Determining Optimal Strategies

You can't un-pull a trigger.

How do you go about determining your strategies? (games, life, driving, ...)

Of all possible actions in any circumstance, perform those that are the most effective in manipulating the probable lifespan of the stelliferous era to the benefit of humanity.

Eventually, staving off the heat death of the universe will be all that matters. Prepare for it now!

How do you calculate which actions are most effective? Seems to me
you are just straight up guessing.

In the words of the ancients, one should make his decisions within the space of seven breaths. Lord Takanobu said, “If discrimination is long, it will spoil. ” Lord Naoshige said, “When matters are done leisurely, seven out of ten will turn out badly. A warrior is a person who does things quickly.” When your mind is going hither and thither, discrimination will never be brought to a conclusion. With an intense, fresh and undelaying spirit, one will make his judgments within the space of seven breaths. It is a matter of being determined and having the spirit to break right through to the other side.

You can always try prudential algebra!

Dear Sir,

In the affair of so much importance to you, wherein you ask my advice, I cannot, for want of sufficient premises, advise you what to determine, but if you please I will tell you how. When those difficult cases occur, they are difficult, chiefly because while we have them under consideration, all the reasons pro and con are not present to the mind at the same time; but sometimes one set present themselves, and at other times another, the first being out of sight. Hence the various purposes or inclinations that alternatively prevail, and the uncertainty that perplexes us. To get over this, my way is to divide half a sheet of paper by a line into two columns; writing over the one Pro, and over the other Con. Then, during three or four days consideration, I put down under the different heads short hints of the different motives, that at different times occur to me, for or against the measure. When I have thus got them all together in one view, I endeavor to estimate their respective weights; and where I find two, one on each side, that seem equal, I strike them both out. If I find a reason pro equal to some two reasons con, I strike out the three. If I judge some two reasons con, equal to three reasons pro, I strike out the five; and thus proceeding I find at length where the balance lies; and if, after a day or two of further consideration, nothing new that is of importance occurs on either side, I come to a determination accordingly. And, though the weight of the reasons cannot be taken with the precision of algebraic quantities, yet when each is thus considered, separately and comparatively, and the whole lies before me, I think I can judge better, and am less liable to make a rash step, and in fact I have found great advantage from this kind of equation, and what might be called moral or prudential algebra.

Wishing sincerely that you may determine for the best, I am ever, my dear friend, yours most affectionately.

That was the joke.

No strategy, I just act or react to situations as they arise.

Be polite.
Be efficient.

It's all about maximizing utilities.
Once you have evaluated your options and evaluated their relative utility it becomes easy to design strategies to optimize them.
The problem being that most things defy objective evaluation, so everyone's utilities are different. And they often change.

One of my faults could be stated as that I value the utility of having and keeping friends too high to be able to optimize my life for a career that would require me to move.

But what is the framework for determining optimality?
Does it have to be a number?
Can it be in dollar?
Or the number of sexual partners?

This is very confusing, and I blame you for making that way.

Most choices are easy to determine, we just do not like what is required of the right ones.

It's subjective. I mean, we're not naturally perfectly rational beings and we value things improperly. I think putting things in a number form, whether it's dollars or something more abstract, helps.

Like, if I want to play hookey from work, I'm out probably $100. So before I call in sick, I ask myself "would I pay 100 bucks to do whatever I'm going to do instead of work tonight? if I weren't working, would I cover someone else's shift for $100?"

.

The correct answer is "the lymbic system".
