DwarvenForge Dungeontiles Kickstarter - 25th of March

Miniatures

Grand Lodge

This is for all the game masters who like to use 3D terrain. It aims mainly for new collectors.

DwarvenForge on Facebook

So what is it about?

Stefan and Jeff are still pretty secretive about any details. Yes - I know what is is about (I have seen some pictures several weeks ago) but I'm not allowed to spill the beans.

So lets see what Stefan has posted on the DwarvenForge Forum

Stefan wrote:

please don't expect anything really "fancy" or "elaborate" just yet....we will continue with our high end line of products and hope we don't get a real drop off in support there...our new line is really exciting, especially for new collectors...If we can get lots of new collectors on board our old time collectors will also benefit...

Other bits leaked out so far

1) it is 3D
2) it is a different material (made from 'dwarvenite')
3) it is compatible

Fill in the missing pieces yourself - or wait for just 4 more days and it all be revealed.

I just received my first two sets of Dwarven Forge terrain (passageways and room and rooms) a couple of weeks ago. They are awesome and I'd buy a ton more but all the really cool sets are out of stock. Definitely interested in this Kickstarter, though.

Grand Lodge

John

All the cool stuff will be coming back. DF (US) has plans to get as much restocked as possible once the Kickstarter is finished. Alas it might be later in the year.

I'm responsible for DF Europe and I'm already planning on restocks now for Christmas (this is sad) to ensure some sets don't run out. I already hope/fear that I might run out of some sets faster as originally expected if the KS is a success and there is also more interest in the original sets as well.

Good to hear. I'd love to get my hands on some of the wicked edition sets, the caverns, catacombs, and the 6x6 floor tiles. I'm excited to see what this Kickstarter is. Now, I just have to find room in my house for all of it :).

Grand Lodge

John

An interesting list - these are exactly the sets (apart of Cavern) which I expect will be the first ones I run out as well. But all of these are also highest in priority on my re-order list.

I can't speak for the US - but I would expect they have similar priorities. One advantage I have - my market is smaller - this means I tend to have more space left in my container. I never had to cut a set yet because I lacked space.

Sovereign Court

The kickstarter is up, and has hit the 50k funding goal.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dwarvenforge/dwarven-forges-game-tiles- revolutionary-miniature

Grand Lodge

First stretch goal announced for 75K - 4 extra straight walls for each set.

Stefan wanted to make it more and more enticing the bigger it would get.

Wow, this thing is popular. From the time I clicked the link, watched the video, read through the pledge levels and completed my pledge it has gone up 6000$.

Sovereign Court

I own 4 sets of the dental plaster / resiny stuff. The normal DF really is a high quality product that looks fantastic placed when placed on a table.

The shipping cost is a bit brutal, but it is hard to ship bulky stuff like this via post. Wish they had a Canadian distributor.

There is no better product on the market. I own 100 sets of DF and you will be AMAZED at the quality of this new line on Kickstarter. Get your sets NOW because after only 5-6 hours they only have literally a couple slots left at different pledge levels!

Grand Lodge

The first stretch goal - 4 free walls / set is reached.

Sovereign Court

When it reaches 100k:

Quote:

$100,000 = 3 FREE 2x2 Floors with every set you back. So, if you backed us for 5 sets -- at $100,000 in funding you will get 15 2x2 Floors for FREE (as well as the 20 free Straight Walls from the $75,000 Stretch Goal).

So the 120 pledge is shaping up to be 8 extra walls, 6 extra floor tiles. Presumably 150k will be more corners.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 8

I'm in for three sets right now. Looking forward to more stretch goals.

Sovereign Court

Some people want to win the lottery so they can live in a mansion, quit work or own fast cars.

I just want to be able to afford Dwarven Forge.

Especially if you live in the UK.
That's quite a decent chunk of postage, although that looks like a nice deal.

Grand Lodge

DSXMachina
I will get it eventually for sale here. So shipping will be a lot less. But it will be without the extras. Guess at the moment it is still a better deal to wait - but this might change depending how much free stuff is added on.
I'm even at several conventions. Lugged around many boxes to Conception but nobody wanted to buy :(

Sovereign Court

I played some dungeon crawl classics once with a GM who owned a pile of Dwarven Forge.

It was awesome, genuinely does enhance the experience.

Helped that he was a cool Gm too.

I know, I really wish it does brilliantly well. Just bit of a pity it's virtually 50% extra for those outside the US. Makes $1=£1.

Although hopefully if it does well enough, it might become a good deal. And I hope it 'kickstarts' the local convention circuit for you Thod, I know since the Reaper KS many more people have been buying mini's. Hopefully this does for scenery what Reaper did for mini's.

Grand Lodge

DSXMachina
The whole reason I started this in the UK was because I was one of the people buying it from the US - and always gnashing my teeth because of the high postage cost.
Off course the new tiles are a big step back in the economy for item cost / shipping cost.
The item cost goes down considerably - shipping won't go down as much as it's not much lighter. But smaller boxes could help as well.

Nice. I have a lot of Dwarven Forge terrain now... and it looks like more coming :) Have to let my brother know, he likes it as well.

Now would be the time to do it. With the stretch goals, you'll get a lot for your money. I bought my first two sets only a month ago (rooms and room and passage) and I love them. I wanted another room set so this Kickstarter is perfect. The three sets I'll be getting with the stretch goal freebies plus what I have now will be more than enough to cover my regular gaming (kitchen) table. However, I don't know if I can wait until October without ordering another set or two of something. Most of sets with the curvy pieces are out of stock so I may have to settle for the ruins and narrow passages.

@Aberzombie I'm telling you..you will be SO glad you took the plunge within 30 seconds of when you open the box and look at your new DF sets!

As a matter of fact, it will be a rare situation when someone opens their DF sets from the Kickstarter and then regrets not ordering more of them. This terrain takes your GMing to the top level of gaming. There is no better terrain or experience than using DF! The gamers eyes go all "deer in headlights" when they see a DF setup for the first time! It's SO worth it!

What say you?

Scarab Sages

More than likely, I'll end up skipping this. I don't really think the dwarven forge stuff is worth it for me unless I have a metric crap ton of it. And even though the kickstarter may give you a lot of bang for your buck, there's no guarantee the regular price of the new stuff will be cost effective. For now, I think my flip mats and markers will have to do.

Grand Lodge

I agree Aberzombie you do need a lot of this stuff to make it work right. I have several sets and it is often not enough. But with this KS, I may have enough to be very functional going forward. So if you already have some of this stuff this is a great opportunity to expand. And truthfully, even if you don't have any, this KS is a great opportunity to get started with the best terrain options available in the marketplace.

The ruins set is one of my favorite sets. In the future I will buy two more for sure. It really adds character to the dungeon to have the crumbled wall here and there.

I really want the narrow passage set. I finish my PhD this year and after 5 years of living super poor I told my wife that she didn't have to worry about me buying a crazy car to celebrate but as soon as Dwarven Forge restocks I am going nuts.

@Asphere
I just did my first mega dungeon and I used my ruins set for the first time. As I think you're aware I've only been collecting DF for 18 months. I can't wait for my group to get to that part of my dungeon. I have seven secret pit traps set up in that large room. It's really cool to put that removable 1" square over the tile and, walla you have a pit trap, that even I have trouble seeing, and I know where the floor traps are!

Yeah but if you go in for 5 sets there is a possibility that you will wind up with 10 sets after the stretch goals are met. I am in for 3 right now and already with the stretch goals I am getting an extra set and then some. I may up it to 5 because with what I already have and with stretch goals I could build a massive dungeon.

This is what I tell my wife when I go to spend money like this: If I had a different hobby I would probably spend way more. If I restored cars think about what that would cost. Playing golf get expensive super fast. Hiking can get really really expensive. Drinking fine Scotches would be a hobby that would dwarf my dwarven forge addiction (pun intended). So I made her choose: Cheap whiskey + dwarven forge or expensive scotch.

Remember you can do more than just make dungeons. You can make buildings too! Check out my recent blog update for some examples (I made some roofs from Hirst Molds, hobby sticks, or just grass flock). Just a warning - this is from a ROTRL module so don't look if you are worried about spoilers.

Edit: Here is a link to some DF roofs made with hirst arts molds over at the DF forum. This is where I got the idea.

That is awesome. That happened to me too. I forgot which tile came from the ruins set and had to force my players to avert their eyes while I went around trying to lift each tile up to check.

I think my Legendary Terrain Kickstarter stuff should be arriving soon, so maybe that will give me my fix, but I definitely thinking I'll have to purchase something between now and October. Especially if they do a restock...oh, boy...I hope they can do a big one.

Assuming the $400k stretch goal will be met (and there's no reason not to), here's some fun math:

1 Set
Investment: $65
No. of pieces: 34
Cost/piece: $1.91

2 Sets
Investment: $120
No. of pieces: 106
Cost/piece: $1.13

3 Sets
Investment: $175
No. of pieces: 159
Cost/piece: $1.10

5 Sets
Investment: $260
No. of pieces: 265
Cost/piece: $0.98

10 Sets
Investment: $500
No. of pieces: 530
Cost/piece: $0.94

Ever since I saw Dwarven Forge advertised years ago in a Dungeon (or was it Dragon...?) magazine, I've wanted some.

Now, with this Kickstarter, that dream will finally come true.

This is the next reaper kickstarter when it comes to value. I keep upping my backing because the value is amazing.

Starfinder Superscriber

I have a few sets that I bought years ago when I had a great job, but now with this kickstarter...man I'll have to keep an eye on this.

Who said anything about 5 sets? I am in at the base level ($120) where stretch goals are applicable. This will be plenty with what I already own. And this level would be a great place to start for someone who doesn't have Dwarven Forge or deep pockets.

Yeah if you already have some sets this is a great way to bulk them up. I have two rooms & passage sets, 1 wicked additions 1&2 sets, and the advanced builder set. I am always having problems adding large rooms though (plenty of passages). I pledged for 5 sets so I can add huge rooms and fill in a lot of gaps on the table with secret areas and what not. This kickstarter rocks!

I want to back this project, but the shipping to the UK is so exorbitantly expensive that I simple cannot justify it. Especially when their are options like Terraclips and Hirst arts, which work out cheaper, and/or provide a greater variety

Shadow Lodge

Well with the stretch goals increasing the number of pieces maybe the shipping would be more bearable? I feel you though.

For me, Hirst Arts provides me with the ability to create custom pieces to use in tandem with my DF stuff. The idea of casting everything needed for a massive multi-game dungeon and then putting it all together seems so tedious and boring. Making custom pieces takes way less time and is a lot of fun. I just can't spend the time making full dungeons with Hirst Arts due to family and work.

I am pledging for 5 painted sets with the current stretch goals nets me almost 7 full painted sets. I will never need any more than that.

This kickstarter allows me to bulk up on room space for a super cheap price (I am in the states so I don't have to consider shipping). I can't wait to get the new Hirst Inn molds though. I am going to order them in May and go nuts. I think I will use them to build some static buildings (I have some roof molds) like a lumber mill, alchemical shop, magic shop, and maybe the inn he has shown.

For the quantity of product you're getting from the KS the shipping is about right. (As in yes it is expensive, but any international shipping is)

For comparison, I paid $85.87 in shipping and handling for one case of Shattered Star minis in my subscription here. Comparing that to what is coming from a two-three set pledge on the KS is pretty favorable.

Note: Not discounting the other options out there, and terraclips is one example of a flatpack system that would ship cheap. Fat Dragon pdfs would also skip the shipping conundrum.

Yeah, it just would be nice if they could ship a container to Europe and then distribute from there. It could lower the costs and open up the European market so that Thod, or the European distributors would get more orders in future.

Shadow Lodge

Check out the new stretch goals! Curved walls and floors! With all of these free pieces it doesn't make any sense to get in on this one:

Yea it's gonna be fun. They're probably a month out from getting to that part of my adventure. They have to survive scaling the mountain right now.

Yea marc that was a great "nod" to one of the two guys that started RPGs. That was a real class act by Stefan (creator of Dwarven Forge).

For those of you "on the fence" with ordering consider this;

This KS WILL increase to 1.3-1.7 million from what I'm seeing. This means for every set you order you will receive another set FOR FREE.

This means the sets will be priced around $30-40 for each set when taking into account the free set. A new non-Kickstarter set is $119+shipping and isn't as durable as the KS sets.
PLUS, you're getting items like triangles, curved walls, that DO NOT come with the standard Room & Passage Set.

It's a NO BRAINER to be buying these sets. This is a 17 year old company with only 2 full time employees, so open your wallet and give them your money!

I just saw this for INTERNATIONAL ORDERS:

Go to Dwarvenforge.com and look in the Europe Forum. There is a small discount code for shipping overseas.

Also remember the price of the sets will continue to drop as the funds go up!

You can also take up a group collection from your RPG friends and it will help a lot by doing a group order with shipping.

Liberty's Edge

Hey hey! The latest update also included a video demonstrating just how much punishment these tiles can take. I particularly liked the tile vs truck sequence. Pillars were also mentioned, and rumours of larger floor tiles and different types of doors. The deals just keep on coming!

Go to the posts on the Kickstarter or the Dwarven Forge forums and ask about Canadian shipping costs. You will have an answer within the same day most likely.
