Available Spells for Spellcasters

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Hi,

just starting to grasp the Pathfinder Rules (coming from old AD&D times). I have a question with reagrd to starting spells:
It seems all spellcasters can select their known spells from the full list of available spells. How do I give than the player a feeling of finding something new in a dungeon. If all spells are already known to him, than he will never have this "Oh, a new spell" feeling during adventures.
Also, the sheer number of available spells will break a newcomers mind. I cannot expect a newcomer to skim through ALL available spells for his class.

Is anyone using random spell selection rules for this purpose ? Or all of you giving a 1st level newbie the full list of 1st level spells to select ?

Any comment appreciated.

Michael

Well you don´t assume the Characters know all spells it´s more like they want to achieve a certain purpose with their magic and kind of "discover" a spell that does just that. Wizards especially.

As for random spell selection: DON´T DO IT MAN :).

Spellcasters ,especially arcane guys, are their spells. If someone doesn´t want to look over all spells then Sorcerers and Wizards are not for him. You could limit it to CRB only though.

Hi Sleet,

thanks for the reply. I was thinking along the same lines. Keep the Core Rulebook spells as initial pool for the spell casters to play with and introduce the spells from other rulebooks/supplements incrementally via "finding in dungeon" or "knowledgeable NPCs".

Gridphoenix:

Wizards and sorcerers gain spells differently. RAW allows wizards to choose to learn a certain number of any allowed spell each level. However, they still can find scrolls or spellbooks during their adventuring career and also learn those.

Sorcerers gain "known" spells only when they level, but by RAW they too can choose any allowable spell.

While the GM can modify these rules any way they like, it's generally considered poor form to tell a wizard or sorcerer that a spell they want is not possible to learn with their allowed automatic spell learning on leveling up.

Hi Adamantine Dragon (a fellow dragon :)),

I think I understood the difference. My question was only about NOT overwhelming the new players with a million of spells.

Anyway, thanks for the comment.
