Knocked Prone after fail to move by an opponent w acrobatics check?

Rules Questions

The Exchange

At Mobicon, a venture captain told me that I would be knocked prone if I failed my acrobatics check to move pass an opponent and was hit with their opportunity attack. Is that correct?

My understanding of the rule:

1) Failed acrobatics check to move past an enemy triggers an opportunity attack but you continue your move unless tripped or otherwise affected by the attack.

2) Failed acrobatics check to move THROUGH the enemy's space triggers an opportunity attack and if hit you do not move through the enemy's space.

Am I misunderstanding the rule?

That's not perfectly accurate.

Whenever you fail an Acrobatics check to move through an opponent's threatened squares, it triggers an attack of opportunity; if you were attempting to move through an opponent's space, your movement is also stopped.

If you are damaged while using Acrobatics, you must make a second check at the same DC; failure on this check indicates that your movement ends and you fall prone.

The bit about always stopping movement when tumbling through an opponent's space was released as errata, I believe.

What kind of opponent was it? Some creatures can trip on a successful attack, such as wolves. In such a case failing to make an acrobatics check and getting hit by an attack of opportunity could cause being knocked prone (provided the enemy succeeds at its CMB check.)

Can you give me some more information on the encounter?

Where is this written? It's the first I've heard of it.

The line you (and the OP's GM) may be thinking of is this: "If you take damage while using Acrobatics, you must immediately make another Acrobatics check at the same DC to avoid falling or being knocked prone." But that only applies to using Acrobatics to move on narrow surfaces and uneven ground (the old Balance skill check).

@Troubleshooter: The part about being damaged while using Acrobatics is in the paragraph about moving on narrow or uneven surfaces. That comes before the paragraph about moving through a threatened area, so I don't believe it applies.

The creature could have had some sort of ability that drops you prone or simply used his AoO to trip you.

Acrobatics: What happens if I fail the check when using this skill to move through an enemy's square?

You lose the move action and provoke an AOO. (Note: This means you can attempt this up to two times in the same round, once as a move action and once as a standard action.)

Update: Page 88—In the Acrobatics skill, at the end of the third paragraph (which begins on page 87), add the following sentence: “If you attempt to move through an enemy’s space and fail the check, you lose the move action and provoke an attack of opportunity.”

As others have noted, it's possible that the enemy tripped you or has some other ability which allows him to knock you prone.

Hmm. All the words are there to support my point ... but they're in a very strange place if they're supposed to cover the entire acrobatics skill, and the FAQ says nothing about being tripped.

Alright, I suppose I'm more convinced that you don't risk becoming prone than that you do.
