@Ryan- recommend ensuring your customers have an alternative to paying $80/month for a smartphone they would otherwise have absolutely no use for.

A keyfob authenticator option at +/- $20 cost is far more acceptible than $80*12=$960/ann.

@DLH Generally when they use authenticators in most MMO's it's not a requirement as much as an additional *optional* layer of security.

And they usually have a physical token alternative that you can lose behind the couch. :)

@Dakcenturi, I believe Ryan is intending to require their use.

They better not be able to break while customer support have no way to do anything about it. :)

If you can receive email, you'll be able to use your authenticator.

There are a couple of other techniques available, too, such as having an email sent to a predefined address, or having an SMS text message sent to a predefined mobile device.

This made me smile :)

It's called multi-factor authentication. Of course, there has to be some method for replacing/recovering whatever other factor is used as authentication when the user inevitably loses it or it breaks, which opens up an avenue for the hackers to exploit it and around we go.

I think we are eventualy going to end up back in the place where the banks/notaries are in the business of confirming ID's by having you physicaly drag you arse into thier offices, smile for the camera and put your thumb on thier thumb-reader to issue you a device you can recieve messages on to act as a sort of digital multi-factor ID for more secure online identification, but we're not quite there yet.

Nothing's quite as good as substitute for good old physical presence somewhere for confirming who a person is.

They are expecting to use Google authenticator(which gets good reviews btw). Google authenticator does not use email, but does have an optional system that can use a text message or voice call.

Email authentication is still only one-factor (something that can be written down on a sticky note), but it is a more robust one-factor.

Two-factor authentication is typically something you can write down AND an object that you have.

It took me a bit of time to make my way through this thread to find out information about authenticators, and it's still a little hazy for me. At first, people were talking about something that sends an E-mail to you that might have some kind of delay. Now it sounds like the only way to log in is through having a smart phone or a phone that can receive texts.

I realize that this is all very far in the future, but is there any way to get a solid yes/no answer on whether or not one would need to be an avid cell phone user to play this game? All I have is a landline and a tracfone that I use for emergencies, and each text to my tracfone costs me prepaid units. I'm assuming at this point that my first generation iPod Touch is too old to download the authenticator app, since Apple stopped supporting it a while ago.

I'm sorry if I'm asking for information that was clearly stated at some point. I just want to make sure I'm not spending money on a game I won't actually be able to play.

I believe you'd be looking at a need to call Goblinworks and find a way for them to disable the need for two-factor authentication on your account, Soxrobin.

That is, IF they actually do require you to have an external device to authenticate your account. I'm under the impression that authentication procedures are not yet set in stone - you may very well be able to simply opt out of the secondary authentication with a warning about how it will make your account less secure and Goblinworks cannot guarantee anything etc. etc.

I think the answer comes down to "Nobody really quite knows yet."

- Though, I could be wrong.

I played MMOs for over 10 years and I had never had my account hacked.

I don't need an authenticator beyond my e-mail and my password.

And I guess I am not the exception but rather the rule so I can't imagine GoWo forcing their whole community to work themselves through lengthy and complicated authentication processes because a few people can't abide some extremely basic rules.

I'm completely with you, Sox. This is one of the most annoying questions I have at the moment. I am very resistent to spending over $900 bucks a year for a smartphone just for account verification on an ostensibly free to play game just because I am atypical.

I also feel a bit resentful at being dismissed as if insignificant just because 99% of MMO players cannot live without a slab of plastic grafted into their ear.

If you graft the phone into your ear, it will be really awkward to use the authenticator app. ;)

I know, right? And then to drive to the bank like that... what if I have a stick shift?

I came into this kinda late. Reason probably being, I was a die hard 3.5 fan who was reluctant to change systems. I finally decided to give it a shot about a year ago and I loved it so much that I haven't played another tabletop game since. I currently run 2 games at my house (RotR and WotR) and recently got into my first ever pbp game.

Since my discovery of PF I've purchased about 15 Paizo hardcovers, every pawn set, 4 Battles cases, and I'm an AP subscriber. I devote most of my spare time to games. My books, mini's, and terrain take up several closets and shelves throughout my house. Although I've only been playing Pathfinder for a year, I think the reason is understandable. With my devotion to similar games before, I consider the transfer of it to PF to make me a pretty big fan.

I've tried several mmo's and played DDO extensively. I've always thought mmo's should pretty much he the ultimate experience, but they often seem to fall short. When I heard about PFO a few months ago I was excited, but as I make my way through 2 and a half years of blogs and I read what your doing with the game, I realize that your making the game that I've always wanted. This game will be what all other mmo's should have been. At this point I couldn't be happier as I count down to early enrollment.

Now, I'm sorry if I've bored you with my history, but I wanted it to be clear that I'm certainly an involved gamer and I both understand and value standards that will ensure a long, healthy life for a game, especially one this deserving. That said, I don't understand the necessity for some of the rules on the "bad names". I find it strange that I wouldn't be able to name my monk Pai Mei when its never been a problem in any other game. In fact, as long as its not Goblin Works doing it themselves, I was unaware it was even copyright infringement, let alone that GW themselves would be liable.

More importantly though is the "seven words". I find the strictness here to be ridiculous. Sure there should be a line, but we're adults, we should be expected to shrug off a certain amount of foolishness. No racial, gender, sexual, or religious slurs is a given, as well as no threatening, but if I can't jokingly refer to a female paladin as Joan of Arc or swear I'll get vengeance by peeing in someones armor without fear of being booted from a game I've invested so heavily in, I don't know if I even want to bother. I'm sure there are countless others that feel the same way. Telling fart jokes and etc should not be punishable in way.

I hope you guys decide to lighten up on this policy before launch. There should certainly be standards in place, but they should be made to protect, not censor individual taste.

This game is intended to be PG-13, not adults only.

And having a character named Roger Ramjet or Tricky Dick is immersion breaking. Or bathroom words in major languages.

I suspect that 'reasonable' names will be OK if not already taken. If your name is taken away, and you bring the case here, I suspect you will not find champions for your pun or ….

I wonder your desire to use inappropriate names is not very adult.

How is that you judge a game by not being able to use inappropriate names or immersions breaking names. Are you that limited? Can you not imagine fantasy appropriate names?

Goblin Squad Member

As far as I know Pai Mei would only be an issue because it's the name of a 'famous' monk. I didn't even know this until I read this thread and looked it up as I've used the name before because I made it up and it sounded cool. I had no clue it was an actual name.

Too early to be definitive, but my guess is we'll use Google Authenticator, so it will be useable anywhere you can use Google authenticator.

Smartphones seem the most likely place for that to happen, and the venn diagram of people who play MMOs and people who have smartphones overlaps at the 99% percentile, so I don't see that being a handicap.

Hey guys, I'm bringing this thread out of retirement to pimp my latest Crowdforging IdeaSmartphone & App Integration.

Ryan, your statement about this from early days shows you all have the will to make this a reality, and I'd like to let you know it's one worth developing.

Upvote if you agree.

Fallen Earth was one of the first games to come out with an app tied into an MMO. Maybe Lee has some insight into that since he worked on Fallen Earth as well.

If any of that isn't covered by NDA I'd be very interested to hear what Lee has to say about that experience.
