Can Opposition Research (UM) help Thassilonian Specialists (ISM)?

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

I was wondering whether or not the Opposition Research arcane discovery (Ultimate Magic p. 86) could help ameliorate the restrictions put on specialist wizards using the Thassilonian magic variant (Inner Sea Magic p. 17).

A Thassilonian specialist would have to be L 9 before he could take the Opposition Research discovery. If allowed to use that arcane discovery, then the spells from one of his two specific prohibited schools would suddenly be available for learning and for being used from spell trigger/completion magic items without the use of the Use Magic Device skill. In this case, spells from the formerly prohibited, now only opposition school would cost double the normal daily slot cost to prepare, etc. as per normal specialist wizards.

Thoughts? Too easy/over-powered? Acceptable?

Has JJ or anyone else from Paizo made a comment/ruling/whatever on this topic?

Nope; one of the main points of the Thassilonian method of magic is that they can't use their opposition magic. This really helps to make these types of wizards feel different than modern wizards; it's an older method of using magic, after all. On top of that, it's meant to hearken back to the specialist wizard of 2nd edition D&D to a certain extent, and even to 1st edition's illusionist class.

A Thassilonian specialist who figures out how to use their oppositional spells essentially abandons their Thassilonian specialty and becomes a normal wizard, in other words. Keeping their opposition schools inviolate is what makes them what they are; removing that lessens them.

Thanks for the quick - and in-depth - reply! :)
