A Charter subscriber is someone who signed up to the AP line right at the beginning, before the AP issues that compensated for the end of the Dungeon and Dragon magazine subscriptions finished if I recall the cutoff point accurately. Cancelling the subscription then restarting it loses the Charter status.

A Charter subscriber is someone who had a Dungeon/Dragon subscription when Paizo stopped publishing, transferred from there to being an AP subscriber, and have continued until now.

What he said...I was about to cancel my Dragon sub way back then, and suddenly I get this email/letter about Paizo no longer publishing Dragon or Dungeon, but they had this new series they were self publishing. On a whim I thought "Sure, why not..." and kept my sub.
Glad I did!

I may be different, in that I had no subscription to Dungeon or Dragon - I just came across this hard-back book with a big adventure in it (Shackled City I think :-)) and thought - wow, these guys are cool.
I went on the website and subscribed, starting with an adventure called "Burnt Offerings" - after all, it looks cool, and if I didn't like it, I could always cancel the sub...
4-5 years later, I am still here, buying FAR too much stuff for my wallet's health!!
I think there are less and less of us "Charter Subscribers" these days - I remember hearing from the boards here that approx 4-5 months ago, we were down to about 1,100 or so? Either way, the board title is a nice little tribute that give me a little glowy feeling of warmth ehheheheh Of course, if Paizo wants to hand out other freebies to the loyal-1000, please feel free (other than continuing to provide some really good adventures, of course!) :-)

It is a shorthand for the products you are subscribing to:
For Pathfinder Superscriber (and the fun gray border) you need:
- Pathfinder Adventure Path
- Pathfinder Campaign Setting
- Pathfinder Player Companion
- Pathfinder Modules
- Pathfinder Roleplaying Game
- Pathfinder Tales
- Pathfinder Pawns
Basically - everything with Pathfinder in the title.
For the Paizo Superscriber (and the nifty purple border) you need (i think)
- Gamemastery Cards
- Gamemastery Maps
(not sure on the second one)
Additionally you can also get a Comics Subscriber, Deluxe Comics Subscriber, and Battles Case Subscriber.
I *think* that is everything.

As a Charter Subscriber, I'm proud to say that I've enjoyed the ride through Paizo's growing pains! I've never been disappointed by my monthly shipment. Good stuff all around. If I had to do it all again, I would in a heartbeat!
On the other hand, as a wife of a Charter Subscriber, my wife believes I've joined some kind of cult...

Hey LOOK I am a Superscriber :D
It doesn't include the pawns (or the RPG too I guess), and I have enough plastic minis so they are not worth it to me. And I fancied trying the PF Tales, the one I have read was excellent, so just added that to my subs.
Or I have joined Larry's cult, best not to tell my wife ;-)

I don't think it is fair that people like Dragnmoon, who obviously own a store (we've seen the pics), get the purple edges... ;-)
You don't have to have a store. But it feels like it sometimes :)
(part of my dining room. office is similar 'cept it's all RPGs and minis)

Thank you random thread.
The purple border just showed up one day and I actually thought it was a "low poster" indicator or something.
Good to know it is just an indicator of my OCD. Everything must remain complete and up to date.

Not true, I never had a Dungeon or Dragon subscription. To be a charter subscriber you just had to buy an AP subscription before the first AP issue (Rise of the Runelords 1 Burnt Offerings) was published.
edit- wow didn't realize this was such an old thread before I posted.

And now for a totally unscientific, baseless observation: about a year later, of the 16 identifiable Charter Subscribers in this thread, one is no longer.
So, based on Gorbacz's comment and using Fermi estimation (yeah, I'm an XKCD fan :), one could guess there's now roughly 15/16*1000 = 938 Charter Subscribers.
I'm always curious about such things :)

Interesting.

Wow....talk about thread necromancy...
Anyhoo, yeah, I dropped my AP sub due to increasing lack of time to play, and I didn't see the need to carry on, difficult decision that it was.
I still have all my original books, arranged safely on a shelf. Haven't taken to step toward zip-locking them up yet...but I wonder now if maybe it's time.....

Nice. This question has popped up a few times already, if memory serves. I remember (dimly, due to advanced age) posting about getting a sub for Dungeon mag and Dragon mag to Europe, which was not an easy task, but paizo solved it admirably. The one big hiccup near the end of the mags was due to some trouble with the UK-located retailer, if memory serves, but even that was solved very well, as were any customer service related troubles I ever had (which were not that many), perhaps half a dozen or so. My first order was a Europe sub for both mags, nearly 9 years back now. Well, I´m getting old.

If Dragnmoon owns a store, he has never told me so. Which one, Dragnmoon? And why is that not on your tag instead of the subscriber info? My subs don't show up...

Heheh
Well, certainly interesting for me. I'm sure you can just do a query and get the actual number, so it might be less interesting for you :)
Edit: I bought a store (sort of) on eBay once. Once.

Randomly checked the Thread, and noticed I was mentioned...
I don't own a Store I think he was joking because I have posted Pics of the 1000's of RPG Books I do own.

Me too. Poor souls at Paizo having to live without the mystery.
