Hello James,
I have just recently got around to reading a few PathfinderNovels( Plague of Shadows, Winter Witch, and I am currently in the middle of Prince of Wolves). I enjoyed them so much I went to my local B&N and brought three more.
I tend to like reading these novels as it gives you a veiw into the gaming world that can be useful. Like I really like the depiction of a forlorn elf with Elyana in Plague of Shadows...which give me a little insight on to play such a character.
Which leads to my question...Is there any of the novels where the protangonist is a whorshipper of Calistria...or even a side character? (Besides the sorta of one in Plague of Shadows).
I plan on eventualy reading them all...just wondering the order.

Which of the new classes are you most excited to make stories for?
Hmm... you know, I haven't actually thought about it much yet! I could see the skald being pretty fun--bards in fiction always seem to be the lute-and-floppy-hat sort, and it'd be nice to turn that on its head...
"And the next contestant in 'Kalsgard's Got Talent' is..."
"UNGAR THE MIGHTY IS BEST SINGER!" *smashes judges' table*
"And there we have it! The judges are giving Ungar three not-yet-broken thumbs up! Now for some words from our sponsors..."

Nonexistent! I already have plans for how he may advance in future novels, with hints dropped in The Redemption Engine... :D

Fiiiiiinnnnnnee I'll buy two. One to read. And one to use as a salesman's copy to show all my friends why they should also buy the book. Happy now?

Since you wrote City of Strangers, I'd like to ask about Kaer Maga. I know the city's a massive melting pot of weird, so much so that I pretty much hear the Star Wars Cantina music every time I think of it, but where would the best place in the city to set an establishment where very different people mingle on a regular basis is the main thing? A sort of inn/restaurant/casino/brothel, if you will. I'm workin' on a free-form RP set in such a place, and was wondering what district to place it in.
Also, would it make sense for psionic people to be found in Kaer Maga? I figured if you'd find them ANYWHERE on Golarion it'd be there, especially since there's probably all sorts of strange metaphysical weirdness going on there already with the caulborn.

The best place for an inn/restaurant/whatever like you describe would be Hospice, in the Core Districts... that's where you'd get the most crossover between bizarre locals and bizarre travelers just passing through. Everybody in the city visits Hospice at least occasionally.
And sure, if there are psionic folks anywhere, they're probably in Kaer Maga! I feel like Ankar-Te would be the best spot for them, as even Kaer Magans see that district as inhabited by the exotic and strange...
Glad you're enjoying the city!

I know Shoanti are more James' sphere of influence, but I'm looking for advice on playing a Shoanti paladin. James has already told me that such a character would likely have been "civilized" to some extent, which is what I intended for the character anyway, born to a Shoanti mother who lived and raised him in Korvosa. I'm trying to figure out ways to show how the character has a foot in two very different worlds, displaying his mother's tribal heritage with pride, but at the same time venerating a singular deity (Sarenrae), rather than following the animistic worldview of the Shoanti and taking on trappings more akin to a Chelaxian knight than a Shoanti brave. Wielding Shoanti weapons like klars or totem spears is an easy option, but it's somewhat shallow, and I'd like to explore the idea of the character being a bridge between the worlds of Korvosan and Shoanti to its fullest extent. Any ideas? Thanks again! :)

I think that's all in how you play the character, and you're already well on your way, so just roll with it--when you need to make a decision, think of how a Korvosan character would respond and how a Shoanti would respond. If those two aren't the same--congratulations, that's the conflict currently roiling inside your PC. Now you just have to decide how you deal with it. :D

Something that just occurred to me. The title Death's Heretic could refer to multiple people in the story.
Salim with his occupation and atheism.
(Don't have the book on me so I don't know the names off the top of my head for the other two).
The Father who participates in the auction and wins the elixir in order to stave off death.
And the Antagonist.
Was this intentional?

Yes! And I actually think it applies to Salim on two different levels as well. Nicely reasoned. :D

Hi Mr. Sutter!
1. Happy Holidays!
2. Wrath of the Righteous has the possibility of vastly changing the face of Golarion. While I know from the other James that none of the APs are considered to have happened for canon purposes, Dave Gross's novels assume that the previous novels did happen for the purposes of subsequent novels of his. Do you have a plan for how the Count and Radovan's aid in the latest novel will be resolved? Will the end of Wrath be considered canon for the novel line?

Happy holidays to you, too!
You're correct that we intentionally tied King of Chaos to Wrath of the Righteous, which we don't normally do. In this case, we felt like it was worth it for the fun of seeing everything linked together (and give players another view of the war as a way to get them more engaged). That means that, yes, for future Radovan and Jeggare novels, Wrath of the Righteous will be presumed to have happened. The nice thing about the novel line, though, is that outside of individual series, we generally don't pin down their chronology--there's nothing to say that the events of Nightglass can't happen after those in Liar's Blade, for instance. When in doubt, for both novels and modules/APs, we still presume that everything is simultaneous or could go in any order, and that won't change except on rare special occasions. So most new novels we put out won't assume anything about Wrath of the Righteous.
Hope that clears things up!

Considering their hatred of the gods, would Lamia be welcomed or found useful in Rahadoum?
As chaotic evil creatures, they'd probably still have a big problem in Rahadoum (where most folks are not evil, at least by the conventions of their society). That said, the Rahadoumi would probably identify with any creatures who have an axe to grind with the gods, and might be more willing to attempt "redeeming" them...

Probably! If we ever do a planar book covering psychopomps, I'll have to figure out what they are. :) Though I'm hoping to do some major reveals about Ceyanan's backstory in a third Salim novel...

Which Wayne Reynolds cover illustration from the Core Rulebook line do you think has the most narrative potential?
I'm going to cheat and say his cover for Pathfinder Campaign Setting: The Great Beyond! That image directly inspired significant parts of Death's Heretic, so I'd say its narrative potential is proven. :D

SUPER CHEATING BECAUSE THAT PRODUCT ISN'T PART OF THE HARDCOVER RULEBOOK LINE (in fact, I think The Great Beyond might predate the Hardcover Rulebook line) ... BUT ... its a cool piece of trivia, so I'll happily accept it. Thank you for the insight, Senior Sutter!

Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis have said that after their first experience in writing Dragonlance into a novel, they decided to kick the gamesystem to the curb when it got in the way of writing the story they wanted to tell. What's your perspective in writing RPG based novels from your expereince?

I haven't done anything yet save started musing and collecting ideas, but the wheels are turning... And even once I've got a solid plan, I'll still have to run it past an elite panel of my colleagues first to make sure I'm not totally off-base with something. A big part of Paizo's strength comes from telling each other which of our ideas are dumb. ;)

With all due respect to Tracy and Margaret, if I were their editor for that project, I would say "BZZZZT WRONG ANSWER TRY AGAIN."
The whole point of gaming tie-in fiction is to let people experience the game and world from a different perspective. If you want to ignore the game, you're just writing original fiction, and should publish it as such. While there are of course elements that I'm okay bending for narrative flow--describing a round-by-round Pathfinder combat doesn't make for a fast-flowing, cinematic fight scene--I make sure that everything is still feasible within the rules. This is most obvious with magic--if you want to write Pathfinder fiction, you need to operate within the Pathfinder magic system, as otherwise you risk knocking readers right out of the story. Working within that framework while having it feel smooth and natural is a skill I demand from my authors.
Does that make it harder than just writing whatever you want? Of course. But that's the price of admission to come use a game's toys and perform for its audience. And as a tie-in author myself, I try to pay that price with a minimum of teeth-gnashing. :D
