Looking for feedback from anyone who has actually played a Spellslinger

Advice

I'm about to enter a new campaign, at first level, and am trying to come up with a concept to work with. I like the flavour of the spellslinger but am not so convinced by the mechanics.

Can anyone who has played one tell me how they fared?

I have a spellslinger in one group im in. The character has more staying power in fights, which has been good, but loses some wizard versatillity. It's been good so far, especially as we have some very drawn out fights and long adventuring days.

Bramble, can you show us your build please?

I do not know if that is relevant to you but I have played a spellslinger, though only as a one level dip for a gunslinger. It gave a surprising amount of versatility to gunslinger with the floating weapon enhancement and is definitely worth the -1 BAB.

Spellslinger 1/Sorc 19
Spellslinger 1/Witch 19
Spellslinger 1/Magus 19

.....

All the bonus and flavor. None of the restrictions

Yeah, Spellslinger was one of those archetypes that wasn't very well thought through since you can grab the entire utility of the archetype with a one level dip. And since it doesn't specify arcane spells (other than in the name of the ability) you can technically pair this one level dip with any casting class, even druids and clerics.

That wouldn't fly in my table. I'd actually make a FIAT ruling that only wizard spells can be focused through the arcane gun, as that is the clear RAI.

I absolutely agree with you Lazar, as I had to do the same thing just recently with a player who was trying to pair it up with cleric levels.

I'm really glad I went the gun-mage route because if I were a normal mage I'd be down to throwing rocks and harsh language.

You want to nerf something that is already sub-par at best?

Oh, the previous build was 25 pt buy, and extra campaign traits.

Personally I think Spellslinger should have been built off the Magus.

For a Blasting Wizard style, which is what the Spellslinger is intended for, it's hardly sub par.

I like the spellslinger as an in route to a theurge build. Thinking of yourself as a striker rather than primary caster makes the class a lot easier to digest.

Well your welcome to houserule it all you want (personally I think its fine... Dipping is common in melee.... why is this different). It still works that way

I think most of the responses here are knee-jerk reactions. The Archetype isnt that great to begin with and a gun toating witch is just cool... I always picture him like the cover art from the Dark Tower series. He even has a crow (Familiar).

Flavour wise, I have to agree.

Yep, I want to make a Cleric with Rune Domain (gets scribe scroll), Spellslinger/Cypher Mage, Mystic Theurge.

Low BAB, but I'm wondering if it would matter with touch attacks and high weapon enhancement with the arcane gun.
