Most memorable PC vs. PC kills

Just wanted to hear some good stories…

“IN CHARACTER”

We had been captured by a new race called “draylanders” which were 8ft tall LE Romans basically, and forced to fight in the arena complete with gladiator weapons and armor nobody was proficient in, and not permitted to use magic.

Though we had defeated the monster thing they put in there with us, the demanding Draylanders still wernt satisfied (apparently because none of us had died)…

Two of us were forced to fight each other, my character was a pit fighter and had some good unarmed skills, the Palli unfortunate for him did not, eventually I grappled him and put him in a head lock at 1 hp.

I had a “Feign Death” like ability, and the Palli was expecting me to let him escape and try and pull one over on the Draylanders… but I was CN and when the thumbs came down to kill the palli, I looked over at the other players who all had “I dunno?” kind of expressions on their faces… I considered the hundred or so archers drawn and pointing arrows at me, I looked over at the Palli player sitting across from me and he looked a bit concerned… and I told the DM- “well… I guess I snap his neck”

There was yelling, and anger, they just could not believe I actually did it, but eventually I explained… “Hey, I’m Chaotic Neutral and not killing him would have put me at a big risk, besides… they said they’d release us and let us keep our stuff… this way I get that sword of his that I’ve just been waiting for…” and all agreed I had played totally in-character…

Our fighter had picked up and put on an absolutely gorgeous magic helmet, of opposite alignment. When he became evil his newly darkened soul was detected by an intelligent evil sword, he retrieved the blade an attacked the party as soon as it made telepathic contact with him. I watched the events unfold, and was not caught on the surprise round without warning. We rolled initiative, he, I, the monk, he got 19, I got 12, monk got 18. Ftr killed cleric, one hit crit, monk attempted flurry, failed save against curse from sword and didn't act. I cast polymorph any object, fighter fails save, I eat cupcake, ftr dead. Turns out intelligent sword was an artifact, couldn't be destroyed (at least not with anything we tried).

Sovereign Court

It was in the Sword of Justice adventure in an old Dragon Magazine. The PC's had found 4 potions of different colors. A vial of acid, a vial of poison, a potion of healing and a vial of holy water.

After a rough fight against some rats one of the PC's was down, another dead from earlier finding out which vial contained the poison. The two remaining PC's (with admittedly a little GM nudging, assuming they wouldn't pick what they did) decided to try and get the third up by using one of the vials they had. Which of course was the acid...

The PC on the ground both took enough damage to die and failed the saving throw. I understood a lot more about DMing that day.

Sovereign Court

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It was during a 1e game back in college. It was a big party, mostly Neutral but with strong Chaotic and Evil leanings (the two clerics in the party of 8 were both Neutral Evil and charged for healing). I was the party thief and we were in the middle of a dungeon crawl.

I had just checked a door for traps and cracked it open to see what was inside ... and got pulled in by a pale clawed hand.

I looked at the party leader, a fighter who used two swords and was a walking Cuisinart, fully expecting that I would be quickly joined in the room by the rest of the party. Instead he shouts "Spike the door closed!"
My jaw dropped.

Two other players spiked the door, the rest of the group ran down the hall. I ended up sharing a room with a pair of wights and a spiked shut exit.

My PC got pulled in as a 7th level thief and managed to break open the door and escape (thanks to some freaking awesome rolls) as a 1st level thief. I ran in the direction of clanking armor and caught up with the party.

The thief was quite pissed (and I was more than a little irked) and said I should just cut down the fighter when the player running the TWF said "Go ahead, I'll give you the first shot."

I rolled a 20. The table erupted in laughter (save for the TWF's player ... who sat with a look of disbelief) as I reached for the dice to roll the result form the DM's custom crit charts. With one strike I managed to drop the fighter to 4 HP (if I had rolled 1 point higher he would have dropped). We then rolled initiative, he won and my thief became a pile of thief tartar.
