Ability score tomes

Advice

Just out of curiosity, what happens to the cost of an ability score tome when you bypass the spell requirement? If you don't have to cast a wish spell, then the material component isn't consumed I would imagine.

Alternatively, how do you break down the cost of tomes? I know the component cost is added in, but I'm not super familiar with how many diamonds are required for each book. Diamonds of that quality are hard to find, so it would be great if I could bypass the requirement for them.

It remains the same.

For each +1, a 25,000gp diamond.

While we are on the topic, I am assuming due to how Wish is worded, that if I read a book of increased con +2, and later find a +1 book of con and a +2 book of con, I actually gain NOTHING by reading the additional tomes?

Conversely the tomes themselves do not say such a thing in their description. I wonder how it works.

Each book grants an inherent bonus to the statistic, as do wishes, so the books don't stack with each other nor with wish. Only the largest inherent bonus applies.

I am not sure of the official ruling on stat books, but I've always ruled that since each +1 costs 27,500 then there is no difference between reading five +1 books and a single +5 book (or any combination in between).

It makes a difference in PFS, because a player might not have enough Fame for the +5 tome. Other campaigns might have availability limits that work similarly (for example, sharp limits on major magic items).

Maybe for PFS it matters, but the total cost for 5 +1 books is the same as 1 +5 book so in regular table play i would say they stack to a total of +5..

Yes, they wouldn't stack per RAW, but I'd be hard pressed to run it that way in a campaign. How many times does a PC have access to 5 wishes in a career, let alone 5 at one time? If they can bootstrap themselves up with 5 +1 tomes or wishes, I say let it happen, even though it does violate RAW.

Actually per RAW as long they're done successively they do stack. However, if you break up the castings/usages then they do not.
