So how do we stop gnomes from being in Pathfinder 2.0?

Let's face it, gnomes are the least popular PC race and for good reason. Let's choose to just drop them come Pathfinder 2.0 and use a new innovative PC race that is Pathfinder exclusive. I think that would be the best solution.

No. Gnomes may be the least popular on the messageboards, but there are plenty of people in the world that play gnomes and don't post on the internet about playing gnomes.

But if you're not. I wouldn't say they are the least popular race. I like gnomes, and I usually have 1 or 2 gnomes in adventuring parties my players create.

I see halflings less often, but that's because halflings suffer from just being short humans. I like halflings, but their identity wasn't really differentiated or made iconic enough to become as popular as gnomes are (with their cool fey aspects and nifty quasi-immortality and bleaching etc).

I think it's best to offer... the mortal children... of gnomes who originally entered the Prime Material illegally... a path to Golarion citizenship. I call it the Midnight Milk-dream Act.

Gnomes are edging out halflings for second favorite race in our home games. Easiest way to get rid of them? Disallow them in your home games. I won't judge.

Seriously though how often to they actually make it into APs or the like, even as NPCs. You see veeeerrrry few. And like I said there is good reason for that mainly because they really aren't that interesting.


Think about it, elves and dwarves have their own countries, hell even orcs have a country in the Hold of Belkzen. Gnomes are just there. No cool subtypes no cool story line. Just there.

This just in... the National Internet Weather Association has issued a Godwin Advisory for this thread for the next 30 minutes.


I could see a GM banning gnomes from a more seriously-toned adventure, but I think they're a riot to play. I'd rather see half-orcs replaced by a more interesting Strength-based race (something like the Goliath or even just orcs) and the half-elf faded out (if you wanna play an elf, play an elf). But I expect those are even less-popular ideas than cutting out gnomes. That's why I just do what I want in a homebrew campaign setting.

The more curious part of the OP's post is "a new innovative PC race that is Pathfinder exclusive". I wonder what they are aiming for?

As for gnomes, they seem pretty popular in our games as well.


No way half-orcs are awesome. The whole struggling to be accepted and never really trusted role works really well with half-orcs their story works well for that. I see half-elves as almost the emo kid who just really struggles to fit in. And gnomes are the kid in the corner picking his nose with the dunce cap on.

Read gnomes of Golarion and found it boring. I would much rather have all the gnomes to have gone slowly insane from being seperated from the first world and have developed into bitter angry homocidal spriggans. NOW THAT would be an awesome race.


Problem is in most super dangerous campaigns with evil demons and stuff gnomes are just plain out of place. I say they get replaced with a race that is much more interesting like something as brutal as an orc.

And uh....yea that's about all orcs ever are. Generic warrior race #4334098640986409 with green skin. That you find Orcs interesting and gnomes boring speaks a lot :p


I just like the idea of replacing gnomes with a LN militaristic race or something. It would be so much more interesting.

That's actually about all Pathfinder has allowed them to be. They can be much much more.

I'd love to see them genuinely explanded upon and fleshed out. But I also wouldn't want to see them replacing gnomes or any other race.

I ditched Half-Orcs for Orcs in my setting, declared them unable to crossbreed with humans, and made them not always brutish and dumb since now they use Half-Orc stats and can have above-average intelligence more often than not (Their leaders tend to be Witches or Clerics). Made dwarves sailors and pirates, made kobolds the PC underground-dwellers and miners.

Gnomes I think are awesome. They were kind of forgettable back in 3.5 but the added fey flavor has made them so much more interesting in PF.

well nothing says a hobgoblin can't be lawful neutered, and they are militaristic. Too bad Dwarves eat them for breakfast with their half kegs of stout!


I know lets replace gnomes with fetchlings!!! Descended from humans trapped on the plane of shadow they get the bones to charisma like gnomes and therefore fill the gap. And are also dark and gritty. That sounds awesome to me!!!

The game is made for a wide variety of people with a wide variety of interests. If you don't like <insert race/class/skill/feat/etc here> then don't [redacted] use it in your [redacted] game and let everyone else have their fun, you [redacted].

You know, some of us don't want our game to be gritty all the time. Some times we want something comedic and whimsical in our games. Some times we want both in the same game, it sounds weird but some how it works. Now I would like to see more things about Gnomes in Golarion, but with all of the Aniti-Gnomitic hatred that people throw around it's no wonder that those of us who want want more Gnomes get nothing. If you don't like them so much just Ban them in your Game and be done. Let those of who do want more Gnome stuff have it.

There is literally nothing more gritty than a group of deep gnomes, see my last game, burrying pickaxes in the heads of their Drow slavers, and then killing all the Drow children. Gnomes are the fantasy underdog and I love rooting for them.

I hope there never is a 2.0, let's just keep editing and publishing for once instead of starting a whole new edition...that would be original and innovative since most of my other favorite rpgs decided to ruin themselves in editions 2,3-14 etc.

Pathfinder made gnomes cooler than any other system has.

The whole 'kinda fey' has to experience new things or bleach and die... it's a neat twist on an otherwise useless race.

Seriously... I always HATED the gnome race... and only played ONE before... who I DID have fun with..

Made him a SHORT forest gnome... and by short... I mean 18'' high...

BASICALLY a garden gnome priest... A LOT of fun.

In the old days they had no 'niche' Too much like Dwarves... or too much like elves... or too technological (which I hate in fantasy games) There wasn't much unique about them...

Pathfinder fixed that.

I agree with the people who say the halflings should go... I never liked them outside of the LOTR... and even there I though they were the weak links...

Hating them has become fashionable.


personally, i want to see more development on the planetouched and the orcs. but at the same time, i want to see the halflings, half orcs, and half elves go.

Y'know, Mikaze, I always find your take on gaming interesting and agree with a lot of your posts but goodly orcs is where we part ways.

I like shades of grey, I really do, but to avoid a big smushy blob I also like bits of black and white, and green, blue, red, yellow etc. etc.

When I look at the classic low-level monsters in Pathfinder I can see CG goblins (they shade into CN really easily, CG isn't that far away) and the tricksy underdog status of kobolds lends them to having a little good smattered about, because their evil ways are so understandable. Hobgoblins are products of an evil society so, again, I can see them being good sometimes and N more often.

But orcs are, in my games, like bugbears: they've got a primal streak of cruelty and selfishness which runs through them like letters through a stick of seaside rock. They exemplify the terrifying limits of brutality, they're Lord of the Flies, they're nature red in tooth and claw, they're the life of man being nasty, brutish and short!

Evil orcs make the shades of grey more meaningful with other races, and provide some absolutes to compare with. They also create a really complex response to half-orcs. It's a similar reason why I like always-evil drow, they represent the sinister, scheming, ruthless, untrustworthy side of real life. I think part of this comes from my lack of interest in demons and devils, they're all just a bit too silly. Drow and Orcs represents a corporeal, vile reality, and I think that is awesome.

I'm sure you disagree and I'm not seeking to persuade you, just hoping that you can appreciate why others might want evil orcs.

I'm also very worried about elves, dwarfs, humans, halforcs, halfelves, and halflings - because NOBODY likes them!

Gnomes are awesomesauce to deny it is to deny the awesomeness of Pathfinder.

And 2.0 is 6 or 7 years away at LEAST. So you are totally jumping the gun with an early trolling thread. Come back in 2016, after we have rules for Sharks with frikkin' lasers on their heads.
