None of of that sounds promising and Dimitrio does his best to try and hide his mounting fear. He inspects his wounded arm again and brings it up his nose to smell the bitten area.

He stammers, "Let---let me see the person who is sick. I want to inspect his wound area and see how it's evolving."

"No, no elves, just these beasts, the dwarves, and Clegg Zincher's party down the trail. I was bitten on the first day, but I did not succumb to the disease."

One of the cyphermages rises, slightly and shakily, the other continues to groan in his sleep. He is covered in sweat, yet he shivers as if cold. His wound is red and oozes puss. He is clearly suffering from a disease of some sort. He'll gain the bonus from Kaylayne at his next save.

Samaritha holds a wand out to the party, "Our healer had this. It's a wand of lessor restoration, but none of us can use it." (23 charges)

Kaylayne gets up from tending the wounded.

"Ederin, is there anything we can do to thin out the numbers of the cats? Not even really sure why they are attacking here. If they wanted food, there is plenty outside for them to drag away. Why aren't they sated by now?" Kaylayne glances at Samaritha and mages, wondering if they have answers.

As the party heals and discusses their options, the Cyphermage at the tower’s peak (Derwyn) calls down below, ”Here they come again! And there are a lot of them!” He closes the roof door and bolts it.

You hear very little sound as the nearly silent creatures attack the tower. You watch as the akatas surge out of the surrounding forest. The alien monsters are unnaturally silent as they move, and shockingly fast and limber, their bodies moving with a strangely nauseating grace as they gallop into the ruins. Some of the creatures stop to paw at any bodies or pieces of gear left outside, but they do not linger.

Dimitrio is mesmerized watching the pack animals approach the tower.

He waits for confirmation that they are indeed safe but his rapier is in his hand.

Just in case, he can shoot out the window, he looks at his magical wand, puts it back, and asks, "Is there a spare crossbow or something that I shoot out the window?"

what does the tower look like from the outside? Windows? How big/small? Building is climbable?


Roll 20 Map

The tower, as I mentioned, is very smooth - as if made from a single block of stone. It could only be climbed with difficulty, though it is possible.

There are windows - really very small at the lower level, but somewhat larger at the upper levels. Even there, you don't think one of these creatures could get through - but maybe.

The door at the first floor and the hatch on the roof are the only 'full size' passages.

As the assault begins Ederin makes his way toward the roof of the tower, hoping to pick off a few of the beasts from above.


Roll 20 Map

Dimitrio is mesmerized. Kaylayne readies to rock. Ederin double moves up into the tower (difficult terrain going up the stairs, not so going down - I moved you on the map even though the stairs don’t quite line up). Lief watches out one of the smaller windows on the first floor. Garridan readies a charge.

The cyphermages, largely, panic. They all cast mage armor on themselves and prepare their weapons. They hold them unskillfully and shakily. "The upper windows might give way, but these doors are pretty solid. Still, we should stick together I think... just in case." Samantha says as she draws her blade.

The scratches as the Atakas climb the outer walls in force are eerily discomforting. The tower itself groans under the new weight and seems to lean even further to the south - at least to Ederin who is a little further up. Two of the creatures attempt to break the windows (DC 13) in the downstairs outbuilding…

Ederin rushes up the second set of stairs and looks down the side of the tower to see the Akata's climbing the side.
"Oh hell!" He shouts at the man standing with him. "Could these things be a bigger pain in the ass? This tower better hold."

Drawing his bow he looses an arrow at the nearest beast hoping to drop it from the side.
Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 121d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 +1 attack/dmg if point blank.

Shaken out of his stupor by the akatas' attack, the bard grips his rapier harder and starts reciting a heroic poem.

His booming voice talked about a clan of dwarves who held strong against the battering onslaught of giants.

Ederin, there is a ladder and a closed and barred door between you and the roof. So you can get there and open the door, but that's it this round.

That said, at their current rate of climb, they 'll be on the roof next round as well. You sure you want to be outside, hemmed in by a half dozen of these things?

Unsure how much more to prepare, Lief pulls out a new concoction. He turns it over briefly, pleased with its light transmittance. He downs it quickly enough, and waits for something to target. Cast Cat's Grace, because cats

Dimitrio begins to inspire the little group to greater things. Kaylayne prepares more stones for the battle. Ederin rushes to the top floor and… (did you open the door?) Lief manages to become more graceful. Garridan prepares to attack by the door.

The cyphermages move about a little and try to centralize for mutual protection. They look much like the dwarves did with fear on their faces, and weapons held poorly. Smaritha looks much more confident. She’s fought before with you, and knows what you can do.

The tower shudders, and seems to settle… a little.

Round 3 - Initiative 18

Dimitrio shudders along with the precarious tower but manages to stay on his feet. Hearing all the commotion outside, he yells out, "They're climbing! Are the windows at top secure? Ederin, you good up there?"

He then readies his rapier should any akata breach the tower's defenses and be within melee range. The bard continues reciting with a deep, booming voice.

Didn't open the door, my intent was to assist Derwyn in maybe shooting them from the roof but that plan has been clearly compromised.

Running back down to the ground floor Ederin curses not having gone to the roof when they first walked in. "Might've gotten a few before they made it this far!

He stays close to Derwyn, hoping they can watch each others backs if the hatch above breaks. As he continues down the steps he shouts to his friends below.
"They broke through the windows up here! Hope one o' you has a brilliant plan cause all I got is wood and steel!"

The cyphermages finish getting into position with the rest of the group on the ground floor as the glass breaks in the upper levels above them. They look decidedly uneasy and cower a little, but they hold their weapons firmly and are ready to fight if need be.

Though it's not clear from the map, tight as it is, Ederin can 5' step down the stairs a bit to funnel the Atakas one at at time at him.

Is Kaylayne on the stairs or down below? I think she's on the stairs, and if so she can see the cats over Ederin's shoulder as he is, after the 5' step, right next to her. -4 cover.

Someone could stand behind Kaylayne on the lower part of the steps and shoot through Kaylayne and Ederin, though it's improved cover in part due to the curving of the wall. -8 cover.

Ederin misses his target, but his overriding concern is protection so he’s doing well. Lief’s attack misses, but falls among the beasts. The splash burns on their skin, but does not blister, nor do they seem to pay any attention to the heat, as if restistant as Samaritha suggested. Indeed his attack does more damage to the floor than the Atakas. Garridan also connects, but the beast does not drop.

The bard easily keeps his footing as he looks for another opportunity to shave off some of those tentacles if an akata shows its face through the opening.

Does Kaylayne think she could squeeze out one of the windows? Same squeezing as akatas?

The lower tower windows are a DC 15 escape artist once opened or broken for you humanoids, higher for the Atakas (DC 17) as they are more massive which is why they went for the upper floors. The upper floors are DC 10 (12 for them).

Dimitrio readies an attack. Kaylayne throws a pair of stones and dramatically weakens the Ataka hitting twice. Ederin strikes out at it as well and connects, finishing it. Lief shoots through the door and crits an Ataka (purple) staggering it. Garridan stands back up and waits for a target.

The Cyphermages get very excited at having dropped one with their last spells, and stand ready to do more damage with their rapiers if they can (boy, low level wizards really can’t do much can they?).

The mighty Owen however strikes at his favored target yet again, before 5’ stepping back into the relative safety of the tower.

In the jumble, everyone is considered prone except Kaylayne who is stuck to the wall by her boots, so I’m going to just ignore the penalties as they offset (except for Kaylyane) - for the next round anyway. However, you can’t use a bow while prone Ederin. There are Atakas ‘on’ Ederin (red) and Kaylayne (brown) in the mess. There is no new map for this next section so be descriptive if you try to move. It’s a DC 15 to climb the wall with all the debris and the like. The ‘door’ is 15’ ‘up’.

The Atakas outside, scramble to climb to the door and one makes it there first (blue). It seems to lick it’s chops as it looks down on the party and wizards all piled together on the new floor.

One Ataka attacks Ederin while another Kaylayne in the upper section.
