Clarification: Synthesist Ability Scores

Rules Questions

Sorry for yet another Synthesist thread, but I realized there were a couple things I wasn't sure about.

1: Can a Synthesist benefit from a magic item that increases a physical ability score when in their melded form? (i.e. Belt of Incredible Dexterity)

2: Can a Synthesist take the Increased Ability Score evolution for a mental ability score? And if so does that then raise the mental stat of the summoner himself when melded?

My feeling is that it is probably Yes and Yes but I am not 100% sure...

Thank you.

I'd actually say yes and no.

The magic item boosts the ability score (physical OR mental) of the combined creature because it is applied AFTER fusion.

The evolution applies to the eidolon BEFORE fusion and gets REPLACED when fusion takes place.

Hmmm...
But the Eidolon's mental scores are not replaced, it simply doesn't even have mental ability scores in the first place...
I would think that if anything you simply wouldn't be able to take it for a mental score, but again I am unsure.

Thank you for the response.
Anyone else have any more input?

I'm with slim. Anything that increases the physical attributes of the summoner or the mental attributes of the eidolon before the fusion does not apply to the fused attribute. Anything applied after the fusion counts.

the eidolons stats should have no affect on any permanent changes to your stats from inherent bonuses or to bs or whatever. the eidlons physical ability scores and that of the character are completely seperate.

you get the ability to go from 8 str to 20+ you can't have the best of both worlds.

So you shoudln't be able to get the bonus from the magic belt either, right?

How I had been ruling it was anything that was modifying your physical stats in your normal form would have no effect while merged. (then would start functioning again when you go back to your normal form)
But I became unsure when I was re-reading the part that says:
"While fused with his eidolon, the synthesist can use all of his own abilities and gear."

The thing about modifying the mental stat with Increased Ability evolution never came up before so I didn't have any point of reference...
If you can't do it it is a waste of evolution points then, so I guess Synthesists only use that evolution for physical stats.

So is the consensus a No to both questions?

You can put on the belt after you have fused with the eidolon which means that the eidolon is wearing the belt and it is modifying his stats.

So yes, you would benefit from the belt of incredible dexterity.
No, you would not get any benefit from the increased intelligence evolution.

A belt of str/dex/con would in fact boost the Eidolon's physical stats when worn. It's basically the same thing as casting Bull's strength on yourself while fused. Share spells moves the benefit to the Eidolon, but since you are using YOUR mental stats the headband int/wis/cha bonus stays on you. When your Eidolon goes away the belt then functions on YOUR physical stats as normal.
A belt of con would only affect your Eidolon's stat until it went away THEN it would affect yours.

The increased ability score wouldn't affect you until you get Aspect at 10th then you can use that evolution for that purpose.

Jaeru...

I agree completely with Jaeru. And I'm pretty sure the same sentiments are expressed in the faq.

Yes for the belt, or any item, but not for the evolution. I believe the evolution question is even in the FAQ, though could be wrong.

I didn't see that one covered, which is why I asked :)
But yeah, sounds like it makes sense, thanks everybody!

EDIT: Just re-read, and apparently I somehow skipped over that part (I guess I only read the beginning of the question, it was two questions in one entry)
So yeah: the mental scores thing IS covered in the FAQ, I am just blind.
