I'm sure there's already a thread about this. I just feel like the rogue archetype makes one of my favorite classes.... terribly ineffectual. It's more like a support fighter that can't fight now.
My question: is there a way to make the swashbuckler work, make it a combat machine like it was in 3.x?

Absolutely, though it would either take a fresh re-write or a homebrew twist. Care if I take a stab at it and want to tell me what you think? And if so, would you want it to be similar to the 3.5 Swashbuckler or what would be your general take?
EDIT: Check out this Swashbuckler that's already been done. At first glance, it appears to be well done and well thought out. It's similar to the 3.5 Swashbuckler except they get a quasi-sneak attack instead of Insightful Strike, which means you don't have to focus on INT if you don't want to. In fact, it doesn't look like any of the abilities key off of CHA either.
EDIT#2: On second look, this Swashbuckler is a tad unbalanced, namely the Find the Mark ability. It is a heck of a good start though, and with a bit of tweaking/rebalancing it's a good take.

Add this.
At 3rd level, a rogue may choose one of the following sets of conditions to exploit. Against an opponent who does not normally qualify for sneak attack but is under the effects of one of the selected conditions, a rogue may apply half of her sneak attack damage(rounded down) as precision damage with a successful attack. At 7th level and every four levels thereafter, the rogue may select another set of conditions.*Compromised - foe is Prone or standing up from Prone.
*Fear - foe is Frightened, Panicked, or Shaken.
*Lethargy - foe is Fatigued or Exhausted.
*Obscuration - foe has Concealment.
*Pain - foe is under a Bleed or Pain effect.
*Queasiness - foe is Sickened or Nauseated.
*Restraint - foe is Entangled or Grappled.
*Sensory Deprivation - foe is Dazzled, Deafened, or under temporary loss of a primary sense (Blindsense, etc).
*Shock - foe is Dazed, Disabled, or Staggered.
Improves chances to deal sneak attack.

I have written a homebrewn Swashbuckler core class which I just recently updated and vetted on the Suggestions forum. You can download it here, if you have any interest ( PDF uploaded via Google documents ).

Do you have a proper place somewhere for the public to leave feedback on this? In a nutshell: I like your take better than the 3pp one I saw, though I do have some qualms about a few details. :)

I prefer the 3.5 swashbuckler. I do not like the swashbuckler having sneak attack, it doesn't particularly go with the way I want to role play this character I am trying to build.
He's an intelligent, dexterous nobleman who fights using a rapier and dirk. He uses his intelligence to score deadly hits and dexterity to pull classic swashbuckler stunts like fighting on narrow railings and charging over difficult terrain.

Sure, here's the link to the recent thread on the Suggestions forum. I won't be able to give detailed answers for the next few days, since I am soon leaving work for my RP group, will return late at night and will be visiting a convention the next two days. But I'll definitely get to it!
