Need Advice on Creature Creation

Homebrew and House Rules

So this is the first time I am creating a creature. The creature is a bomb golem and I am having trouble getting the concept down.

The golem is a Large metal construct that can open a panel in its chest cavity to reveal a miniature alchemical lab. I thought that with this alchemical lab it could create bombs. This is where my trouble begins. I looked at the alchemist class to get some inspiration. I read that it can make a certain number of bombs per day plus the INT modifier. I look at the construct traits and I see that golems are mindless constructs. Ah.

In order to create a bomb the creature must mix volatile chemicals together. Sounds good! And then infuse them with their magical reserves to create powerful bombs that they can hurl at their enemies. Darn.

I thought maybe the creator could infuse magical reserves into the golem but I'm not sure if this is possible.

Plus I believe I read that constructs cannot have feats. Double Darn.

So is this a lost cause or is there a way around this problem?

A golem has no mind but you can easily say the golem can mix extracts and chemicals if it is simply following a recipe, yes?

It's an interesting idea at least.

Perhaps the golem has a system of tanks and pipes and hydraulics and pressure hoses INSIDE it that work like clockwork and mix a potion and can "load" it into a cannon arm or head or tiny catapault lobber. Maybe damaging it runs a risk of rupturing it and making it explode or catch fire?

It would have to be restocked occasionally with the proper chemicals. Maybe it takes a set amount of rounds before it can have another bomb ready? It can still be a construct and not specifically a golem.

Most of what you are talking about is simply flavor and effect. I don't think you should give a golem class levels like alchemist.

Just ignore your worries and write down numbers, paizo does it the same way:

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/constructs/golem/golem-al chemical

"As a standard action, an alchemical golem can throw a bomb as a ranged touch attack to a distance of 60 feet (no range increment). If the attack misses, treat it as a thrown splash weapon to determine where it lands. Anyone struck by an alchemical golem’s bomb takes 8d6 points of acid, cold, electricity, or fire damage (determine type randomly). All creatures adjacent to the location where the bomb hits take 1d6 points of energy damage of the same type."

No limitation, it can throw bombs all day and night. (but sorry to tell you, your idea is not new.)

Alright so it can mix extracts and chemicals if it follows a recipe. I like the idea of maybe a shoulder mounter catapult lobber.

The risk of rupturing it and making it explode or catch fire is a good idea. I think I saw other golems with a special in which there is a 2% chance that they can go beserk. Maybe there can be a 2% chance of the exploding.

Maybe constructing a bomb takes 1d4 rounds. Would that be too long? As for restocking chemicals maybe the construct can be found in areas where there is chemical vats present.

I was tinkering with an idea that if a construct is brought to o hp, it could start a chemical reaction and then explode. Maybe like explosive rune 6d6 damage or something.

Dang. Oh well, I'll still go through with creating it just to learn about monster creation. Thank you for the link and information :)

Had a great idea today that maybe you can use. I know I sure will.

A Glass Golem filled with toxic gas.

Can explode when reduced to 0 HP or begin leaking at toxic fumes at 1/2?

Maybe not exactly what you had in mind but might be a fun addition to your encounter, if you are making a "mad scientist" type lab woth lots of crazy golem variants.

You can go with an animated bazooka or a construct swarm of grenades.
