Father Charlatans Journal...

I have lost all sense of time so i will be dating this from the day i have been able to write... Day one...
It has been at least a year since I was imprisoned in this intolerable institution and finally I have been granted access to a parchment and quill... They say this is the luxury suite, and compared to the depths below I can almost agree... I hear the screams of the mad at night rising through the vents... One in particular continues to plead for his spell book, and begging the guards to know their names... He says he can unlock some sort of potential in them if he only knew their names...
Day two of being able to write..
The ones in the basement grow bold... I have heard them speak at night about an overthrow... And they do not speak of escape.. They want to control the prison and make it a hub... A symbol of their power... I do not know what I would do in such a plot... Perhaps they are religious, I would love to influence a group that was actually powerful enough to not only take this fortress but maintain its resurrection, coming from the place of oppression that it is today to an embassy of lunatics... Control to anarchy, such a pleasant dream...
Day three of being able to write...
There was an explosion in the dungeon just now.. I fear that the madmen are actually trying to execute their plan... The guards are all in a tizzy trying to find their hands, I would advise them to follow their thumbs from their a$&@+#*s but they seem in a foul mood...
The smell of smoke is starting to fill the air... There was another earth rocking event a moment ago... I don't know what it was but it seemed to rock the foundation..
The smoke is getting thicker... These mule mothered guards had better return soon, for I am starting to get a bit queasy...
I am fading... The smoke is taking my ability to think... I fear I will pay for my sins in this most horrible fashion... Ha, sins... The weakness that constrains the mortal man... I am more than they... I will return... I will not be defeated by this... Bring me your gods, and I will send them running!!!

•I noticed that there is no actual entries for the journal that is mentioned in the adventure path...So I wrote this up.. Use it if you'd like!!

Scarab Sages

This is great, thanks!

Thank you! I was reading through the AP and came across the entry for Father Charlatan. I read that someone can pick up his journal. Once the player picked up the journal and read it, I was just going to say "uhhhhhhhh ummmmmmm" for a while until the PCs told me to stop. :-)

I don't understand how father charlitan can magically hear in the basement when he's on the second floor.

I also wasn't aware of the AP saying that the fire was 3 days after father charlitan was incarcerated.

Thanks Dowevbo!

I really appreciate it when other GM's Share what they do for their games. I'm JUST about to the part where my players will find that journal, (maybe,) and so, this comes at a perfect time. I'm printing it out now and putting it in my book.

---

Victor, just use your imagination to come up with 'how' he can hear, I thought of 2 or three ways while typing this. and yes, you can all ways just blame it on wizards.

WIZARDS DID IT!

(I should make a T-shirt...)

As for the 'when what happened' stuff, the journal starts right out with the explanation:

"I have lost all sense of time..."

but, in truth, it looks like it says that the journal is dated from when he was allowed to write, not from when he was incarcerated.

Maybe it was a fix?

Either way, your comments come across as 'nit picky', for some free 'content' that a GM made for his game, and figured he'd offer it to others. He's not getting 'paid' to make it, so he's not held to any standards.

Honestly, if you had those concerns, why not put your efforts into making a version yourself that we could use for free too? I'd like that very much! options are sweet!

thanks,

I PDF-if-fied it for my game. There is one edit, where I took out the funny comment about finding their *$##$%$4's, for 'my' campaign and group, it didn't fit, but the rest does!

so, your welcome to DL and use this. It's also on the web, so if you use a VTT or PC at the table, you can just link to the file when you need it.

My first post's link doesn't seem to be working, and I see no way to edit or even delete it... I'll re-try this one. not sure why the other link wasn't hitting a page not found error, I swear it's there.

anyway;

I was a little sad that my party didn't make it to see the Father this last session. He seems to me like he's going to be the most interesting of the five.
I did copy the original journal and I modified it a bit.
Here is my version of Father Charlatan's journal:

Near the body you see a parchment. It has been rolled tightly, flattened, and stained from the years it has spent on the floor. Written in tiny letters, you find a day to day journal written by this cells final inmate. Due to the handwriting, age, and condition, most of the entries are illegible.

Day one:
Finally, I have been able to access a parchment and quill. I have lost all sense of time in this insufferable place. I am quite certain I have been here nearly a year since my imprisonment. There is no way to know. These slack-jawed guards refuse to answer any questions that I put forth.
They mockingly call my cell "the luxury suite". But, perhaps it is compared to the depths below. The screams of the mad can be heard even up here. One of the voices in particular constantly barks orders for the guards to return his spell book. There are heavy rumors that he is the reason that none of the guards are to be addressed by name in the lower levels.

Day ten:
These chains rub me raw. A barbaric treatment, at best. I know these gods and religions better than any "holy man". I laugh at the irony of these religious symbols they use to weigh me down. Some of these gods would punish their followers severely for applying such a punishment on someone in their name.

Day eleven:
The ones in the basement grow bold. There are whispers all over the prison. Those in the lower levels do not speak of escape. They seek to overthrow and take control. I do not know what I would do in such a plot. I doubt I would find it very difficult to influence a group that was powerful enough to not only take this fortress but maintain its resurrection. Control by the oppressors to control by the oppressed and, eventually, my control over them ... such a pleasant dream

Day thirteen:
Such a commotion! This may be it! The start of the insurrection.
There was an explosion in the dungeon just a few moments ago. The only thing that makes me nervous is that these dullards might slaughter me before I can pour my honeyed words in their ear. The guards are running all about, trying to gather arms and supplies. This is it!
The smell of smoke is starting to fill the air.

I did have it figured out how he was hearing it, I simply forgot to include it. Sorry bout that. The cell where Father Charlatan is held is above area u11 in the dungeon. I figured that since there is a huge furnace, there would be venting to allow the heat to be distributed through the prison. And with those areas being in parallel, it was a "telephone" effect. As for the when and why's, I was merely trying to give my players something. And usually something, is much better than nothing. Thank you guys for coming in and editing and making it your own, I never posted this thinking it would be the end all be all, just a stepping stone for other dm's that felt frustrated over the lack of information. Plus it added some flair, and I do love flair.

This is a good example of a way to present the information in a way that won't challenge your player's suspension of disbeleif. If you have to have come up with explaination to very apparent logical holes in a story, and those explainations aren't in the material provided to the PCs, then immersion is going to suffer.

Whispers around the prison solve the communication problem. Deliberatly making the timeline vague means you don't contradict with what might be published elsewhere in the module.

You can call it nit-picking if that floats your boat. I call it useful advice that will prevent a block between the players and them getting excited and involved in the story. If your story doesn't make sense, why as I player should I invest myself in it.
