Rise of the Runelords ninja build

Advice

Silver Crusade

So I'm about to start the RotR AP. There will be 4 of us. One dwarf cleric, one fighter/tanky type, one wizard/sorcerer, and me.

I was leaning towards playing a catfolk ninja. Can anybody help me with ability scores, traits, and feats?

Also, would another class compliment this group better?

Hard to say what would compliment the group better without knowing more about the other group members, or group dynamics from a tactics stand point. The only resource your group members dont really have covered is a skill monkey and someone to disarm traps. Ninja covers the skill monkey but so does ranger. There is a archtype for sorcerers that can handle the traps if your guy is going that route.

Without more information I cant really give you more than that. Are you set on the ninja idea? or what kind of a concept did you want to play?

Silver Crusade

All of us are new to Pathfinder and some new to RPGs in general. I'd like to play a ninja, but I'm not dead set on it.

There is nothing wrong with the ninja class, but its not the only class that can be the skill monkey. Still cant help more without knowing most about the other PCs. I can tell you this: after the first 2 modules, Alot of creatures have reach and with only the Fighter/tank to help you flank it might be hard to get off those sneak attacks. That will really nerf your damage down. Do you konw if the cleric will be putting resources into being in melee?

Grand Lodge

What do you want out of the Ninja class?

Shadow Lodge

Try the Classic Ninja for inspiration?

Silver Crusade

The cleric will be melee capable, yes. It will not be his focus, however,

As far as the other players, assume they are not min maxed, although we will have an experienced GM who will be helping us along in character creation. I am the most experienced player in the group, and I only have 4 scenarios under my belt.

Why use Combat Trick on weapon focus instead of using the weapon training talent? Sounds like a waste.

If I'm going to play a ninja, I'd really like to play a catfolk. I usually play PFS so I don't get to play them normally.

Grand Lodge

Catfolk is a must. That's cool, I dig them.

Now, what do you want to do?

What do you want from the Ninja class?

Is it just the "Ninja" name of the class that attracts you?

What sort of role, in and out of combat, would you like to fill?

I think he used the weapon training talent for shuriken at level 6.

Ah, it wasn't designated as a trick, so that it being at an even level slipped by me.

Well so far it does not look like we have a party face, so that's a role I wouldn't mind playing, since it gives me. Chance to role play and not just roll play.

As somebody said earlier, we also don't have a trap finder. As far as in combat goes, I've always liked the slippery, hard to find and hit characters in RPGs.

Now, can you help me with a 20 pt buy for abilities as well as traits and feats? I understand catfolk get natural weapons so I was considering using those and eventually getting the claw blades.

Disclaimer:I have never built a ninja

Feats to keep in mind:Nimble Striker, WeaponFinesse*, Dodge, Mobility, SpringAttack, Weapon Focus(claws, you can pick this with with ninja trick if you wanted), Improved Initiative

Talents to keep in mind:Vicious Claws, Vanishing Trick, InvisibleBlade(at lvl 10), FastStealth, ShadowClone

STR:14
DEX:14+2=16
CON:13
INT:12
WIS:10-2=8
CHA:14+2=16

This are not Optimized (im not a fan of dumping a stat) but then your stats will also be dictated by you choice of play style and feats. With the set up I have here you dont need to pick up Weapon Finesse. If you want, you can dump STR and take Weapon Finesse. I wouldnt dump it lower than a 10 though. Also, if your not gonna put your level 4 bump into CON then swap it out with INT so you can have the option of Combat Expertise. I dont like the WIS score here so feel free to bump it.

The more I look at it, I would pick up a level of MoMS or Unarmed Fighter and dip into the cranesytle feats. Probably take two levels in MoMS for evasion and +3 to all my saves. The Crane Line will allow you the defenses to be in combat and flank with the fighter and make use of your natural attacks with sneak attack. I would do my best to get a 3rd natural attack (bite).

All this Hinges on how your going to play him, the bonus of Natural attacks is alot of attacks, but then your going to be exposed. Or you can just fight with a weapon and focus on getting one really good sneak attack hit in per round but being safely out of retaliation range afterwards with spring attack or vanishing after the attack.

Any ideas on what way your going to play him?

Silver Crusade

The more I have been thinking about it, the more I am considering just making a human ninja that dual-wields wakizashis and taking Weapon Finesse and Two-weapon Fighting at level one along with Reactionary and Indomitable Will traits.

If I do that I'm going to put everything, later feats and ninja tricks, into being the stealthiest ninja that ever ninjaed.

Grand Lodge

RotRL is not trap heavy.

Have you considered the Inquisitor?

A Heretic Inquisitor of Yaezhing is more than Ninja enough.

Nab the Heresy Inquisition, and have your face, and sneak.

Also, the Find Traps spell, is an Inquisitor Spell.

Why? If you want to be a Catfolk, I think that a catfolk with natural weapons is vastly superior to the dual wielding wakizashis. Dont let it intimidate you off of the concept you want to play.

I'm playing an inquisitor in PFS play right now. It's fun, but not fun enough to make me play another one right away. Oh and Conversion inquisition works well for making an inquisitor into a face without having it become a MAD character.

And Slacker, mainly because I know nothing about catfolk and neither does my DM. I'd probably end up taking a bunch of needless feats and such.

Silver Crusade

One last question.

Where can I find the RotRL player blurb thing? I searched the RotRL anniversary edition (the one my GM said we are playing), but couldn't find the thing for the players to read.

Chances are I was looking in the wrong place.

Silver Crusade

Blackbloodtroll where does that god come from?

Grand Lodge

Yaezhing is a Dragon Empires god.

You already have people from the Dragon Empires right there as prominent NPCs in RotRL.

You will fit the flavor with such gods.

Do you prefer using a Katana?

That's doable too.

Silver Crusade

Actually I was considering that heretic inquisitor character and using a scythe.

How would I go about having katana proficiency?

Shizuru, as his favored weapon is the Katana.
