I ready an attack to split an atom with a lot of force.

rules don't say I can't

I also ready a spell sunder against the next spell that's coming my way.

Oh yea.

I would allow this. It would end the campaign in a nuclear explosion that wipes out the entire party, but if that is what the players want, so be it.

I still like the idea of wielding a shortsword by sticking the handle in your butt.

Legal!

Not legal. Sunder is only against an item held or worn by your opponent or against an item for the purposes of breaking.

Now, if you have Spell Sunder as a Barbarian...

I think the rules about single handed, two handed, and offhand actually make this illegal if you read enough of it. Even additional arms specifically say if they are capable of wielding a weapon. I'm not sure.

We may have to look deeper into it (the rules... not... never mind).

Come on guys, if you're going to use the old and pointless "I can make anything seem ridiculous, which doesn't actually work as logic to prove anything" argument, I'm sure we can do better.

Actually... I take that back... I kinda' like the atom splitting one. The only one that is legal by the rules.

Grand Lodge

Sundering a subatomic particle is RAW.

I always wondered how the fireball spell really worked.

Nuclear explosions are the result of a critical mass of nuclear reactions. In the case of fission (not fusion) reactions, that means the nuclei are packed so closely together that each release of particles from one "split atom" tends to cause more atoms to split.

Splitting a single atom in the absence of a critical mass would not even release a measurable amount of energy without the most sensitive laboratory analytic devices. It certainly would not create a "nuclear explosion that wipes out the entire party."

In fact atoms are splitting all the time all around and within you. Especially carbon-14 atoms, but you'll have some random uranium, radium, thorium or other rare atoms floating around too. They split spontaneously. That's what makes them radioactive.

Best response! ^.^

See AD, I thought that too. That's why I addedthe qualifier at the end. :-P

Yes, I know how a fission explosion works, but being technical about it takes away all my snark-mojo.

However, while radioactive decay is technically "splitting" the atom, in most cases, that split is very lop-sided, often resulting in one side being a complete atom of the same element, and slightly lower mass number, and the other side being either a single subatomic particle, or a small group of subatomic particles. Under the influence of the nuclear weak force, one of the neutrons in the nucleus of the atom is converted to a proton. When this happens, the additional positive charge of the nucleus causes it to kick out a subatomic particle, or group of particles, or capture an electron, or spontaneously create and eject a positron. Certainly there are types of radioactive decay which result in two entirely new elements plus miscellaneous subatomic particles (alpha decay), but by-and-large, this is the much rarer (and more dangerous) type of radioactive decay.

In conclusion, I know about nuclear physics too.

My only problem with the total defense route is this.

a peasant in leather armor with a dex of 14 would have the exact same chance to "block" arrows with total defense as a fighter with the same leather armor and a 14 dex.

A peasant that is quite possibly the most dextrous (or at least among the most) in his small village that has burnt half a years wage on getting a good armor having a decent chance at stopping a single incoming arrow? Seems legit.
