First question: What system are you guys wanting to utilize? Obviously we know WFRP 2E and our own LITE rules modification going along with it.
I am perfectly happy to run it that way, or even just WFRP 2E normal. If you guys want to try a new ruleset, we can use PFRP as it stands, just be patient with me since I don't have them all memorized
Second question: What kind of game would you like? Exploration, horror, mystery, dungeon delve, political. I have ideas and resources for all of these. Just let me know.
Setting: As you already know, my desire is to begin a campaign starting off in the Empire of the Old World set in WFRP where the Emperor has charged you with finding out what happened to the God-King Sigmar. At some point you will be crossing over to Golarion and where you will arrive will depend on the answer to question 2 above.
Looking forward to getting this going, and I will try not to slack. :)
GM Drachenfels |
I'll be changing my Avatar once we get things worked out and underway. In the meantime, I have a couple thoughts:
If the story starts off in the Empire and moves into unknown lands beyond the Worlds Edge Mountains (ie: Golarion), then I suggest we use the 2E LITE rules we worked so hard on creating. They seemed like they were working well.
If the story is going to be something totally new and different, then I'd suggest the most basic (easy) form of the Pathfinder rules.
Honestly, at this point given all that's happened, I'd really enjoy playing in a totally new universe. I think it would be fun to experience a new realm with different Gods, politics and peoples. It would feel like a fun and fresh start. I'd also like to try some different rules mechanics as well.
I know that's a lot of work, God I know. Having been at the helm for most of our last PBP session, I understand the type of work and devotion that goes into it.
Ultimately, though, I'll go with whatever setting you decide will work best. I'm curious what ODV thinks and look forward to starting in the near future!
OneDrunkViking |
Well now, here are some thoughts here-uh. First, I'm not sure how I feel about trekking from the Empire INTO Golarion, I mean, if Sigmar Heldenhammer left the Empire and didn't conquer the dicks out of this new land I'd be damned surprised. Unless the idea that in the Empire his divineness is quite special whereas in this High Fantasy setting it isn't quite so unique. If that's the case then I would DEFINITELY like to see that addressed.
Like Drach, I think I'd rather just play in this new universe where it IS possible to win :P
A WHOLE NEW WOOOORLLLLDDDD
As for type of game I would like... Exploration/dungeon delve/maybe mystery if I'm feeling pretty. It can get political at times but I'm not sure just yet if I want to play that.
Who all is interested thus far just me and Drach? If so, give us a set up(you know the RPG version of a 'prompt') and lets get this s&@~ rolling. I don't want to play something completely out of the games element.
yeah.
Spirit of Pinvendor |
There is a core class that is a gunslinger in the Ultimate Combat book. Plus a couple good 3rd party stuff with gunpowder stuff.
Upset? Naw, just disappointed. Remember I originally wanted that very campaign story when I first suggested PbP. Lol. It's fine, no worries. It will take me a little time to get used to the rules. And we will most definitely be using modules and Adventure Paths until I can get a handle on the whole CR thing and learn how to scale the danger to your PCs rapid increases in awesomeness and magical items.
OneDrunkViking |
God yes this will be good! I've wanted to play those damn adventure paths forever!
I know you've wanted to play that set up, and I do like the idea but not with pathfinder I feel. I just think those two systems have too different a feel to them. I don't doubt PF can be dark, but WH is always dark and grim. It's hard for life to be so bleak when you have +5 Swords of F@*$ You BBEG.
I'm not sure how easy PF will be for PBP, I guess that's probably what everyone else plays on here but of we wanna do real simple stuff we could find another system.
But hey, I'm excited for everything.
Spirit of Pinvendor |
My plan was to remove most of the over powered "Magic" prevalent in 3.5/PFRPG settings. I had figured I would be cute and allow magic items/scrolls of magic/potions and other nonsense, but it would all be low-magic and unreliable, basically "steampunk" magic. It's there, it's advanced, but it might not work, it might kill you, and most people don't understand it. Only magic actually produced by wizards, fey, and such would be powerful, but would be more ritualistic and requiring planning ahead of time since the "winds of magic" would not yet be strong in the world. In fact I was thinking I would have Golarion magic actually have a different source and be separate from WFRP style magic which lead to some interesting consequences.
Yes, the setting wouldn't be as "dark" as the Old World - yet. But that would be due to the low level of Chaos. There are already things in the setting that lend themselves very, very well to the idea that some worship of the Chaos gods exist (Bloat mages comes to mind - Nurgle worship anyone?), but also that there are other malign divine entities that resemble Lovecraftian type Old Ones as well which I see as another type of corrupting influence as competitors of Chaos. Mutation is not completely unheard of too, and while not understood, it is not yet feared since the origin of it might be many things. The addition of outsiders from alternate planes makes the possibility of even more exciting supernatural conflict.
Basically, I imagine that the Old World is what Golarion would be like if Chaos "won" the world from all of the other divine entities. However, since Golarion is actually a planetoid prison of a major Chaotic Evil god called Rovagug, the powers in play would be colossal since all kinds of things focus their attention on this world in order to keep the prison safe/subvert the prison to their own ends/try to rip open the prison. As seems to be true in all high fantasy, the sheer number of supernatural beings and powerful monsters that supposedly exist, in my mind, make any setting as dark or darker than the Old World in regards to the dangers facing civilization. The one thing that sets WFRP apart is that, inherent to that setting, the bad guys have already "won"; they just haven't moved to claim their prize, so society gets to go on a little longer.
Lol, I have given it a lot of thought, my friend. I am pretty sure I could blend it well, but I understand your concern that the "feel" of the game settings might not jive. I have wanted to get you guys running around Golarion for a long time, so however we do that is perfectly fine, lol.

As far as simplistic systems go, there all kinds of 1E or 0E retro clones like Swords & Wizardry PDF or Paper version
That's just an example since I actually own a copy, but I believe ODV was interested in Barbarians of Lemuria for a ruleset. I have also heard good things about Savage Worlds ruleset being very simple to use.
*shrugs* It's all good. You guys let me know. In the meantime, I will try to wade through the PFRPG Core book and Gamemastery guide, lol.
OneDrunkViking |
OH NOW ITS ALL ON US HUH PINVENDOR! You are the GM, you tell us what to do!
I think BoL is a simple d6 system, but I don't know how well it would work with us in a PF universe (magic/magic items and their effects I dunno) so maybe if we're running PF adventure paths we should just play using the PF ruleset?
Simple is good, but in this scenario perhaps changing it would actually be the more difficult of choices.
Spirit of Pinvendor |
Lol, yeah cuz we see how well that worked for Drachenfels. Bog! Slaanesh!! Artillery!!! Daemons!!!! Fumble! = Black Pigeon apparently
I am fine with trying PFRPG rules. Just be patient with me.
And as far it being hard...I could convert anything to WFRP 2E, in my sleep even. It's mostly because I have a measure of exactly how powerful a monster/item/situation facing a PC is within those rules. So if a DnD module says "this should be a challenging encounter", I know what challenging is in WFRP 2E, so making up the stats is a snap.
*shrugs* Just comes with experience using the system. Once I get a handle on that with PFRP, I will be fine there too.

And when it comes to the ludicrous amount of magic items and stuff expect a lot of hand waving on my part. I just don't have the energy to do all the micro-managing that s+$& requires in 3.5/PFRPG. Most likely I will houserule a lot of it anyway because I think most of the limitations are stupid.
If you're going to give someone a badass axe let it be badass all the time not just badass "3 times a day". Why bother giving someone a badass weapon/ability/whatever if it isn't ALWAYS badass? If you don't trust your players, why are you playing with them? Power gamers are terrible roleplayers usually, so I choose substance thank you.

Yeah...don't count this guy out just yet. I'm getting all the PF books as we speak from the "Korean Wal-Mart." (I'm going to miss this place) Anyways. I'll be in, feeling a bit like hacking and slashing myself. My posting will probably be limited to about 1 post during the night for you guys. Hope that's not a problem it should change soon.

So after looking through the Pathfinder books I'm thinking about playing a half-orc drunken master. Haters, start hating. Any special rules on character creation or anything like that? Can we throw out the alignment system right now? I think we're good enough roleplayers to know what our characters would and wouldn't do. We don't need a cookie-cutter alignment system to do that!
OneDrunkViking |
Stavo, part of me hopes you didn't get real books from Korean Walmart hahaha.
Drach. Whatdya mean ya NEVER will! You big sissy! They are legitimately great great great. But we'll figure out something. Like I said I have the core rulebook in PDF and hardcover format so I can bring over the book and let ya go through it eh?
Edit: Also, how about GNOME drunk master hahaha
Stavo Warpblood |
I mean the PDF forms, there's a book out called the Advanced Players Handbook it has variations for all the starting classes plus lets you be classes like Interrogator or Summoner (which looks pretty friggin awesome). Korean Wal Mart is just a certain bay of pirates I get EVERYTHING from while I'm here.

Awesome, I am now the proud owner of the Pathfinder PDF. I'll be reading it over in my free time. Looking over the classes now, I'm thinking that Paladin jumps out at me. I played a Paladin extensively in World of Warcraft and enjoyed it. A female Paladin would be a lot of fun. I like playing female characters, but it's tough to do in a live action setting since I have such a deep voice and masculine nature, haha!
I have to say, though, I'm pretty excited to try something new after all this time. It sounds refreshing!
Also, Pinvendor, check your Paizo inbox!
OneDrunkViking |
Look at Drach! Always thinking about party cohesion! What a champ he is!
PSST PSST!
You can always roleplay a fallen paladin!
Maybe talk to Pinvendor about what powers you may be able to use and what ones yer not? Or just play a fighter/warrior who once was a paladin!
We'll have to see what the set up is for the campaign first. I can say my guy won't be lawful but he won't be chaotic. Vengeance is a different kind of beast...
Alignment is goofy anyways.
Spirit of Pinvendor |

The lawful restriction of paladins in this rule set is ridiculous. Not every deity is lawful, so it doesn't make sense. I see a paladin as a religious warrior who holds to a certain set of values based on his deity. I am willing to eliminate that requirement and customize the class a little.
Think Lucas. I always joke about him being a paladin, but obviously since he is pro-violence, he's technically not "properly" following the rules of Shallyah. But it makes more sense to imagine Shallyah approves of him since he does everything else very piously.
Once I review the alignment system a little more, i will see if it is possible to remove it without too much destruction to the gameplay. I know it is very integrated, so it will be tricky. I am thinking we might have to start off with a short module or two with the rules as is, so we can see exactly how to change things without completely revising the game into isomething not even PFRPG, lol.
Stavo Warpblood |
HAHA In that case Jurgen was a paladin too. He just sent people to Morr is all.... Seriously though, if I want to play a drunken master I have to be lawful because it's a monk variation. I just feel it's restrictive to my ideas of Jackie Chan laying the hurt on the bad guys. Can't I just be Neutral Good or something. And you can take out all the smiting Chaos/good/evil/lawful and such I'm pretty sure we can deal without that kind of stuff.... just me though. This has always been the thing about D&D that I've always disliked.
GM Drachenfels |
If changing the rules seems too problematic, I could go with Cody's idea and play a fallen paladin.
I could simply play a fighter class, but have him decked out in really old and faded paladin armor/gear. Clearly it hasn't been maintained properly or kept up. I've always been a fan of flawed, haunted heroes. I guess that's the Warhammer in my blood.
Still, if you're tweaking the rule set for alignment and lawful behavior, anythings possible. I'll see what your final ruling is and then go from there.
OneDrunkViking |

Stavo, think of this. In Legend of Drunk Master(and many other Jackie movies) Jackie just doesn't want any trouble. He IS a lawful character, almost always. He does what he does and bumps around trying to avoid a fight or any interference with the police. But sometimes...Oh man, sometimes... those bad guys can't let a good guy rest so he beats their faces in with ladders and what not.
If you were wanting to play Gorkie Khan, half orc Drunken Boxer, he's just going around trying to better attain enlightenment and helping those folks he should help. He doesn't attempt to thieve, or rob, or murder. It's not his style.
I also think in general you can have alot, ALOT of leeway with alignment so long as yer role-playing it correctly. Don't let that one thing determine how you behave. Am I in Real Life a law abiding citizen? Sure. Do I occasionally do something illegal...maybe more than I like to admit but I am not chaotic, we can surely agree about that.
Perhaps then Neutral is truly where I belong? I doubt it, for the most part I do like having laws so I don't end up gutted on the side of the road.
I hope this helped you guys in any way, I'm not entirely sure if it helped me haha.
Spirit of Pinvendor |
This is how it is going to be. Alignment is fairly integrated into the setting when determining certain things. I think I would like to keep it very loose but still have it around, and I will make rulings on a situation basis. I know there are certain effects which I think are pointless which I will customize to the circumstances. I really like the way Cody described it, and that's how we are going to look at things.
I am choosing to interpret classes that require Lawful have something which they choose to adhere to in order to "be" that class. Monks have vows, paladins have religious requirements, etc. To this end, a character may be "officially" viewed as having a Lawful alignment, but not necessarily in practice. As long as they are not willfully choosing to disregard their chosen path's teachings or requirements I don't see a problem with allowing some looser determination of what is or isn't Lawful. I personally don't see any problem with you guys setting your character's own rules and limitations for what would cause your god to smite you or your chi to fail you or whatever. We can establish that here before play, and since you made them up, there shouldn't be any reason we would have to fight about it later. Or it could even be a cool part of your story you intentionally choose (fallen paladin, heh). What you would lose access to will probably depend on the situation and will be determined by me and not what the rules say should happen. I have plans on how I would do this, and I think you guys would like it, so feel free to play your character as you think they would act regardless of their alignment or "metagaming" trying to "keep" your powers. Redemption or reinstatement will be possible and not necessarily as rough as described in the rules.
Now as to the particulars of certain things which will affect backstory and what type of classes you select to match. No one can start the game as a "fallen". Lol. You are level 1 PCs, so you have not yet had a chance to "fall from grace" in any way. I want you to feel free to make a backstory that suits your PC, but keep in mind since you're level 1 it represents you do NOT have worldly experience of the adventuring or practical application kind. Being able to start play as a character like a fallen paladin would be something for a game where you start as level 5 or 6 PCs since then it is a loss as you would not have access to paladin abilities you once "had". Alternatively, the same can be said of a badass veteran who quits the army to pursue the monkhood or join the church. You are not able to choose anything like that for level 1 PCs. If you want to be the army "veteran" that was the storage room clerk for 6 years who quits in order to actually see some action, that's perfect. Once we gain a little more experience with this system, starting off as higher level PCs with that type of background will be fine.
Spirit of Pinvendor |
There are several inexpensive 3rd party guides and alternate feat/archetype selections for each of the core and the expanded core classes. You are welcome to acquire and use them, but please allow me to preview the feat or ability, so I can understand it and modify it if it is overpowered or even underpowered.
If there are any classes from the AP, UM, or UC in which you are interested but don't personally own the books containing them, I can definitely get those pages to you.
Also, I would like to run a module built for the system and not try to convert the 3.5 stuff Paizo made prior to revising it for their own rules. Thus you have your choice of the following Adventure Paths for play:
- Council of Thieves
Once the seat of mighty Imperial Cheliax, the decaying metropolis of Westcrown now stands wrecked and ruined, haunted by mysterious shadow beasts and besieged by the agents of the nation's new diabolical rulers. Amid this chaos, a growing schism in the city's influential Council of Thieves threatens to tear Westcrown apart unless a new group of heroes rises from the ashes of empire to chart a new destiny for the lost souls of the city. - Kingmaker
The wild and dangerous Stolen Lands lie in the northern reaches of the River Kingdoms, realms ripe for the taking! Yet those who would become rulers of these new lands will soon learn that claiming a kingdom and keeping it are two different beasts. Can the heroes protect their lands from jealous and deadly enemies? - Serpent's Skull
A chance shipwreck in pirate-infested waters sets the heroes on a chase to discover a lost city in the jungles of the treacherous Mwangi Expanse! Factions like the Pathfinder Society and the Red Mantis assassin league are also on the hunt to discover the city's forgotten secrets, terrible revelations that could awaken a sleeping god and bring doom to the world of Golarion! - Carrion Crown
The Cult of the Whispering Way weaves a wide-ranging conspiracy throughout the horror-tinged lands of Ustalav aimed at freeing the Lich King Tar-Baphon, better known as the Whispering Tyrant, from his eternal prison in the dungeon of Gallowspire. Their debased rites and malicious schemes set werewolf against vampire, ghost against terror from beyond time and space in a thrilling campaign that touches upon themes of classic horror and dark swords and sorcery! - Jade Regent
When a decades-old secret is exposed, an unassuming local tavern-owner and a close friend of the PCs discovers her birthright is to rule one of the ancient Dragon Empires of Tian Xia—the empire of Minkai. Yet the current ruler of this empire, the mysterious and increasingly cruel Jade Regent, has no intention of giving up his hold over the throne. In order to save Minkai from a would-be tyrant, the PCs must not only escort their friend from Varisia to Tian Xia, braving the frozen horrors of the Crown of the World, but must aid her in gaining the trust and support of a nation on the edge of anarchy. - Skull & Shackles
There's adventure to be had on the high seas when a group of press-ganged strangers seizes a ship and becomes embroiled in the plots and politics of the Shackles—an infamous island chain dominated by pirate warlords. But as these new swashbucklers make names for themselves, rival scalawags, enemy navies, legendary sea monsters, and the infamous Hurricane King himself seek to see them walk the plank. Who will survive when there's glory to plunder?Note:Skull & Shackles is not released yet, but we could easily run a starter adventure first. With the slowness of PbP, I am sure I would have the first module by the time we were done.
Weigh in!!

That makes sense. I'll come up with something accordingly.
Next question. How far out are you from being ready to go? I know you have a lot to read and process. Are we talking days, weeks or a month?
I have the PDF for the game, but it's hard for me to sit down and read it. I think I need to have it printed out.

For this game, I absolutely need to know what you guys are playing, and what you are starting with before I can really get moving forward. The beauty of PbP is that I can mostly just look things up as they happen, but I definitely need to understand what classes you will be bringing to the table before we start. So to be specific, I need that info before I can give you a straight up timeframe. After that I will just need to know what AP sounds interesting to you guys and read it which would be a matter of a couple of days as long as life doesn't interfere.
I have the PDF for the game, but it's hard for me to sit down and read it. I think I need to have it printed out.
I feel you man. The thing is colossal, but I would say unless you are able to find a cheap hard copy somewhere, just print the explanation of character creation, glossary of terms and the section about combat. Maybe the explanation of equipment and magic items near the back as well for easy reference. For the most part, the list of skills, feats, and spells are something you could just copy and paste into a notepad for reference when you make your posts, and the rest is stuff I need to know, but you wouldn't need to have in paper form unless you're intent on absorbing everything.
Spirit of Pinvendor |
I want to provide fair warning in advance. Combat and some other things will require less "generalized" descriptions and will require placements. I am believing that I may need to use an imaging program like Paint or Photoshop to display maps and your characters in relation to the the enemies, etc. While I am at work, I am thinking I will use my phone's camera to take pictures of the tokens and physical maps and email them to myself so I can upload them at flickr or mediafire or something. Don't worry, I will try to make it as easy for you guys as possible, but some attacks and certain combat elements will require us to be a tad more specific. Maybe not for every round, but an update to make sure we're all envisioning the same thing will most likely be needed occasionally.
OneDrunkViking |
In regards to your last post there pinvendor, I think we only really need to be precise if we all play that way is that not so? I mean, I guess there's alot more strategy in PF fights but we won't necessarily need maps and tokens and what have you for EVERY single thing. Exploring towns for instance. But! Regardless! I have faaaaiiith!
For Adventure Paths: My votes go to Kingmaker (ohgodsobad,) Serpent's Skull, or Skull and Shackles As those three will all fit nicely with my imagined characters background.
Also for character creation are we doing rolls or point buy (because as we all well know I love randoms)
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 1, 3) = 15
4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 1, 2) = 14
4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 4, 2) = 13
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 1, 2) = 10
4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 3, 4) = 11
4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 1, 4) = 14
Rerolling one's
1d6 ⇒ 4
1d6 ⇒ 3
1d6 ⇒ 3
1d6 ⇒ 3
1d6 ⇒ 2
1d6 ⇒ 5
15, 14, 13, 10, 10, 14
Somehow, all my rolls ended up being the totals of the 4d6 rolls, AFTER reolling ones. Except 1. Weird.
I will be playing Ragnar the Lesser! A young warrior who originally hails from the Linnorm Kingdoms. Was off in distant lands being trained under an old comrade of his fathers. His father, Ragnar the Greater, and kin were all murdered in a Hall Burning! The most treacherous act a Northman could imagine. Ragnar has come back to the mainland to bring justice to his family's betrayer! He knows not who did it, but he will discover him and serve him his death. But first, he must acquire experience and perhaps a warband of worthy comrades to help him.
Or something.

Regrettably, this is something for which we must have more precise info therefore maps and tokens. Movement is strictly defined and how far abilities, spells, etc. reach rely on this. Flanking, Attacks of opportunity, the "5 ft step" used to disengage without creating an AoO will require this. Sorry to shatter your illusions...
Spirit of Pinvendor |
My illusions are not shattered! I'm just meaning to say as long as we're specific in our exchanges we won't need to map it up. But it would probably be easier to just have us gridded out then to rely on us each saying "I move 10 feet to my left so as to avoid the cone of death coming from Drach."
I appreciate your understanding. I am pretty sure I can keep this fairly simple. I have all of the maps for the APs in printable form, so I can make as many and alter them as much as I want. Plus I have tokens and figs and all kinds of crap that when I "shoot" using my HD camera, should be pretty clear what you're seeing.
