right? I dunno exactly how that works.

Edit:2 I understand the logic for the no crafting and no making your own magic items.. in order to make PFS world wide it needs the structures, but as a player that aint for me.. zero issue DMing the stuff, just playing dun seem right to not be able to make something. I mean what dwarf do you know that don't have craft something? in 2e every dwarf got a free non-weapon/craft skill. in Eberron I played only artificers. :D

Liberty's Edge 5/5

Definitely can appreciate that organized play is not for everyone. We will look forward to seeing you at the Con, and maybe in the future at a few game days here and there.

To report, all you really need is numbers. If you request new player numbers you'll get ten. You can hand those out to your players and report the events. Registering their number is up to them, but keeping track of the numbers might be a good idea in case they lose them and later decide to register.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Grand Lodge 5/5

We are so close to the convention now... so close!! I am excited to see this come off as well as did last year. It is a fun time and one that seems to bring out new members to Pathfinder Society in droves for the Minneapolis and St Paul area!! :)

I can honestly say I am a proud member of the Pathfinder Society community for this area!!

Liberty's Edge 5/5

I agree Deanoth! This is going to be an awesome Con!

Liberty's Edge 5/5

Just over one week away!

I've never played PFS before. I know I need to register, but do I just register once ever or do I need to register for every event I ever attend?

Liberty's Edge 5/5

Mark,

For Con of the North, you need to buy a badge to attend the con. Since preregistration is over, you'll need to do so at the door for $37 for the entire weekend.

For PFS in general, you should probably download the free guide to organized play and give it a read through so you understand what the campaign is about.

In short, you register yourself on the link on the Pathfinder Society Landing Page, which will give you a player number (if you already got one of those new player cards, this is where you'd enter the registration code on that card). You only need to do this once for your player number.

Everytime you create a new character, you'll want to officially register that character. Your first character would be your player number with a -1.

In other words, my player number is 25159, and my first character is 25159-1. My second character is 25159-2. And so on.

You can also check out our meetup site at HERE to sing up for the many local games we run weekly throughout the year.

If you have any questions, you can also email me at vltcAChristian@comcast.net where I will be more than willing to help you through the process of registering and creating a character.

The Exchange 3/5

Nothing useful to add, just excited.

Liberty's Edge 5/5

Liberty's Edge 1/5
