Had a random thought worth sharing. Part of what makes this game so enticing is the sandbox. Why not build the game to dump out various RSS like feeds. Fan sites and ambitious debs could pick those up and make "newspaper" like updates that could be shared on a blog or via email.
Personally, I would love to get a little fun reading at work. Picture getting "Harpo's World Digest" each day, or once per week. Talk of new settlements, major events, major monsters killed, player vs. player wars, etc.
It would give players a way to enjoy all the in game drama, get pumped p to take part, and even a way to share with friend. "Check it out! We made the Goblin Gazette!" Posted to Facebook....

i am hoping GW will use API for this game, this will allow people to develop their own applications for the game.
Examples of a game who did it, eve online:
Killboard
signatures
territory map (that one is the best idea)
Dotlan
and more, if API can be incorporated with it and we can use it for say a wanted poster or a bounty to be updated and that can be posted then

I'd love to see the ability to manage my skills when I'm out of game implemented. The same goes for the OPs desire to see newspapers/etc and Psyblade's mention of the territory map. Those would all be incredible.
I'd like to be able to access economic info as well - Iron ore is trading at XX coins/lb in settlement A and YY coins/lb in settlement B, etc. That might not make as much sense with the limited means of communication we have in-world, but we do have magic... I'd be interested (as a magic user) in maintaining a regional comm network. Magical SA? ^_^

For those interested to see what Eve API has done for the game:
Dotlan (you can also see the amount of ships killed in the different systems
Battleclinic Here you can see the kills, loadouts and people can submit loadouts and have discussions about them (there are corp/alliance killboards but battleclinic is just a general one)
eve market data the name says it all, you can look up the prices and region
evemon this is what most pod pilots use to figure out what skills to go for, with the API you can upload your char into it and then see what skills you need for certain ships etc.
As said, just some ideas they came up with. But I am sure some would be good for PFO, but others (like a killboard) might not be, unless we are going to get notifications on death/kills etc, then it would be nice)
