Yes, yes yes, we could just give the druid spontaneous spellcasting like a sorcerer, but what I'm looking for is new fluff from which to design new class features.
We all know what the trademarks of a PF/D&D druid are: animals, animal empathy, shapeshifting, etc. But if we look into both history and legend, we can find other themes that are attributed to druid and other kinds of nataure priests.
I am on my second draft of such a class that is born of the druid but will hopefully be separate from it, like the sorcerer born of the wizard. While I have several ideas on paper I am excited about, I want more ideas to brainstorm from I am asking all of my fellow history buffs and book nerds for help. Outside of PF/D&D, what makes one a druid?
(if its any help, my working name for the class is cathbadi.)

Kobold Quarterly 21 actually has one of these, designed by Marc Radle.
Just keep in mind that every example of the same "class" split into prepared / spontaneous, the spontaneous version gets more features. Sorcerers get more stuff than wizards do, and oracles more than Clerics.
