Ok, so they aren't building the thing yet, but this kickstarter is for doing reasearch needed for a feasibility study on building an ELEVATOR TO SPACE.

Pretty damned cool.

They are asking for funding for scientific research but will be neither offering a return on investment (as I would expect from a business), nor to put their research into the public domain (as I would expect from a charity or Non-profit).

Either if they either offered a return for eventual profits OR put their research into the public domain, I would be allllll kinds of all over this.

Per kickstarter's TOS they cannot offer a share in their profits.

As it stands, they are selling you a product at all of their backer levels in order to fund a project they have the expertise to do. I'm not sure how I feel about all of the rewards, but you are not donating to the project without compensation at any level (except perhaps the school project ones).

I agree with you about the public domain though. I would put a lot more money forth if it did enter the public domain.

Sorry, I wasn't impying that they could.

I honestly don't think that this is technology that should be owned. But if it is going to be, I certainly don't want to be donating funds without receiving some share of profit.

Far better that this be a charitable effort, or transnational endeavour, like CERN.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I agree entirely. But with public funding in research being gutted, I would rather see a company developing these technologies and gathering the data than no one doing anything.
