Need Bases

Hey Miniature people, I was wondering if I could get your help.

A few months ago I remember Paizo's very own Lisa Stevens popping into a thread and mentioning the millimeter measurements for bases of each size category and I can't find that thread for the life of me. Does anyone happen to have a rough guestimate for base size that I would need for Large and Huge figures? I prefer round bases to square ones, if that helps.

And now to wait and hopefully figure out how to make a Colossal base for my Cthulhu ....

Well, a Large plastic Pathfinder mini's base is 50mm across. I don't have any Huge ones handy to measure.

The standard is a 1" grid (or 25mm), however, as the inches increase the mm don't simply increase by 25mm to match.

As Sean says 2" is 50mm (almost 51mm), but 3" bases are 76mm.

If you google 3" to mm and so on you'll see what I mean. Here's a link http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/inches-mm-conversion-d_751.html

Dungeon Crawler is in the process of creating a colossal 8" figure base from our KickStarter (the Kraken). We are looking at getting extra 8" round bases made. If it's economical, we'll be announcing something soon. :)

Alas! Me either. :(

Sounds like my Cthulhu Mini is going to need to go into the briny depths soon.

I do need to still figure out how to base my Huge minis.

Did you participate in the Reaper kickstarter, Sean? I'm trying to decide if I should base my Pathfinder Red Dragon as a Large mini or a Huge mini. He looks a little bit smaller physically than the Jabberwock, who is definetely Huge, but Wayne Reynold's art makes the dragon look Huge. What do you think?

We will be offering; small (20mm), 1x1, 2x1, 2x2, 3x3 for certain - 3x3 would be our "huge" bases.

You can see the results of our kickstarter here http://www.dungeoncrawler.com/kickstarter_2013/index.html

I think huge is a good call on the Red Dragon.

I backed the Reaper KS but didn't go whole-hog on tons of minis... I have enough unpainted minis as it is. :p

Standard (25mm) and large (50mm) round bases are easily available on eBay - including ones with pre-cast terrain.
Actual wargaming bases at 75mm (and larger) are difficult to find (unless DungeonCrawler start selling their bases, as mentioned above), since most bases of that size are rectangular 50mm x 75mm monstrous cavalry bases.
So it might be easier to make your own (materials could be hardboard, thick plasticard, MDF or plexiglass - foamboard might work too, but it'll not be as sturdy. Most other materials tend to warp or otherwise deteriorate quickly)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I've used so many different things for bases that I don't even think of "standard" bases anymore. When I was re-basing several hundred Mage Knight miniatures I purchased a box of 1" wooden disks from an online wood supply store for mere pennies per base. I've even made molds and cast preformed bases from casting resin.

For my largest minis I frequently don't even have a base, instead I have a bit of clear plastic cut to different base sizes and put the "miniature" on that so that areas of effect can be seen.

Now that is a great idea. Bravo!
