I think the pay is part of a diplomacy style discussion with you and the entity based on what you are asking of it and how long it will take. It's possible if what you are asking is so in alignment with the creatures goals that they may not ask anything.
The coautl for example really likes helping people see description below:
Couatls are servants of lawful and good deities, though some operate independently of any greater being. Respected and admired for their wisdom and beauty, they try to steer mortals onto the right path and use their powers to fight evil, particularly those known to shift between the planes. Some couatls are viewed as benevolent gods by isolated societies, and while most couatls cringe at the thought of pretending to be a god, they allow such misconceptions to continue since they allow the couatls to guide and coax these societies onto paths of peace and cooperation with their neighbors. A couatl is about 12 feet long, with a wingspan of about 15 feet. It weighs 1,800 pounds.
As native outsiders, couatls must eat. They prefer the same foods as true snakes, such as mammals and birds, though they have been known to eat evil humanoids.
As they would rather spend their time promoting their agenda than hunting, couatls appreciate offers of food, particularly small boars and large game fowl.
A couatl sometimes shows its favor to an adventurer or party that has done it a service by gifting the group with 1d4 of its brightly colored feathers. Such a freely given feather, if used as an additional material component, allows a spellcaster to cast planar ally to conjure that specific couatl without expending the typical payment of gold or other valuables—provided the the couatl approves of the service asked for by the spellcaster.

Welll... That is a good question. You could ask it to guard something, cast a spell, retrieve something, provide services. Summoned Monsters generally fight for you, then leave. Planar Allies can do more. Think of the spell like a favor from a mob boss: if you ask for something simple, the payment might be simple, like a certain amount of gold. If the task is difficult, the ally might ask for a magic item, or a comparable favor. For really big favors, like 'My love has died, please bring him back from being annihilated by that sphere!' it may ask for a year of service from you.
It really depends.
Feel free to go wild.

Sorry for disappearing... Lots of stuff, not enough time to post.
Please DM Ruperta for the time being.
Wow. That was harsh! So Ruperta and Slumper are still dancing.
Don't despair! You can do it!
Pai Kromnite
Okay, I have got Pai leveled.
4 HP plus 2 Con + 1 FC
+ 1 to Intelligence (which gives me an extra 2nd level and 6th level bonus per day)
New spells: Disintegrate, SMVI
+ 1 BAB
+1 F,R,W
+1 5th and 6th level spells/day\
Skills added 7: I forgot which I added actually, but most of them were Knowledges, lol.
Pai Kromnite
We also need to come up with a plan. Are we going to go back and try to clear out the other baddies and save our buddies's souls or not? I've not heard everyone chime in yet.
Please check in with your votes, so we can make a decision how to proceed.
Slumper
I don't see how we can beat the demilich with what you've uncovered. Is there a way to free the soulink that we think is accomplishable like on the dragon? First priority is the city, Slumper doesn't like it but would consider his friends sacrificies necessary to accomplish saving the city.
Ruperta of Hetzau
Hit Points (+3 CON +1 Favoreed Class): 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
+1 CON
+1 BAB
+1 All Saving Throws
+1 Level 5 spell
+1 Level 6 spell
3 Skill points (Diplomacy the 3 of them)
Pai Kromnite
Pai would really like to save the others but I just don't see how we can dish out the raw damage to beat the monstrous thing we took the sword from. Let alone the demilich. Maybe if we beat the Queen we can hire someone to cast a wish for us or something.
Is there anywhere we can go shopping DM? Pai needs to upgrade her intelligence item, if nothing else.
Corbyn Barrett
Sorry, guys, a lot of things have been preventing me from getting on here.
I am caught up on the posts. In character, Corbyn really doesn't care whether or not we work towards freeing the souls. If we do, he would prefer a method that has the greatest guarantee of his own survival and profit.
For my 12th level rogue talent, I am taking Crippling Strike. As a heads-up to the DM, my sneak attacks will now do 2 dmg to STR (crippling strike) and 1 damage to DEX (ninja trick: pressure points)
Ruperta of Hetzau
Ideas:
- Cast Hallow with Death Ward effect
- Fly on Corbyn, Thrak and Slumper
- Paxs casts Haste
- Ruperta casts Blessing of Fervor
- Slumper uses the new Sword
- Pai and Paxs uses spells with no Spell resistance
- Ruperta uses her crossbow and Clustered Shots
We got the "drop" on it on the "surprise" round.... maybe we can even drop it there and then!
Ruperta of Hetzau
Well, Death Ward give us a +4 morale bonus to the save...
Maybe cast silence to avoid it altogether?
The point is Ruperta will want to try releasing all the souls trapped there. And nothing short of knocking her out and take her away unconscious will stop her.

loot so far since entering death castle...
+2 lance, belt of giant strength +2 The treasure here includes 7,030 gp, 18,445 sp, and 39,800 cp. Scattered among the coins are various gemstones worth a total of 5,800 gp, and among the battered and dented gear itself are three masterwork greatswords, a masterwork halberd, a mithral breastplate, an adamantine battleaxe, a +1 lawful outsider bane greatsword, a Small suit of +3 chainmail, and a staff of necromancy.
19 beautifully crafted gemstones (worth 250 gp each) and a magical pick. Examination reveals it to be a +3 aberration-bane heavy pick!
+ whatever your sword is.
Paxs
Paxs and Thrak both would have horrible times of that save as well. I unfortuantely do not have any no save dmg spells, i just have buffs and crowd control really. Paxs is more of a utility knife with all of my damage coming from Thrak, which he does quite well at and just got a little bit better this level

Let me know when you have a plan. You could leave, but leaving means that the soul of Zellara and Laori are devoured by the castle. Of course, you could decide to come back and tangle with the Castle after you see to Korvosa... That would eventually free all the souls currently imprisoned.

DESCRIPTION
Serithtial is a +4 holy Zon-Kuthon bane sword crafted, it is said, by Iomedae herself as a gift to Mandraivus’s great-grandfather, a man who led several crusades from Cheliax against Nidal. The sword was handed down through the generations, finally coming to the hands of a well-respected hero of Lastwall—Mandraivus. Forged to aid his ancestor against the shadowcounts of Nidal, Serithtial was the perfect weapon for his assault on Scarwall, and some scholars of history now believe that Iomedae had foreseen its need and forged it early to ensure that Mandraivus would not only inherit it, but would respect its traditions all the more.
Although made of steel, Serithtial is treated as being made of both cold iron and silver for the purposes of penetrating damage reduction. Serithtial glows with the equivalent of a continual flame, but her wielder can extinguish or ignite this glow as a move-equivalent action. Although Serithtial was forged as a bastard sword, and it is to this shape she reverts when no one wields her, the sword can detect what sort of blade its current owner favors, and when held in the hand, immediately transforms into the type of blade its owner is most proficient in.
Although Serithtial is lawful good, as long as her wielder is dedicated to the defeat of Kazavon and those he has corrupted (such as Queen Ileosa), she does not attempt to seize control of her wielder. If her wielder does go against her wishes, she tries to force him to relinquish her to a more appropriate wielder.

I think the DM has it. I say clearing out the castle should be our last concern. That place is a death trap, and I'm not confident we can get through it. Let's go back to town and focus on defeating the Queen. Maybe we could recover enough items to help us save Laori's and Zellara's souls.
Ruperta of Hetzau
Well, you will have to physically drag Ruperta to stop her from trying.
I really think we can pull it off...
She can teleport us all to Magnimar (for example), get the needed stuff, and come back to defeat the demilich.
Her plan would be to cast Hallow, all the buffs we can (and we can get many), get as many summoned creatures to help us (and we can summon many) and let the fireworks fly.
She will give Serithiel to Slumper.
Slumper, Corbyn and Thrack would have fly to follow the skull around, and silence to prevent her screams to kill us.
Slumper and Corbyn would have Shield Other on, so Ruperta can "share" her hit points with them, too.
Our Mysterious Benefactor
Okay, so the module actually advises about the demilich being nigh-unbeatable. There's a GM aside in there about using it.
I quote the aside, from James Jacobs: "Characters are going to die in this encounter. If your group is okay with this level of danger, that’s fine, but for most groups, you might want to foreshadow the demilich a bit."
That being said, if you want to try it, let's roll!
Pai Kromnite
I have to vote no. I really want to see if we can fight our way through to the end of this adventure. We are getting close to seeing the light at the end of the tunnel of the whole AP, and I'd hate to get massacred by an opponent we can avoid. For the time being. We can come back and get it later and free the souls. If that option wasn't there, then I'd be all in favor of the Charge of the Light Brigade is it is.
Slumper
I vote no and will drag you kicking and screaming with a promise to go back to our demise together after we save the thousands in the city.
Pray for revere the dead, but let's save the living.
Our Mysterious Benefactor
Alright! So Ruperta lives to sulk another day! :)
Where does Pai teleport you to, then?
