Cutting up a Flip-map. Good idea?

Accessories

I have the GameMastery Basic flip-mat and was wondering if it would be a good idea to cut it up to use more like my Dungeon Tiles. Has anyone done this? Does it hold up well?

I'm confused why you'd want to do this, but if you did it would probably hold up well. Why not just pick up a couple of map packs instead of cutting up a flip mat?

Before I got one, I thought about cutting it along the folds so it would always lay flat on the table, but for new flip-mats if you fold them back when you open them, they are fine. And once they've been used a few times they flatten out pretty well.

I imagine the cut edges would fray a bit since the maps are laminated. They're really just heavy paper with a durable coating on them. If you store the cut pieces carefully, you'd probably get a lot of use out of them.

It's been mentioned elsewhere, but a lot of people (myself among them) find an artist's portfolio to be handy - then the maps are always flat and tend to stay that way really well.

Plus I find it a lot easier to find the map I want, since they're all unfolded.

FWIW, I've unfolded all of my flip maps and placed them between the mattress and the box (no springs) of my bed. They're out of the way when I don't need them, and flat when I do.

If you put an iron on low and place a towel over the top of the flip mat it takes the fold lines very well.
Just go slowly and be careful.
