I would argue that the "true" opposite of the paladin (both axes) would be some sort of assassin.
If you remember the original anti-paladin he was able to perform assassination exactly like the assassin, but the anti-paladin is more a serial killer than a hired killer.
I again agree with you writing the "opposite of a paladin would be undisciplined, and likely destructive without a cause other than its own amusement..." but I see here no contradiction with the anti-paladin.

The Antipaladin's "code of conduct" is "rape, pillage, steal, destroy, kill, murder, salt the fields." You are required to pretty much play the epitome of THAT GUY to play an Antipaladin properly. It says so directly in the bit about "falling" if you perform a Good act.
I very much believe the class would be far more reasonable for play if it was LE, yeah. And personally, I have no opinion on the matter beyond the fact that "Dark Knight" is an AWFUL name for the class, because then it attracts every Batman-wannabe, who then end up playing full-on Chaotic Stupid.
Just wanted to point out that an Anti-Paladin only falls if he ALTRUISTICALLY commits a good act. As long as the good act furthers his own goals or will in some way bring about a greater destruction he's all right.
Save a man from being sacrificed by an evil cult ruling the town? Good act. Do it with the intention of angering the cult into taking revenge on said town for foiling their "Sacred Rite" and throwing more fuel on the sacrifice to a dark god for destructive power fire? Definitely furthers his goals in a bigger way.

Oh, I agree that Anti-paladins can absolutely be subversive like that. I'd actually be less against them if people played them like that. But generally it's less "salt the lands, poison the well, and make everyone hate each other" and more "lol I rape the baker's daughter and then murder everyone else in town."

My only real issue with the antipaladin is the loss of self healing. I know all of his abilities are suppose to be the opposite of a paladin but to not be able to heal oneself (lay on hands) weakens him. As for paladins of different alignments I have told my players they can play a paladin of a different alignment but they have to be a champion of a deity of that alignment. I felt all gods should be able to have holy champions, so the paladin can have their alignment but instead of the normal code of conduct it is replaced by their deity's dogma. Instead of being champions for LG or CE, they are champions for their deity's beliefs. Then depending on their deity, I will make minor alterations to their abilities to match their deity.
