The Bone-Conjurer: a necromancy-oriented Summoner archetype

Homebrew and House Rules

Silver Crusade

Written for a player in our game who wished to have an undead pet that could actually be enhanced without needing to enslave the body of a stronger monster.

Here is the Bone-Conjurer in a google document, hope you'll like it !

I really like how you avoided the trap of making it undead type, as far as i can tell, which causes all sorts of issues. For one, you can still lose it when going unconscious, which was a major balance factor of the eidolon.

(Aaarrrgh! Hating these google docs on my smartphone.)

As an undead-themed archetype enthusiast, I applaud! From what little I could gather from the first page it looks mechanically elegant and the tweak to summon monster is cool. I will look at it further when at a computer.

Well, having like most of your archtypes in the past, I'll be sure to give this a good look when I have more time.

Oh man, this is awesome.

I now have a new villain! And maybe if I can convince *some* players in my game to stop playing Paladins a new character!

Some people really... xD

I really like the flavor of having a good aligned Bone Conjurer who animates criminals and forces them to repent though. I'll have to make a chart for my game to determine how many "deeds" one zombie/skeleton might have to repent though!

I'm sorry I can't determine the power level though, I've never been very good at that, but for flavor and character this archetype is a solid 10. I'm loving it!

I'm glad you guys like it. I think the player (also the DM) will be pleased, especially since it naturally blends well with the Spider Summoner feat.
Since the bone-conjurer lacks the sheer spellcasting power and versatility of a wizard and the undead healing/versatility of a cleric, it is best used as a support/tanking/adaptative class for players that want iconic powers and a scary pet without overshadowing the group.

I'm curious though, when the Bone Conjurer gives up Summon Monster II, III, VI, and VIII do you have them "skip" that level. So a summoner would get I, IV, V, VII, and IX? Or do they "wait" a level and max out at Summon Monster V? So you have Summon monster I until you would get Summon Monster IV and then you go to Summon Monster II?

Doing it either way shouldn't hurt the balance ; and maxing SM to V when you could cast Gate instead at this level makes no sense. You may keep the full normal progression where you wait and leap straight to upper summoning spells.

Just keep in mind that you cannot summon a creature with this ability when your eidolon is summoned, while you may animate and control undead instead to have a few HD handy even with your eidolon currently summoned. You basically trade summoning versatility during your carreer for some undead love, and since you will spend more uses of your SLA than any other summoner for some other effects, it shouldn't be an issue. :)
