And, it looks like, the robot costume Fake Healer was hoping for.

It's The Mechanist from Fallout 3.

I wonder what special abilities it will have...

This is coming out the day I have a dental procedure - possible root canal (ouch!) - but I have the next day off, so I'll have something fun to do while I'm home.

At least you can put a sharp pointy bit on it, as compared to the Troubleshooter's Lead Pipe I have. ;)

My guess for the DLC is March 20, and that Survival Mode will either come out at the same time, or when the GECK does in April.

And hey, I wasn't too far off on the release date for Automatron. :)

So how come we can't get bows and thrown weapons in Fallout like we do in Skyrim? Is that something that could be done with a mod, or is that too ambitious?

There are crossbow mods out there, just search the Nexus.

And you've got molotovs and grenades as thrown weapons. But I know what you mean - no spears or throwing knives or shuriken.

I'd like a Needler from Fallout 2. The Syringer Rifle doesn't quite satisfy me the same way.

Soon, perhaps, with the Creation Kit coming.

I think the tire iron can be turned into an axe but I am unsure about the lead pipe, never had a reason to get too involved in beating someone with a pipe in the game....

BTW, Troubleshooter's switchblade.....that's what I got from a recent Legendary super mutant.....le sigh....

Lead Pipe can be made Heavy, doing more limb damage and chance to cripple.

Still, some of these legendary drops can be so absurd at times, but it's not like they're that rare.

I find Explosive and Wounding the best so far, followed by Crippling (on the right weapon).

Strangely, robots will lose health over time due to Wounding, even though they don't bleed per se. (Maybe they leak oil or coolant?)

I don't necessarily agree with the following sentiment, but I think they perhaps want to focus on contemporary and sci-fi weapons coupled with a few makeshift things for a post-apocalyptic feel. So they avoid weapons commonly associated with "fantasy" for the most part. Perhaps they're afraid they'd be accused of pulling too much stuff from the Elder Scrolls.

Personally, especially since in a post-apoc world you could have looted such things, I would like to see contemporary hunting bows, like compound bows, and throwing knives, etc. Yes, since they have the mechanics already worked out in their engine, it otherwise seems odd they wouldn't use them.

They HAD spears and some other tribal weapons in Fallout New Vegas, too. (They seem weirdly avoidant of using items developed for FNV).

My other complaint is not enabling two-weapon melee or unarmed combat, given that is also a possibility in their engine. (I liked my two-swords fighting character in Skyrim).

Yeah - why are boxing gloves only one glove? Why are unarmed weapons only on one fist? Seems a bit silly.

On that line, I was roaming around with Cait from the Combat Zone as my companion the other day and she straight up grabbed some raider dude and did what looked like a bodyslam....picked him up and tossed him on the ground on his back. I was surprised as I had never seen her do that before, especially since I usually see her hacking dudes with the machete I gave her. Is this a thing that people have seen? I am wondering if any other companions do stuff like this.

@ Fake Healer: Yes - you can do a slam as an unarmed power attack. Cait does it, but so will Curie if she's not armed with a melee or ranged weapon.

I hate that the BASH/POWER ATTACK/GRENADE are all the same key on the Xbox! So many times I've accidentally bashed when I was trying to toss out a mine or grenade, or thrown a molotov when I was trying to power attack.

The tire iron can be made into an axe. The lead pipe you can fill with cement and duct tape a couple of gears to it.

The switchblade now ... ouch.

Of course, if you've decent melee capability, Trudy @ Drumlin's Diner sells General Chao's Revenge. At least there's a good anti-robot melee weapon available, albeit not cheaply.

I seem to keep getting legendary weapon combinations that really suck. I got one of the VATS assisting weapons and it was a tire iron....for my long-range sniper build. I wish you could disassemble them an put the legendary component on something else....seems like that should be something you could do.

This is probably the only gameplay mod I'd want.

There are mods out there that allow you to do exactly that. (Any Mod, Any Weapon is one I've seen.)

Whether that's totally broken or not, I don't know.

Everyone would be making their own Explosive minigun, for example. But since such weapons can be found in game, I guess it's not cheating.

You'd want to make them even rarer, though, if they had unlimited application. As it is, the effects are not that rare. It's having them show up on a piece I want that's the problem.

Exactly, I usually can't bring myself to sell them so I end up the "The cabinet of misfit legendary weapons" in my base in almost every game so far....The only really good Legendary I have gotten and felt was good enough to replace my standard use weapons besides Deliverer was an Irradiated Rifle, not a combat rifle mind you but a regular rifle. It was good enough that I felt that having a 50 cal sniper rifle out of it was better than my standard maxed out combat rifle....but it was a tough choice for me even then.

Borderlands had a nice feature where you could put, iirc, up to 5 weapons in a special locker that was accessible to any of the characters on your game. That way, if I came across a really great weapon for another one of my builds but not the one who found it, I could transfer it to that other character.

I've never found an exploding weapon in Fallout 4, with over 100 hours in.

You can buy Spray & Pray, which is an explosive, silenced submachine gun, and one of the most OP named weapons in the game.

I've found 3 explosive legendary weapons so far, one a combat shotgun (which is also rather OP). One a minigun, but I deleted that character because I didn't like the build. The last a simple pipe pistol, but I modded it up to automatic and that was also fairly powerful!

The shot gun dropped off a legendary alpha mongrel, of all things. I thought I'd need to defeat a legendary death claw before I'd get a find like that!

MeanDM wrote:

Yeah, I've got more hours and the only one I've found is Spray and Pray, which is good but didn't really fit the build I was going for....oh well, gotta just keep grinding I guess...

I have found a few. It is the luck of the draw. But my exploding Assault Rifle was VERY nice.

It's the combination of difficulty level, character level, critter level, "encounter band" (the color-coded one where the redder the area, the higher the 'default level' of everything is) and probably a smidge of one's Luck stat that seems to influence whether or not a legendary item drops and if so, what the base and legendary effects are.

It is also pretty clear that certain Legendaries are far, far more common than others. In short, the nicer it is, the rarer it is. Pretty crappy ones crop up more often and on crappier items than the nice ones do, especially on higher cap valued base items. The super nasty stuff (Instigator's, Sentinel's/Titan's, etc) only drop 1 in 100 or less (unless you're willing to quick save/quick load to game the system so that you can get on with playing the game). The crummy/meh stuff is much more common as far as I can tell.

On my quick-n-dirty BoS ending playthrough, I used Scrounger and most of my caps to accumulate 4k rounds of .45 ammo for Spray-n-Pray before heading into the final leg of that version of the main quest. I used every round in the doing, and that was on Normal.

It is definitely random with some influences from other factors. I've found a delectable pipe auto with the Explosive legendary. Fit that puppy with a 48 round drum and the best auto receiver you can manage, then go to town.

~laughter~ I was over at the Nexus Mod site reading in their forums when I came across this by The Vampire Dante.

Location: Glow Sea.

Weather: Radstorm.

Mission: Checking on Virgil.

Incident:

Get 2/3 of the way there, run into swarm of black bloatflys - set down a plasma grenade and lure them over it. Grenade does the job, but also draws attention of an Albino Deathclaw. Start to combat it before it gets in close, part way through the fight another Deathclaw shows up since we've moved during combat.

Legendary Mythic - and it starts to charge down towards me, gets closer than the Albino, and then stops and turns.

Puzzled, I hold off on attacking for a split second - only to see the second Deathclaw start to lay waste to the first one, which I can only assume struck it in passing. I back off and crouch behind cover to watch the outcome. Both tear at each other for ages until one falls and turns to search for me, only to be brought down by a newly arrived Radscorpion hunter, which then dies at the hands of a grenade and a few shots from my rifle.

Continue on my way, meet Virgil and conclude our business - start to head back out and decide to visit the Children of Atom settlement before I go. Get there and and everyone fighting off another Deathclaw (Chameleon) and pack of bloodbugs.

Change my mind and leave - minute later the Deathclaw runs past me being chased by the bloodbugs and a single Atom fanatic with a gamma gun.

Settler kills the bugs and the Deathclaw, then goes home.

I go home to Outpost Zimonja and up the defenses a bit, it's crazy out there.

~laughter~ Another one by The Vampire Dante.

Decided to annoy the hell out of a firebombing raider - he got himself cornered and just kept throwing molotovs at me - so I went pigeon shooting and shot each bottle as he let it fly.

14 bottle later and he pulls a grenade, throws it, hits a post and ends up with it back at his feet. He jumps out and starts running, grenade goes off and he ragdolls off the road into the water nearby (yelling "oh s&@@" and "you'll pay for that!" to himself), climbs out and gets killed by a mirelurk hiding in the mud.

Killed the lurk, searched the raider. He had a spoon, can of cram, a teddy bear, three caps, a pipe rifle - and a missile launcher with enough munitions to fend off every mutant in Trinity Plaza.

Still confused as to why he didn't just draw that thing first.

Made it two streets away and got to witness a group of supermutants fighting with some ferals (and definitely winning) when one of them decides to pull the plug and nukes the entire group. One Ghoul survives, looks at me for a moment, hisses and then just hobbles away like it can't be bothered.

Told you those bloodbugs are nasty. ;)

~laughter~ Yes you did.

Bloodbugs and bloatfly are about the only things I immediately use VATS for.

~sighs~ No fast travel and only saving at a bed is rough at times.

Yeah. "Iron Man" mode (no Saves aside from specific Save points) sucked on other strategy games. It is only for those who were willing to lose a couple of hours of play if they got killed. If you've got nothing but free time and don't mind doing the same section over again, I guess it's fine. But for the rest of us, not so great.
