Nualia survived and fled, sooooo

Rise of the Runelords

So I was thinking of having her in her wounded condition, go back to hunt down the PC's in revenge, with one of the PC's of a player who no longer plays leaving the area, only to be tracked down and killed by the now somewhat psychotic woman.

This is when she heads to Aldern for help, as the Brothers of Seven could have told her to report to him in case anything goes wrong, or if she needs assistance.

At which point, the PC's find her waiting for them at the entrance/pathway to Foxglove Manor/The Misgivings. Only, she's half-naked (one of the PC's removed her armour when she was unconscious (on -1hp) at Thistletop, but through intervention, awoke and escaped, dishonoured and furious during the PC's battle against Malfeshnekor), bleeding heavily and is slumped to her knee's with the fallen PC's hammer (Earthbreaker) dug in the ground, head hanging down under the darkened sky of night, rain around her falling hard.

She'll then go on about how the PC's have dishonoured her, how nobody is there for her anymore, and will begin to cry out with rage as she stands and confronts them. However, being outside of Vorel's place, and having been there for a long time, she'll no doubt be fatigued and not only that, the madness of the haunts and Vorel's power would have reached her and given her a split personality. One of a helpless girl, reminding those of her younger years, and one of the rage ridden Lamashtu lover.

I feel this could be an interesting encounter before the troubles of the Manor find the PC's, and may offer a creepier atmosphere, turning even a strong character such as her, into a haunted and emotional wreck.

So, my question is, do any of you on here have anything you'd like to add to this/feel you can add anything that'll work and be better, or just have any suggestions in general?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

No no, that sounds like a most disturbing start to this. Especially if you have a chance of her reverting personalities when she's hurt. So one moment she's the vengeful priestess... and then she's pleading and begging them not to hurt her. It'll be twisting the knife even further if she calls one of the PCs "father" - referring to the man who raised her. (Best if a male cleric or paladin is "selected" for this role.)

My GMPC is a Cleric. A drunken Cleric (Ferocity and Healing Domains) of Cayden, but a Cleric all the same.

I have one PC who's been here from the start and was knocked unconscious by Nualia in their encounter. The PC who she killed was meant to have been killed in the fight, but due to not wanting to kill the PC, I as the GM, fell into the trap of making her ignore him instead of going with the brutal approach for her, and she dealt 70 damage to my Cleric in one blow (crit and confirmed) leaving him on 1hp.

The players of the other party members no longer play, so really it's just Tristan (the 15 year old Half-Elf Rogue/Magus played by my gf), Brik (the 27 year old drunk Human fighter/Cleric, husband of Syanna who was r**** and murdered - a Half-Elf), then two new PC's. One that's an ex-Mercernary Tiefling Rogue/Ranger who's on the path to redemption, and a Human Fighter by the name of Jackery, who grew up with Bandits, but through the loss of a friend, decided to carry on his best friends dream to create a world of good for all within it, leaving the life of a murderer and thief behind.

Characters:
Tristan - Half-Elf. Tristan's parents were murdered by Goblins. He now hates Goblins. Deputy Sheriff, taken in by Belor. Idolises Brik. Lawful Neutral.

Brik - Local drunk, known to Belor but causes little trouble for people. Brik's wife was raped and murdered by someone for seemingly no reason other than a murder stemmed from putrid lust for the woman, by a Half-Elf hating man. Brik needs to find this man to reveal why he did it. Chaotic Good.

Deimos - Tiefling who's negative and has had a hard life as a merc, but is now working for a priestess to help aid Sandpoint by request of Father Zantus. Neutral.

Jackery - Ex-Bandit, now aiding Sandpoint to help create a better world in his friends memory. Neutral Good.

Deimos hasn't come in yet, but all of these characters either have harsh or tragic histories. Brik see's Tristan as the son he never had and will at some point adopt the boy, but only Brik and Tristan know of Nualia and the things that went on at Thistletop.

So, I have my work cut out for me. I just want this to be terrifying and memorable. Not so sure if I want the PC's to fight Nualia and be weakened before they enter this treacherous Manor mind!

But yea, the issue is apart from my Cleric, I don't think a PC is suitable for the "Father" role, which is a shame because it means this may not have as much impact, so I was thinking I could either have her as a story sequence or have her in a weakened state with no Cleric/Anti-Paladin powers left, and only her will and brute strength to aid her, so she's a lot weaker than she was at Thistletop.

I guess then if people wanted to redeem her they could, because her evil side would possibly fall away from the shock, revealing a helpless little girl trapped in the body of a beautiful woman.

No, no. Your Cleric would be the fine target for "Fathering" here. It doesn't matter how your character reacts. It's the horror on the faces of the PLAYERS as they realize what happened to her that is key.

You can even take it one notch further and in her begging suggest that her "father" may have taken liberties with her after she was pregnant. Even if he didn't, her broken mind might believe it... and it's the horror of the party members even before they enter into the Manor that matters.

What's more... you can have them take her captive... and then the whole group are driven into the Manor by Carrion Swarms. Thus they have to deal with HER switches in personality even as the house tries to drive them insane.

For bonus points, be sure to have a thunderstorm approaching as they get close to the house. Include the patter of rain on the windows, rumbles of thunder... flashes of lightning to illuminate stained glass windows. Environment is key in developing a proper sense of horror. :)

Yea? They learned of her harsh childhood at Thistletop, through magic that allowed them to see her when she was younger, through being locked in the toilets at her school only to be free'd by Chopper, having stones thrown at her, being bullied, having her hair cut, courting the nasty boy who took her purity.

Tristan knows that, though he's the only one as my GMPC wasn't there then. This was before he came in once again to save Tristan's life, but although slightly gruff, Brik is a caring person who believes everyone should have a free spirit, so maybe what Nualia see's in him is the Father she felt she deserved but didn't have?

I'll need to somehow introduce Deimos into the party here, possibly on the way somehow, but yea I'm pretty sure her father didn't abuse her in any way. He only wanted her to go through with what he had planned.
