whenever fighting for (or carpentering better) the survival/good of the caravan. imho
So when out hunting for food, or camouflaging the caravan or perhaps for setting up a fire so X wont be hungry/cold/threatened. Or maybe just climbing up to a mountain top to get a flower you know the npc would like... and for battling the yeti that guards it (lol)
Yeah i know, wide as a horizon interpretation. But better that way, than never seeing it utilized. Besides a +1 wont make or break the game.

It is worse than that. It is just straight worse than "Student Survivalist," which gives a +2 Survival bonus AND the +1 with Shalelu. James Jacobs gave a homebrew tone down of that one, though some argued it was really the other than needed to be brought up (given the level of the other traits this time).
So, basically, the whole trait was a small oversight. It was a fine regular trait going up against superior Campaign Traits. I'd recommend bumping the survival to +2 and give a +1 when defending Sandru or the caravan or something.
Although, if you are using the optional caravan rules, it might be fun to interface it with those. Maybe an extra +1 attack or AC when that person is doing the "Guard" job. AC would probably be best, since attack is so ridiculously easy to get up and AC is limited, which would make the trait feel more special.
