Going to spoiler just in case this crosses the ick/TMI line for some people.

Apparently what's really affirming for me...:
...is being body-hairless. Nair'd almost all the hair off my chest and stomach a couple days ago and, minus some places a little tender after the fact, have absolutely zero complaints. My immediate reaction was a massive step up from looking at myself in the mirror for years prior. It's the first time in a looooong time that I've looked at myself and saw actual potential for looking good rather than a fat blob.

Today I got the straggling bits off my torso and did almost all of my legs, and that feels even better. Arms are next in a couple of days, then will need to get Scint to help with my back. Then after that it's just maintenance. At least, here's hoping.

Bravo for excellent self-affirming care.

One week to my telehealth meeting. <vibrates>

In other news, I've switched my pronouns and address in pretty much all my regularly-attended online spaces, and been met by a mixture of general nonhostile apathy (the expected result for most people I'm not particularly close with, really) and enthusiastic support.

Likewise my therapist was supportive when I informed him that I was pursuing this at our last session, and wants me to keep him informed as things go on. We have another session tomorrow but nothing's really happened yet to share.

The week after next I have a doctor's appointment so I'm just gonna wait until then to tell her, especially as I'll hopefully have the prescription recommendations from PP, and if she signs off on them that'll pretty much guarantee that insurance will cover HRT for me.

When I started, honestly the best support I wanted was the non-hostile apathy. I really didn't want a big fuss about it. I just wanted people to respect my journey and treat me the same way they always have.

Pretty much same.

It seems another Trans Day of Rememberance is upon us.

It saddens me as much as mystifies me that not everyone has made it to today simply because they are of trans experience.

I mourn for any who did not make it to today, and will spend every other day trying to help those who are still with us.

So I did confirm I'm going for my consultation with PP next week and, from generally all the reports Ive found doing preliminary research, it's not uncommon especially in an informed-consent state like mine to get your first HRT prescription or recommendation on day-of; even if I don't, I have an already-scheduled appointment with my GP at the beginning of December and (hopefully) would be able to get a prescription then.

I know "everyone's journey is different" but I'm just kinda generally looking for a "what to expect" kinda thing. Feel free to PM if it's not something you're comfortable with discussing openly here. Thanks and appreciation in advance. :)

I live in a very liberal state and I couldn't get my estrogen or spironolactone until I was evaluated by a therapist. That took a few sessions. I was able to get my HRT pretty quickly after that.

Good luck, Orthos! I 100% get the body hair thing, that's always been one of my biggest problems.

I used to feel bad or shallow about being so turned off by body hair. Then I realized I just didn't like thinking about body hair period, on anyone, because it was such a driver for my own dysphoria. XD

Anyways, haven't been here for a bit, but it's so nice seeing you making your way through this! Through some pretty rough times, it's some of the most hopeful news getting posted on this thread. In a way, transfems getting to live happily as transfems is our most basic form of activism.

And it begins!

Patches gotten. Can't do pills or injections currently as apparently with my pre-diabetes and high blood pressure there's some health concerns. Ditto on anti-androgens - apparently both they and one of my BP meds can spike your blood potassium, so need to get the okay from my GP before I can take both at the same time.

But it's a start nonetheless! Here goes nothing!

That's awesome! I have limiations also because of health concerns. I can say that once I got going on things, my dysphoria got better. It doesn't go away, but it does get better. I needed to also get more focused therapy to help. CBT and DBT are game changers when it comes to therapy. They take a lot of work, but they are worth it.

Apparently cross-playing female characters for years and DMing on the regular with a variety of NPCs has been good for setting the foundations for voice training. It's just a matter of adapting that into something used on the regular and naturally, rather than a deliberate affect being put on while playing.

Oh, that's lovely! I hope the patches aren't driving you too crazy. Mine itched terribly--so bad I lowkey wondered if I was allergic.

Woo! Doctor visit went well, she took the news of me transitioning well, approved me for spiro and recommended a closer-to-home endo in case I need in-person visits that I wouldn't need to drive three hours for.

Honestly no, no issues at all. I barely even notice they're there, to the point I find myself - especially if I wake up at night, or first thing in the morning - feeling around to make sure they're still on. They fade noticeably over the three/four days I wear them, so even if I didn't have a specific schedule to replace them it'd be pretty obvious about when they're used up.

Two weeks in and I'm honestly not really feeling any different, though my therapist says I'm seeming more lively since my initial determination and consultation. I'm looking forward to starting on spiro and seeing how that affects how I'm feeling.

The t-blocker's what actually really packs the punch, in my experience, but I'd expect it to take a couple months before things really feel that different!

Also, welcome, Maya! Great to have you here, by the way! <3

I'm definitely in that phase of "what's taking so looooooong", I'll hit my 1-month-on-E just before the new year and so far I really don't notice anything different other than just generally being in higher spirits, which I attribute more to "I got this whole thing off my shoulders at last" than anything medical or chemical.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

My theme for the year is going to be getting healthier.

I don't know yet what that's going to mean. I do need to exercise and alter my eating habits or even meditate to work on my mental health. I also have a lot of unrelated health issues and I'm going to see if I find ways to work on those to see if I can manage them better.

Themes give a lot more wiggle room than resolutions and allow for evolving needs.

Me two months ago: "Ok so it says here that HRT essentially puts you through a second puberty, so expect mood swings, emotional volatility, and physical changes."

Me today: "Of course it starts with acne." <o>

LMAO

For what it's worth, HRT generally clears up trans girls' skin over time, so this will hopefully pass.

Anyways, getting very very close to actually publishing my first PFI thing, so that's very exciting! My big resolution this year was to keep moving, and that means trying to work on the same thing a little every day or so.

Bluuuuuh. Insurance changed at the beginning of the year. Estradiol (and likely spiro too, when I refill it) is more expensive now. Dunno if it's "insurance won't cover" or "copay is higher".

Looks like it's the former. Now the wait to find out if it's "insurance WON'T cover" or "insurance hasn't been applied for some reason".

I can't pick up meds until the end of the week either way, so maybe things'll get straightened out between now and then? I'd rather not pay $50 for what I should be getting for $10.

"Good" news - I've been informed that once my PP consultant sends the insurance company a heads-up of "no, it's okay, I authorized this" they should be more cooperative. I sent her a message earlier today but it was after work hours so I imagine she won't see it until morning at earliest.

And yay, another appointment scheduled for the 22nd to straighten this out.

Here's hoping it's all taken care of and this is a minor hiccup.

You can also speak with the insurance and see if they prefer it in a different form.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Good news! While insurance wouldn't cover the patches, a local discount/coupon card provided by Walgreens cut the price by over half, so I was still able to get them for a reasonable price. Combined with whatever we do next week with PP, I'm good to go for another month if not more.

It'll also be a couple days after the inauguration, so we'll get to talk about whatever that ends up meaning.

I'm one step closer to bottom surgery! I need 80% of the hair permanently removed before I can be put on the long list. Today, I hit that 80%! I sent a message to my surgeon and now I wait.
