Cyrus Laskaris |
So this is Cyrus, the guy that I'm planning on submitting to RoW PbP recruitment threads when they pop up. My plan for him is to go straight Barbarian until I can meet the requirements for Mammoth Lord, and stick in that until the end of the campaign.
I want to start him off as being an "unwilling" Barbarian, as it were. He doesn't initially have a lot of control over when he rages; when he takes some damage, he goes nutso. He hates that part of himself at first, but over the course of the first adventure, he grows to accept that the rage is part of who he is and at that point gains more control over the ability.
What y'all think?

I'm playing a Weapon Master Aldori Swordlord named Volk, who, after leaving Rostov due to losing his family to a cruel twist of fate, has got swept up in the Snows of Summer.

I have three characters produced for this campaign,
(Part 1) Yuki
Yuki, the daughter of a Tian woodsman who was supposedly saved by a young woman during snowstorm in the forest. 9 months later, he finds a baby girl on his doorstep with a note from the snow woman. Yuki however was a strange child with her blue and gold eyes snow pale skin and ravens hair whom was raised with the help of an elderly woman who began to teach her the secrets of witchcraft. After her fathers death from illness, the old woman revealed to Yuki that she was her mother and desired for her to follow in her footsteps and become a hag like her. However due to the old woman tendency to cause misfortune on others an inquisitioner found the hag and killed her. Yuki didn't mind though as she didn't want to become an old hag and now dwells in the village of her birth waiting for the right season to roll in so she could leave the village and travel to the realm of eternal winter and beautiful snow queens the hag told her about.
Yuki is a changeling witch with the winter witch archetype who will later on take levels in the winter witch prestige class. And has a familiar weasel named Shiro. She has long silken ravens hair, pale skin, and her two separate colored eyes, one blue and one gold. wearing a white blouse and a black bodice with a long flowing white and blue skirt that comes down to her ankles, with a fur lined coat. She carries her mothers white staff engraved with incantations and snowflakes and he fathers backpack.

(Part 2) Varg
Varg is an Ulfen fighter whose family has served the ravens guard for 5 generations, loyal to the king of Taldor and to their family. Growing up in the north he was trained by his grandfather how to fight and be a great warrior, instilling in him a strong sense of duty and honor. When he came of age he went south to Taldor and joined the raven guard wielding his families ancestral axe and shield in the kings service. Now a middle aged man, he prepares himself for his retirement from duty and a chance to leave all the pageantry and return home, but first he is sent on one final mission from the king to find a missing noblewoman and bring her back safe and well. Heaving his axe upon his shoulder he sets out to a small village shrouded in winter to look for the missing noblewoman and finally return home.
Varg is a fighter with the Viking archetype, and specializes with the Battleaxe and shield. Wearing fur and chain-mail with graying blond hair and beard standing over six feet high, with pale blue eyes. His shield carries the emblem of his house and his axe made of cold iron with a raven flanking its dull gray head. Wearing the magic fur boots his mother gave him before she died when he was a hound boy.

(Part 3) Sammy Black
Sam was born and raised in Alkenstar to a gunsmith and his wife in a small building where they lived on the second floor while his father had his shop on the first floor. Sam was always fascinated with stories of monsters and heroes, seeing them as nothing but fantasy due to living much of his life in the mana wastes where the closest thing to magic was the work of the alchemist who lived next door. When he was old enough his father taught him the art of gun making hoping his son would follow in his footsteps. But Sam while skilled at creating and inventing firearms, being able to dismantle and reassemble any firearm he can get his hands on, and being able to figure out how to make that firearm and produce the ammunition it needs, he was more interested in trying them out. Being able to shoot any target he was dared too and loving the thunder of the gun and the satisfaction when he hit his target. However, when he turned 17, his father finally convinced him to take up the family business and any hope of becoming a gunslinger seemed long gone.
That all changed the day his father was discovered to be smuggling firearms out of Alkenstar for a profit, The government then seized their assets leaving Sam without a home or a job. Seeing his chance he said his heartfull farewell to his father, broke into the shop which had yet to have its contents auctioned and sold, and took all the tools he needed to be a gunslinger along with four of his fathers best guns, two pistols that never needed to reload, a blunderbuss that could spew fire along with bullets and pellets, and a musket that was reliable and could shoot farther then any other musket. He then smuggled himself out of Alkenstar, took a boat from Quantium to Oppara and spending his days as a showman, displaying his talents for money and spending some of that money on booze to drown his sorrow for his fathers imprisonment. Now 27, he finds himself stuck in a small village caught in the midst of winter debating weather to wait it out and stay in the tavern till the storm blows over or take his chance and hope to save a few damsels in distress and maybe even find a princess to marry (though that would be unlikely).
Sam is a Talden gunslinger who is down on his luck and needs to get some action in his life. His brown hair cropped short so it won't get in his face and be easy to clean, with warm brown eyes that seem to light with fire when angered and a stubble. Wearing a brown trench coat, leather best, two bandoliers and a set of leather boots.

Cyrus: I love the flavor, based on what I've seen so far. As I've no idea about the Mammoth Lord, I can't critique it, but I really like the idea that you've posted so far. He might find some affinity in the raging Mammoth-beasts (perhaps after he witnesses musth*) that would help him become a Mammoth Lord? As barbarians are no longer illiterate, he could be from anywhere with the back story you have for him.
* Warning - could be kind of gross.
Yuki: she has some amount of similarities to a character I created that was inspired by this upcoming path. So, neat! (I'm planning on a series of articles called "You Can Use This", which have ideas for people to place into their Campaign Settings - especially Golarion, but really anything - if they need something similar quickly.)
I'll likely post more thoughts on things later.

Any idea on specifics for the character? I built Cyrus using a 20-point build, so will have to modify it if I end up in a 15-point game, and it may end up shaking the stats up some. What plans do you have for Volk?
I built Vol as well using a 20-point build Fighter Weaponmaster with Weapon Focus and Power Attack at first level. I went with Sword Scion trait to pick up the dueling sword and tie him to Rostov. I may go with one of the new traits from People of the North to round him out.
As for his backstory, this is what I have so far...
Who you are: Volk Собака (Wolf Dog), an aspiring Swordlord of Rostov.
What your major personal conflict: Searching for the three men whose treachery lead to my family's death.
What your character desires most: Revenge at the moment.

Cyrus: I actually just meant I didn't know the class at all, so thanks. Sadly, the immediate problem I see is having an animal companion. Is there a barbarian archetype (or something else) that grants you one?
If there isn't, you'll be able to use Pathfinder Player Companion: Animal Archive to provide the Barbarian class with an animal companion
Edit: Mad Dog Barbarian seems to be an archetype that will provide a companion.

The Mounted Fury archetype in the APG provides an animal companion at level five treated as four levels lower, and the feat Boon Companion from Pathfinder Chronicles: Seekers of Secrets allows you to treat one animal companion as if it were four levels higher, to a maximum of your character level, so you could still enter Mammoth Rider at level 10 instead of having to wait until level 12.
Tacticslion |
From looking at the feat, looking at the archetype, and looking at the prestige class, it sounds very doable. :)
(It's funny - I still revert to the 3.5 mindset sometimes and was wondering "wait, why can't you take it at 6th level, with BAB +6, 9 skill ranks, and druid level of 6th..." and then I remembered that you don't get bonus skills at first level, you get class skill boons. Sigh. :D)
Tacticslion |
You know... I'm actually considering letting a PC do that in my game if they want. Anyway, RAW, obviously not, but your build (from what I've seen) is sound, and I like the flavor.
What do you think of the flavor of finding the rage of Mammoths (or whatever) similar to his own as his reasons?
Also, although tardy: thanks Anorak. :)
Phillip0614 |
I like the flavor idea of looking at Mammoths to get the inspiration for becoming a Mammoth Rider, and I'm sure he'd have had more than enough opportunity to see the beasts in action by level 10. Of course, it's also possible that shortly after taking the first level he'll come across the dragonriders on Triaxus and, while I do think a Mammoth is inherently awesome, being a dragonrider would be beyond cool.

the group is still in concept mode:
Snow elf Horselord Ranger archetype
Half Elf (drow descended) Arctic Druid
A halfling sandman bard
Some kind of witch or cleric, undecided.
The Snow elf idea was adopted from the elf gates in second darkness when the players met one. Scimitar and shield fighting style, going for some cool riding beasty like a winter wolf or giant snow leopard.
half elf player figured the frozen north would be a place where a light sensitive creature would go, there is some anticipation for much underground/ice cave spelunking. Wants to have a polar bear animal companion.
A halfling bard....Nooooooo, my wife has been wanting to play a bard forever. nooooo.
I think the fourth is going to be a WHW, but im hoping it will be a cleric....

Initial concepts, waiting on release of AP guide to finalize:
Changeling (annis) witch (beast bonded, Healing patron); cat familiar; starting hexes are Feral Speech and Healing (Extra Hex for 1st level feat); primary healer; planning on witch 8/ranger 1/eldritch knight shapeshifter type progression.
Dwarf (Craftsman, Giant Hunter, Hardy, Mountaineer, Rock Stepper alternate racial traits) summoner (linnorm eidolon); planning on item crafting (armor and weapons at least; 12 Int so as to achieve +8 on Craft checks to create metal and stone objects with only 2 ranks) and Eldritch Heritage (Draconic) feat tree for improved combat ability.
Human (Ulfen; Heart of the Fields/Profession (Sailor)) barbarian (titan mauler); planning on covering locks/traps duties (Vagabond Child trait; Int 13 and Fast Learner for 6 Skill Ranks per level) and taking the World Serpent Totem rage powers.
Human (Kellid; Heart of the Wilderness) druid (arctic druid; elephant/mammoth companion from Bestiary); Eschew Materials, Toughness; planning on switching between Mounted Combat and Wild Shape later on.
This party will be very strong in combat and should have a decent mix of buffing, controlling, healing, skills (the summoner has the fewest skill ranks with 3 per level; favored class bonus is going toward the eidolon's natural armor), and utility.

oh are there going to be giants?
Considering the developer/editor comments regarding links between the Reign of Winter AP and The Witchwar Legacy module, it's a good possibility...
