ka - KE - sst, as if it has three syllables. We don't really have a concept for vowels in the voice of fire; what Taldan scholars call ignan. Some have said it is like the sound of a torch being quenched in water.
Though to be honest, my adopted Varisi family just call me Cousin Kisst. Everybody else just calls me Q.

I didn't. Arcadix did on the 20th; but it caught my attention because it had floated so close to the top.
Qa is something of the heart or of importance. A Kisst is a brazier or hearth. Qakisst would be heart of fire or Hearth-Heart in Taldan. However; a qua is a small fluffy creature not unlike a miniature poodle, except on fire. So I guess that Quackist would be some kind of duck billed flaming poodle. Sounds kind of freaky.
I would prefer not to be called a flaming doodle. Is that right? What would you call a poodle with a duckbill in Taldan? I've probably caused more harm than good; but it wouldn't be the first time.

My character is a sorcerer/oracle; and the flaming poodle conversation came up because our party paladin couldn't pronounce Qakisst. I had thought about taking Eldritch Heritage to gain a familiar but didn't want to go through the long drawn out process to get Eldritch Heritage and Improved Familiar at the same time just to get a small fire elemental as my familiar. Having a flaming doodle as my familiar however, would have been brilliant.
You have my most heart felt approval to summon a flaming doodle as your animal friend.

You have my most heart felt approval to summon a flaming doodle as your animal friend.
i'm working on it now:) i should have it done by thanksgiving:)
i can either send it as a PM or post it on the boards (or both if anyone else wants it)
this is fun the last monster i was successful at making was a giant frog zombie, inspired by the very very many dead frogs i'd have to fish out of the ponds i cleaned in the spring. i very much regret telling my boss i was interested in learning fountains in february, should've saved it for May, after the fountains were already cleaned out:-P
oh well live and learn i s'pose:-P

So what does it say that the man who uses the internet handle "Tangent" ends up tangenting a tangented thread to get it back on topic? ;)
Amusingly enough, I actually considered Magnimar to be UNDER-populated. I use as comparison London, England from a couple hundred years back. The slums especially would have entire families living in single rooms because they can't afford anything else... and thus the Shades could very well have one building with over 40 people living in it easily.
Nor was I the only one who thought that - one of my players, Steve, was dumbfounded at the small population of Magnimar, especially given that a simple "town" was two days travel away.
Given Magnimar is a port city, they likely get the majority of their food through fishing. So they don't have the population constraint of insufficient farmland in the surrounding area - especially as there is a lot of trade coming into Magnimar as well, suggesting the city probably can import food that it doesn't get through fishing and the like.
So why such a low population for a large city?

For the record, using a rough baseline of 1 building per 5 residents works for both the middle ages and for today.
In the middle ages a shop was likely the residence of the owner. There won't be too many buildings that are not "lived in".
Nowadays there are a lot more buildings that will have nobody actually living in them. But this is mitigated by the fact that multi-units residences (i.e. apartment buildings and condos) have a lot more residents than their medieval equivalents.
As such, Sandpoint does appear to be about the population it seems to say it is.
Magnimar, on the other hand, has WAY more buildings than necessary. I tried counting them and gave up - there were too many. If anyone ever does a count though I'd love to know how many there are.

I think Irnk has it right. Magnimar really is young and more cosmopolitan than most cities so it likely has a lower population per building. I have not attempted to count buildings on the mad though.
Duck Billed Igna-poodle seems a bit long. Maybe Duck Billed Ignoodle. Nah, still too long. Maybe Ignan Platypoodle, since it would look about like a fluffy platypus on fire.
We should probably start a separate thread for interesting animal ideas. Then people can get back to not arguing about the size of Sandpoint. :p Still no idea why this thread was necroed; but it has been fun this week.
