School transmutation [earth]; Level alchemist 1, druid 1, sorcerer/wizard 1
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, M (a chip of granite)
Range personal
Target you
Duration 1 minute/level (D)
This spell transforms your hands into living stone. While this spell is in effect, your unarmed strikes do not provoke attacks of opportunity and deal 1d6 points of lethal bludgeoning damage (1d4 if you are Small). In addition, your unarmed strikes ignore the hardness of any object with a hardness less than 8.
The first sentence talks about your hands and the rest talks about your unarmed strikes. Is the first sentence just fluff text or does it contradict the rest of the spells language.

Both and neither. The first sentance strongly suggests a RAI interpretation that would mean you only get those benefits with Unarmed Strikes that use your fists. While RAW would suggest otherwise since Unarmed Strikes are not strictly limited to fist.
In other words, it is up to the DM on how they interpret that. If you aren't sure how the DM will interpret it, then it is better to assume the more limited version and be pleasantly surprised when he rules the more open version than to assume the more open version and be disappointed when he rules the more limited version.
