there is a solution if you are homegaming it. Let them take a trait.

Just like fighters have armor proficiency that gives them 1 better armor penalty and 1 more dex, there is a trait that gives you part of that and gives you one better armor penalty.

so make a homebrew trait---called trap paranoid. you had a job hunting the sewers for ratfolks and kobolds. As a result you passively detect traps at a negative 2 (or whatever) check within 10"


@Jiggy: The point was not so much the length of time a skill takes, but rather what the skill check represents. The check should represent your ability plus your success or failure on each endeavor, just as it does for each other skill.
