In general, a mount, a familiar or mundane pet, and your class-granted animal(s) are acceptable, but more than that can be disruptive.

Am I reading this correctly, that if (for example) a character was a Cavalier / Wizard, he is allowed to have both his bonded mount and his familiar in play at the same time? I had previously thought not, but on rereading this FAQ entry it appears that he can.

That's what it looks like, I've never run into it, so I don't know what I would do outside of having them all go on the same initiative for simplicity's sake.

Sounds like it to me as well, but the line "The GM may ask you to select one" may still apply. If you were riding your mount and just using your familiar, that would be perfectly ok imho. If you were NOT riding your mount, and controlling effectively 3 characters every turn, I might consider saying the familiar needs to stay with you.

Expect table variation I guess.

I've only seen one person use their familiar. Most people hide it away and pretend it doesn't exist.

I've been curious about this as well. I've got a Saurian Shaman Druid with a raptor AC who's looking at taking Eldritch heritage to get a Compy familiar. I've been wondering if he'd still get the compy's init bonus and Alertness if he uses his Raptor for combat. I'd never send the compy to attack anything, that's just crazy.

It gets even funnier, when it's a tatoo familiar. It literally is just a tramp stamp and isn't targetable...unless your also a plumber or something.
