GMs with their own PC in the Campaign, Good or Bad?

Silver Crusade

It really depends on the GM. I've seen the NPC traveling with the party to be a Very Bad Thing or a Very Good Thing, depending solely on whether the GM can divorce his or her ego from the NPC's.

Example of a good run:
Our Friday night GM had a dwarf cleric NPC run through an AP with us. We were low on healers. Master Hammer's timely advice and spiritual guidance meant that the PCs began to see him as the party's father figure. (I wish that didn't have a built in pun.) He wasn't pushy, and he didn't have ultra competence or anything. Actually, he was kind of grumpy (oh, more built in puns). When he said "I think you guys should finish what you started and go after BBEG, even though it might mean we all die," we listened. Because we respected him.

Example of a bad run:
A friend ran a set of adventures in which the party was basically supposed to follow around his favorite PC while said PC had adventures. We rolled dice once in about six sessions. Otherwise, "Panther" took care of it all...except for the grunt work.

I suffer from perpetual arrested adolescence.

I think it's the reason I still play D&D.

The entire trick to enjoying life is to grow up as little as possible.

I'm 29 going on 15.

"Growing up" is just giving up the dream.

On to the topic at hand though, a GMPC can be good or bad. It's entirely dependant on the GM's abilities.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Shameful

I don't know that I'd go with shameful, but would agree on tasteless. I'm far from a prude (miles away, in fact), but I honestly don't see a need to throw stuff like this in my games. With the exception of one player (who's a complete misogynist, homophobe, and closet racist), none of my group of 40 somethings have any interest in such a thing.

During the 2e days my wife played a courtesan who was the madam of a large and famous brothel. But it was never something that was ever "roleplayed" out. It was just part of her background story. We just never felt it necessary to play up the "adventuring strumpet" aspect. I guess I've said all this to say I'll take murderous hobos over grave-robbing hookers any day.

Like I said, to each their own.

Yay murderous, grave plundering, tax dodging, largely psychotic hobos...

I dunno. I'm very partial to Inara Serra.

Yes, GM's can show unbalanced favoritism to their party character, but then they can do the same to their BBEG, their best friend's PC, or their significant other's PC.

*cringes at the memory of clerics casting spontaneously from their entire spell list*

My Serenity character, Capt. Dexter Kessel, had sex with Inarra yesterday at the Open Gaming Convention in New Hampshire.

Goblins do it in the street!

Sovereign Court

Was he a perfect gentleman?

Of course he was.

Waited for her to finish and everything.
