Okay I've got a million questions.

What kind of siege engines do y'all have?

We have several siege engines; including a heavy balista on a rotating point, as well as a cannon.

Better rules for Siege Engines can be found Here.

Variel - correct me if I'm wrong here - I'm not sure if I can remember our full compliment of Siege Guns, or their position on the ship at this point...

Javell DeLeon wrote:

Can they be fired by 1 person? If not, then how many people would it take to fire it?

And are there that many folks on this ship able to fire it?(I think I read somewhere it takes like 4 people to reload? Please correct me if I'm wrong).

It does take 2 to load it; but I have a trained gun crew. So basically it takes a Full Round Action to Aim/Fire and it takes 3 Full Round Actions to reload it.

In this case it would mean that Horatio would take the round to Aim it - then fire it; then have the Gun Crew spend 3 Full Round actions to reload it while he operates the Ballista...

Javell DeLeon wrote:
I know pretty much nothing about siege engines so that's why I ask. I've never used them.

The link above should have a lot of information that could be helpful.

That said; Horatio is partially torn between winning the race and possibly rescuing the people in the water.

But he can't formally act until the end of the round, so for now he has to wait...

Thanks for the clarifications.

Would this also be the same: Siege weapons?

Now if you click on that link, you'll see Cannon and Heavy Ballista listed in the top three.

Is this what you all have?

A trained gun crew? That's cool. Is it the minimum of 3? Or do you have more? Do you actually have a crew to operate both siege weapons at the same time or just enough to operate only 1 at a time?

Also, do y'all have any kind of "special" type of ammo for these weapons? Or is it simply your typical ammo?

And is there a limit to how much ammo you have for both weapons?

Sorry about all the questions.

Follow the link in my header to the loot list. It will also have the link to The Dread Lady that will give you the information you are looking for on types of siege engines and ammunition.

We have 8 lt ballistae and 2 cannons. The ammunition is also listed there as a total, not per ballistae or cannon. the ballistae are on the port and starboard sides of the ship while the cannons are fore and aft. Its possible to then to get 2 cannon and 4 ballistae to fire at the Dragon Turtle is it lines up for a broadside.

So if I'm reading this right, y'all have enough teams to fire the 2 cannons and 4 ballista currently, correct? If you wanted to just for kicks and grins, you couldn't actually fire all of them at once due to a lack of teams, right? I just wanna make sure I'm clear on the total number of teams y'all have.

Also, it looks like 1 of your ballista was destroyed? Would you have 9 if it was repaired? Or has it completely been obliterated?

Wow! I just noticed it says "48/120" passengers. That's cool. Wait, that's not "Crew" though, is it.

The spreadsheet says: "Crew 20, Current 33". What does that mean exactly?

And who are the passengers?

In this case the crew required to sail the ship is 20 - but we actually have 33 members.

This means that - if someone dies - we would still have enough to sail the ship - but it also means we can sail the ship at ease and have lads to man the weapons effectively.

The ship also gives us some boats to dispatch to help the drowning people, but I think the issue is that if we did send boats to help them then a dragon turtle would likely still destroy the boats with as much ease as it destroyed the ship.

The only way we might be able to aid them effectively (I think) is if we were willing to fight and (hopefully) destroy the dragon turtle.

Horatio would support that cause, but for now I'm going to see what the others have to say about it.

Okay - got to go to work; but I'll post again when I have a chance :)

Oooooooh, okay. Gotcha on the crew. Thanks!

And thanks for the link, Variel!

Yeah the Dragon turtle is gonna have to be dealt with for sure. We'd just get ourselves killed going in there on boats.

This is only important as some of our abilities/spells are limited to Minutes and Rounds and knowing how many rounds have passed could be very useful.

Basically every time I post a distance that's one round. You went 300 feet in one round. so you will have about 2 more rounds until you are within range to do stuff.

GM: First, I'm sorry I didn't post yesterday. I had a seizure and it hurt me pretty bad; I could write stuff, but creative writing was a little too much for me yesterday.

Second, I couldn't really post much yesterday because after you gave us the rounds, I responded with some questions and you didn't answer them. If I don't have answers to the questions, I don't know what else I can do.

Third, you indicated that we have 2 rounds until we are able to do something because we are 700 feet away, however - cannon have a range increment of 100 feet, shouldn't that mean they can be fired when we're 400 feet out, though with penalty? Or did you mean we're literally 700 feet from being able to use ranged weapons?

Okay - that's pretty much it. I apologize for not doing better RP with the other players, but I'm still kind of struggling right now. See you all tonight!

I don't believe he has summoned them yet.

GM - we're all prepped and readied with actions.

Dhaavan is prepared to cast, so is Variel.

Horatio is prepared to shoot.

Amen-set is prepared to cast/guide the Air Elementals to help direct survivors into the boats.

Rajah is going to shoot the cannon when we get into range.

Adular is obviously going to use "Call Lightning" when we get into range, because not only does he have it memorized, but I'm willing to bet the Turtle won't like Lightning...

And I'm not sure, but I'm assuming Jiro use his dimensional door thing to warp in, grab survivors, then warp back to the ship?

Of course, that won't happen until we get into range...

That said - we're all ready to go; we just need to get closer to the creature; as in - roughly 100 feet?

As soon as we see the go-ahead from you, we should be good to go :)

A natural 20! Man that was a freaking awesome roll! I just wish I could've rolled better on the confirm.

I gotta say, that's some pretty good damage on those rolls. Fairly decent on rolling average and above on them. That's typically not me. Well, the 4 on the confirm to hit is. :P

Rajah: Actually, you did do pretty epic... nicely done :)

GM: So at this point we haven't heard from some of the players and it's been more than 24 hours.

Meantime, because I'm working a 12 hour shift between two jobs and I'm not able to post from work because I can't use computers for gaming purposes there, so it means I'd have to post before work or after work.

Anyway, knowing that I wouldn't be able to post all day, and not wanting to hold up the game in the middle of combat for more than 12 hours - I set my alarm for 4:30 AM so I could be awake early enough to read the boards, see what the players posted, and then see your reaction - and then take my own reaction before I left for work so I didn't leave the others in the lurch (technically I needed to be up at 5:15 AM but what can be done?).

However, as it stands it looks like there's not much more I can do this round, unfortunately.

That said, I'll have something up for next round later tonight, though - but I just wanted to say that I'm sorry for the delay.

Horatio Flynn wrote:

See, Adular had cast Bless earlier on at the start of the Combat a few rounds back; that means you'd have a +1 to confirm your hit, so your confirmation roll would be a 9, not an 8.

But wait - Amen-set also cast the spell on the cannon "Magic Siege Engine" - which not only grants a +1 to Damage and Magical Damage, but it also grants a +1 to hit - meaning you'd confirm on a Touch Attack of 10, not 8.

Given that the weapon is considered magical, that should mean you'd do a total of 98 damage against a Touch Attack on a 10 vs. an AC of 10.

Now the Bless I was unaware of. Thanks for the clarification on that. I remember you mentioning the "Magic Siege Engine" bit, but I believe I misunderstood on how it was suppose to work and thought it only made it to be "considered" magical and not like actually magical. Good to know.

Thanks for the head's up about your abilities!

As for being in the crow's nest? Is there an actual specific bonus that it grants you for Perception Checks - if so, what is the numeric advantage? Does it grant a +2 or a +4 or something like that? I only ask about the numeric advantage because sending familiars to scout means the party can get better Perception Check scores and abilities from longer distances from the ship typically, (unless you have a really good bonus). But if you didn't have to stay up there it could easily free you to do other things, if you'd like?

For example - in the combat The Blue Rajah aided at shooting the enemy; he did an awesome job (can't say how awesome that was, Rajah :) but the GM indicated that it was very near miss on the conversion on the Giant Turtle - so close he had to use Mythic Point to convert it.

I only mention this because if you had been shooting the cannon you wouldn't have needed to use the Mythic Point - your 22 Dexterity would have meant you would have hit the Turtle with no difficulty at all.

Also, given that the approximate height of the crows nest is - from what I can tell - roughly 50 feet from the main deck - is there any reason you need to use a spell to communicate with the rest of the people as opposed to just calling down to them, or is that just supposed to be flavor for social RP purposes?

I mean, generally I don't have much difficulty communicating with people 50 feet away (typically, people move more than 50 feet away from me if they don't want to hear me ;)

On the other hand, I guess sending private messages to specific people might be handy, of course - but if that's the case, wouldn't that just mean that the bulk of the party wouldn't have access to whatever information you were discovering?

In which case, that information would have to be relayed to all of us via Social RP, and that would mean there would need to be more posts to relay it and more posts means that people can't act until they get that information so there's kind of more delays.

I'm not trying to tell you how to play your character, but it seems like if you're in the Crow's Nest if you just called down to the entire company might mean we'd all be able to respond to what you discover, rather than precluding certain players from details.

Speaking of information via the Crow's Nest - the GM indicated that we pulled 9 survivors out of the water; but there was likely 3 dead bodies in the water - but are we sure they're dead, not floundering or just barely missed? Is it possible we're sailing away from people who need help?

Here's a better question - (Rajah, here's a bit of background before that question) - the GM said the thing was Fiendish, but Fiends aren't native to our plane - of course, we have plenty of details which suggest that there's an entire invasion planned via Cheliax invading The Shackles by using demons to back them (or devils; I'm not sure which) but now we have a Fiendish Dragon Turtle attacking us?

That can't be a coincidence - Dragon Turtles might exist in The Shackles (unlikely as that is for us to be fighting one on this level, in my humble opinion), but if there's a Fiendish one that means that it was summoned... That being the case, as sick as the CR for a Dragon Turtle is to me, I can only imagine the CR of the Caster who summoned it - which takes me to my question: where's the Caster who summoned it?

So far we haven't seen the Caster who summoned it, but it would have to be there as Fiends aren't native to our Plane (unless it's the mysterious "Man in Black" on Harrigan's ship that summoned it)?

Speaking of which, does anyone know where Harrigan's ship is in relation to us?

Jiro - once again I'm sorry I didn't understand your abilities via the combat and I hope there are no hard feelings.

Lol!

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have ourselves a winner!

He actually began as an RL character forever ago. He was fun to play. Of course, he's much different now than he was then.

Just let me know if you run out of spoons...

No knives, maybe a pie server.

Ha! Yeah I think I'm fairly well set on spoons. A pie server on the other hand... :)

@Dain: Are you a doctor? 'Cause there's no way I could've come up with that kind of information. I guess not being a doctor would be a pretty good reason for that. :P

You also beat me to the punch. Of course, it wasn't gonna be anything as well descriptive as that, so, good on you, bud!

Nah, not a doctor; but I did enjoy the show "Scrubs" - so, I got that going for me :)

Also, to be fair; Horatio's backstory had him learns stuff as a boy at a Lumber Yard; so that was included in this part of the game thanks to his backstory - including the guy Jacobo (fun aside; there was a really cool character named Jacobo in The Count of Monte Cristo - though that's not the same guy ;)

Also, Amen-set does come from Osirion - so those texts from Egypt (which is what Osirion is based on) seem like something Horatio would have studied.

As for what he ended up doing? Well, the Surgeon's Tools are on his sheet; so that's pretty solid - and it's a MW Healers Kit (he did start off as Ship's Surgeon on Level 1); so his med kit and surgeons tools should be on point there.

As for the rest of the information? All jokes aside, I know a bit about head injuries and some basic nuances related to epilepsy, including what to do when people have it, and some nuances about people who suffered from it on the high seas.

One person in particular was a guy in a historical drama about the Napoleonic Wars who had epilepsy but was still able to serve as a Jr. Officer in the British Navy (by the way - the show was called Horatio Hornblower ;)

Also, thanks for the compliment - it made me really happy to read it :)

Cool - that said; here's hoping the narrative makes a positive difference; but I guess we'll see what the GM is going to do next!

HA! I guess that would explain it then. :)

Sure could've fooled me, that's for sure.

HA! Jacobo! That dude is awesome! Man he's so dang funny. That's exactly who I thought of when you put that name out there. Count of Monte Cristo is a fantastic movie.

And Horatio Hornblower! Another one who came to mind when I first read your name. That's awesome. My wife bought the entire DVD collection a while back. That is a great show. We haven't watched them all yet though. It's just too bad they didn't finish making the rest of the books. Cost killed it in the end. Ioan Gruffudd really wanted to continue making them but obviously never got the chance unfortunately.
