Raising Baby Animals

Rules Questions

I'm currently going through a campaign as a Ranger: Sable Company Marine whose hippogriff has died(spectacularly I might add). I've bought 2 baby hippogriffs and have started rearing them. I'd rather not wait years for them to be full grown and be used as flying mounts. Are there any spells or other ways I can fast forward the aging process?

Thanks

Sounds like a job for a custom Witch hex of some kind!

Insofar as spells go, apart from the two obvious ones (limited wish and wish), I think Polymorph Any Other (into an adult version of the Hippogriff) would work, and it would be permanent as well (unless it were dispelled, which could be pretty awkward mid-flight).

If you're willing to play with fire a bit, one solution is to have the local archmage Greater Planar Bind a Bythos Aeon (Bestiary 2) and ask it to use its Aging Strike a couple of times on the (likely very terrified) baby Hippogriffs: Aging Strike advances the target one age category (so Infant -> Young, and then Young -> Adult, or whatever). The downside to this approach is that... it doesn't age it very *nicely*. Still, it's the only actual "increase by an age category" effect I can think of off hand (and only because I'm prepping a guide to Planar Binding!)

Is this a home-brew campaign? I'm assuming your ranger has stacked ranks in "handle animal" if he is raising hippogriffs.

My ranger raised his hippogriff from the egg and trained it as it grew. It took a long time. This was back in 2e days so the GM sort of handled it how he wanted.

In terms of RAW I don't know of any way to accelerate the aging and/or growth of creatures. Can't you buy a trained hippogriff in the meantime? Perhaps you can reduce the cost of a grown hippogriff by trading in your two baby ones. Or maybe just one.

You could see if your GM will allow you to use a permanency on Sands of Time

Wait, didn't I see some post about some demi-planes having different time-scales than the prime material? Perhaps you could have a wizardy friend create a suitable demi-plane and hire someone to go there and train them for you.

Wish might work. The issue is you need growth & training, not aging. Simply magically aging a hatchling would give you Progeria-like results.

This is a Skull and Shackles campaign using only official Pathfinder content (DM doesn't allow 3rd party content). I do have Handle Animal maxed out and get additional bonuses for handling my companions so the training part should be easy.

I would like to get a grown one but that presents a few problems. First, they're 5,000gp each rather than 200gp for newborns. Second, they're considered magical if full grown which is harder to train. Since I'm a pirate, having two for cheap and selling their offspring later is very appealing. :)

My mistake. As you mentioned, I need the hatchlings to grow rapidly, not age rapidly.

I like the aging idea. But, I checked these two effects and they work the same way which is to penalize those that are hit (getting the downsides of aging but not the upsides). I doubt the DM would give me a favorable outcome using such effects. Summoning a large time cop to smack my baby hippogriffs into adulthood sounds hilarious though. :)

Polymorph Any Object would definitely work. Our party can't cast this (mostly level 9s) so I'm off to see a wizard!

Thanks for all the ideas guys!

I don't understand. Hippogriff are animal companion, and the only one, for Sable Ranger archetype. So they follow the normal rules of animal companion.

from Sable Company Marine:
This ability works identically to hunter's bond when used to gain an animal companion, but can only be used to gain a hippogriff companion.

If you refer to rules Hunter Bond.
PRD Hunter Bond: "The second option is to form a close bond with an animal companion."
In this case, the animal companion is ONLY the hippogriff: no choice as standard ranger.
PRD Hunter Bond: "This ability functions like the druid animal companion ability (which is part of the Nature Bond class feature),..."
See here
So when you look inside Druid Nature Bond:
PRD nature bond: "If a druid releases her companion from service, she may gain a new one by performing a ceremony requiring 24 uninterrupted hours of prayer in the environment where the new companion typically lives. This ceremony can also replace an animal companion that has perished."
See here

A ranger which lose his animal companion may replace it with the 24h ceremony. Of course, that's not intended for ranger to make "money" with his animal companion: the animal must be released or dead... not sold. :-) It's common sense...

Of course, when the new companion arrive, the ranger must teach it the tricks as normal, and lead it as normal animal... even if his hippogriff has 3 in intelligence.

I agree with everything you've said. The only issue is my DM requires the environment where the new companion typically lives part. So since hippogriffs don't typically live in our campaign he's ruled I can't easily resurrect or find a new one.

Sure, Sable Ranger is a regional archetype of Varisia. And the Sable Company Marine is a force, an army of Korvosa.
You searched the difficulty when you took this archetype!!! ;-)

Perhaps, the easiest way would be to pay a wizard to be teleported in Varisia and the mountains (noth of Korvosa city) where hippogriff are living...
