Ranged touch attacks with fireball or lightning bolt against flying enemies?

Advice

Silver Crusade

Was playing the other day when we encountered some flying enemies. I wanted to do a fireball on one of them. My GM said go ahead, but I said it would make more sense if I had to make a ranged touch attack against them since they were flying. What do you all think? Ranged touch attack or automatic hit vs. flying enemies with fireball?

Fireball is an AOE and no attack roll is needed. If you can see them you can hit them as long as they are in range.

That is what the reflex save is for.

Adding a ranged touch attack makes no sense, has no purpose, and is an unwarranted nerf.

You're not trying to hit them; you're trying to hit a point in space, and it can't duck because it's an abstract. Whatever distance and height you want is what you'll get, unless the bead hits something in-between you and that point. Then this great big ball of fire appears, 40 feet across, and anyone caught inside can try to avoid the worst of it with a Reflex save.

Hmmmmm....Alright, I suppose that's better anyway. Thanks for the advice.
