Please explain the WiiU / Wiiware / Legacy Controller situation

Video Games

What I'm finding online has me going in circles, so might as well ask. :) I'm a relative console virgin and never owned a Wii, but plan to get a WiiU. In addition to new games, I'm interested in playing some pre-U Wii titles and very interested in getting past console games from the Wii store thingie.

But I have read that those older games will not work with the controller that comes packed with the new console and so I will also need a different controller. I went to the store today and saw both wand-style Wii controllers (Wiimotes? Wiimotes plus?) that I vaguely recognize, but now U-branded, and more conventional controllers that look like the x-box controller I bought for my PC a few years back.

Which of those is the one I want to play, for example, the last Mario game for the Wii and/or the original Zelda game? Or is it "whichever because they do all the same stuff"?

Just get whatever the most current Nintendo Wiimote is, and that should work as long as it is compatible with the Wii. Wiimotes made for the Wii will also work with the Wii U; I've re-synced two of my old controllers for the new system, and they should allow you to play Wii Zelda games.

Edit: You will also want to get the Wiimote 'nunchuck' attachment in order to play a zelda game. For the newest zelda, you'll want to make sure the Wiimote itself also supports 'wii motion plus' (all new Wiimotes should have this).

From my understanding, when the WiiU goes into "Wii Mode", ONLY Wii accessories will work with it...WiiU accessories with NOT work. So if you're playing a Wii game or a Virtual Console game, you would NOT be able to use the WiiU Pro Controller.

Thanks guys. Picked up the console and New Super Mario Bros. U today. I'll worry about getting a wiimote when I'm tired of it.

Either way...I will be playing with my wii. My wii is black. Should I see a doctor? Is this because I've played with it too much already? I've barely touched the thing. Will leaving it in the wii cradle help? Is the sensor bar telling Nintendo every time I play with my wii?

I'm twelve. :)

I measured them in the store. It's not true. Black Wiis are exactly the same size as white Wiis.

They're both fun once you get your hands on them.

Just remember to hold on tight.

But I advice using some sort of plastic protection with your Wii. Sure, your hands will get more sweaty if you play with it too much, but at least your Wii will stay clean.

Just be mindful when you show your Wii to people. If you swing it too hard, you can hit them in the face.

As for the Wii U, how is it so far? I've been pondering about getting one as well.

I think Monita (the Wii U Nintendoland interface) is Siri's autistic step sister

I'm not a big connoisseur of console gaming, but I really like it. I probably derive a bit more enjoyment than is warranted from being able to watch youtube on my TV, but I got the new Mario game and after hours of updates, etc, last night I've gotten in two solid hours playtime so far. I'm deliberately pacing myself so it doesn't consume my entire life for the next week or two.

The games in the pack-in disk (Nintendoland) have left me a bit cold. They seem to be more about showing off the controller's abilities, which is fine, but my idea of fun doesn't involve contorting my arms around a race track's curves.

Hm, I see. Thanks a lot for the insight.

How's the wireless, by the way? Is playing on the controller as seamless as playing on the main screen?

The potential to use this thing while on the toilet is just too much for me not to ask.

My controller is usually around 4-6 feet away from my Wii and does fine, but I can't speak to the signal strength past that. I know when it was first mated it had to be very close, but that seemed to be a one-time thing. I've had it briefly as far away as 7-8 feet, but I was only using it for the internet then and so can't speak to game performance.

My controller's not drained anymore, so I did a little range test. It works out as far as about fifteen feet with a clear line of sight.

Further testing: I successfully played a level of Mario at about 20 feet out, but the connection dropped immediately when I went around a corner.
