Archetypes

Rules Questions

How many archetypes can one character have? The rules seem hazy about whether you are locked into a specific archetype. Can I pick and choose which class features to switch out and which I don't? Where do I record the archetype on my character sheet? Can I multiclass into the same class with a different archetype? Why am I asking so many questions?

You can have any number of archetypes, as long as none of them modify the same ability. If you take a rogue archetype that removes sneak attack, you can not take another archetype that removes or modifies sneak attack.

When you take an archetype, you must take all of it. You can't pick and choose from its abilities.

You can never multiclass into the same class. Archetypes don't change your class, just some of its abilities. A rogue with an archetype is still a rogue, and can not multiclass into rogue.

Grand Lodge

You choose the archetypes upon taking your first level in the class. You cannot multiclass between archetypes. If two archetypes replace or change the same class feature, you cannot take both. Once you pick an archetype, you get all the changes, you cannot pick and choose.

As for where to record it on the character sheet, do it wherever you want. I would probably put it with the characters class, after it in parenthesis.

Fighter (archetype)

Well, people seem to have already answered everything important. However, I would like to add that the traditional way of recording archetypes is next to the name of the character class, in parenthesis. So a Bard 1 with the Archaeologist archetype would be a Bard (Archaeologist) 1. It works fine, so long as you aren't piling on too many. A Ranger (Freebooter / Skirmisher) / Bard (Archaeologist) / Horizon Walker might need to abbreviate or find an alternate recording system.

One PC can have a bunch of archetypes, depending on a couple of things.

1) You can only take multiple archetypes for a class where the archetypes do not replace the same abilities. For example, there are very few Fighter archetypes which can be stacked.

2) You can take an archetype (or archetypes) for each class your PC has, so a multiclassed PC can have anywhere from zero to however-many-don't-replace-the-same-feature archetypes.

For most archetypes, no. I believe the Quigging Monk archetype offers some customizability, but I haven't realkly looked deeply into it.

Most of us just record it, as Jeraa and Mort mentioned, as Class (archetype 1/archetype 2) level. That is also how programs like HeroLabs will show it.

Nope. You cannot multiclass into the same class. If you consider Ki Pool, Barbarian Rage pool, Arcane Pool stuff, some of the reasons behind it should be fairly obvious. Just as a reminder, you also cannot multiclass between a class and an alternate version of the class, like rogue and ninja, or paladin and anti-paladin.

Inquiring minds want to know?

So your archetypes are set in stone at lvl 1 (per base class)? I just made an Inquisitor (exarch). assuming nothing conflicted with exarch, are you saying i cannot add an archetype when i ding inquisitor 2?

obviously if i mutliclass i can.

Can you cite a reference for that rule please? I cant seem to find anything preventing me from being a lvl 1 inquisitor (exarch) then a lvl 2 inquisitor (exarch/preacher)

I could obviously avoid this by picking exarch/preacher both at lvl 1, but for who knows what reasons, i might decide at lvl 9 i want to be a preacher too.

you can *technically* add archetypes to a class you already have but its super rare, because it almost always violates the rule of changing something you already have. I cant add preacher to exarch at say lvl 9, because i got solo tactics at lvl 3 and preacher tries to alter it.

But since preacher doesnt modify anything until lvl 3, i could technically add it at lvl 2!

Ill just add it at lvl 1 of course, but its nice to know why i cant add them later (or, when i can in rare exceptions)

thanks sniggevert!

Just a word of caution, the general rules say you are supposed to choose all archetypes for a class the first level you take a level in that class. However, you had asked in regards to PFS, and they have the more lenient houserule I mentioned to you. Since this is in the general rules forum, I want to make sure the difference is noted.

Thanks,
